Summary: Five stars is NOT enough **********
Review: Beware of SFU bashers. The only way to form your own opinion, is to watch an episode. Don't let a reviewers attention-getting opinion disuade you from at least trying one episode. If you don't have HBO, have a friend that does tape it for you. If you don't like it, you haven't lost anything. If you do like it you will have an hour every week to get lost and involved in this excellent comedy/drama series.

Summary: Cutesy, content-free
Review: The Amazon staffer who compared it (on the DVD page) to a cross between Twin Peaks and Family was dead on. Because it's cutesy and content-free on the one hand, sentimental and melodramatic on the other. Most of the actors/actresses look like models and can't act, the supposedly "mysterious" Brenda is just another cliche, and the insistent soundtrack is a nausea-inducing combination of Rick Marvin Air Pudding and K-Tel hits. This mix might be "addictive" for some, but then again so is heroin.

Look, I'm someone who believes that TV CAN be great art. A cross between, say, Barney Miller and, The Outer Limits might be more to my liking. But this bucket of suds? Forget it.

Summary: Flawless series - too bad about no extras and bad packaging.
Review: Well, what can I say? I am addicted to Six Feet Under and won't think twice about getting this set. It's just a shame there are no extras and the cover uses older artwork that makes the show look far darker than it is. Why not use the far more appropriate "tree" image, like the soundtrack? Perhaps I should wait and see if Australia gets this set down the track sometime... someone may have the insight to change it.

Summary: Pricey...no extras, but an INCREDIBLE series!
Review: This is a watershed series in American television. HBO, which has created some of the best written and realisticly in-your-face programming in the history of television (the Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Oz) has re-written what is possible on the small screen with Six Feet Under.

The first season of the series deals with issues such as death, drug use, homosexuality, family alienation, mental illness, divorce, bankrupcy, co-dependency and incest. The amazing part is that it NEVER comes across like a soap opera or ABC Afterschool Special. It is very real, and moving.

Alan Ball, the extraordinary writer of the film "American Beauty" writes and directs this tour de force in television excellence. While this show is not for everyone, if you enjoyed Ball's previous work, you no doubt will love this show as much as the critics and millions of fans have. I think the Sopranos and Six Feet Under are reason enough to get HBO.

Ball creates multi-layered, complex characters for this ensemble cast, and allows them to develop throughout the season. What you see up front is not always what you get in the end.

For the price, I would have liked some extra features, like behind the scenes or a "making of" featurette, or interviews with the stars. Many of those are already available on HBO's website, I don't think it would have killed them to include a little extra for the {price}. However, that being said, you are paying {much} for 13 HOURS of entertainment. That is fairly in line with the 2 hour movie average price on DVD. And this is INFINITELY better than 99.999% of the movies that have come out in the last 10 years.

Buy it, enjoy it, and wait patiently for the next season...coming soon.

Summary: Truly unique television series
Review: Words cannot express how odd, enthralling, and life-affirming "Six Feet Under" is. One would think that a series about a family that owns a mortuary would be morbid, but there are unexpected laughs and a true appreciation for the gift of life that one takes away from watching this first season.

One caveat: I agree with other reviewers listed here that the price for the box set is prohibitively high. A 13-episode season shouldn't warrant [this price]even with the pre-order discount offered by Amazon, the box set is too expensive.

Summary: HBO's Best Show. Overpriced DVD!
Review: Arguably the best show on HBO's stellar lineup. Great ensemble cast, storylines and all.

However, the price for the 1st Season's 13 episodes on DVD is entirely out of line with any other series. I am seriously considering putting my pre-order purchase of this DVD on ice until the price is lowered by a couple of feet.

Fortunately I taped seasons 1 + 2 and can afford to wait, although I'd rather have a quality DVD with background material on the show.

It's too bad that the reviews of this show are going to be tarnished by the distraction of greedy producers trying to bleed the consumers / viewers dry.

Summary: Great But Too Expensive
Review: Excelent DVD but entirely too expensive for only one season.

Summary: Great series. Too much $$.
Review: It is unfortunate that HBO hasn't researched the market for the going rate of episodic television programs on DVD. While I love "Six Feet Under", and have anxiously been awaiting the DVD set, I will have to re-think whether or not I can afford to shell out [$$$] for 13 episodes.

Summary: 6 Feet Under, The Best Show on HBO, Not Tv
Review: When i first started to watch six feet under, i remember the first episode. It was so weird, the music was creepy and it dove right in to an area that a lot of us (hopefully) don't have to face for a long time. When it hits, you're shellshocked. Six Feet Under is a story of a family who lives in and owns a funeral home. All of the characters have their own intricasies. (the story is too long to delve into here and truly, i could not do it justice, so i'll save you the novel). It is truly the best show i have ever seen thru my television. Always stark, beautifully acted, this show gets under your skin believe me. It may be a little too frontal at first, but you get in to a groove with this. The writing is terrific, it never gets boring. You wouldn't belive the stuff that has happened in this show. The most incindiery part of this show is the first 10 min, where a story of a persons death is acted out. Get this even if you haven't seen an episode. It's a beautiful way to unknowingly slip through that door we all dread somewhere deep inside of us.
