Summary: Xena Is Off Da Chain!
Review: Everyone Xena Warrior Princess is a show worth watching, forget about the issues of subtext and "free your mind" to XWP. This collection of season one epidsodes contains the wonderful epiodes of Prometheus, Sins of the Past, and Hooves and Harlots. Xena brings the girls a worth-while role model and she shows that chicks can kick major ass!

Summary: The days of simple plot lines
Review: I love Xena so much and I can't wait to get my hands on the 2nd season. The bonus cd "A 60 mins. featurette about 'What you don't know about Xena' " is pretty uninteresting. I really wish they had interviews of O'Connor and Lawless instead. The only think annoying about the first season is that there are some episodes that are just "Gabrielle" episodes. Those I skipped. Who cares? The show is called "Xena" not "XENA and her best-friend Gabrielle." I'm sure that comment's gonna get me a lot of peeved ratings -- but whatever. I mean, I don't wanna see a whole episode w/o XENA! You know!? The show's called "Xena" for a reason. I was hoping the first season was a little more than Xena and Gabrielle are wandering in the forest and a problem presents itself and they fight and handle it. As much as I liked all that, the simple days of Xena, I am eager to see Season 2 where there are some more involved and developed episodes that go a little deeper. But that's all to come.

The price for this was way much but I definitely enjoyed it!

Summary: loved the series, hated the DVD encoding
Review: There's been a lot of stuff, both positive and negative, about the Anchor Bay package of Xena on DVD. I've been watching it on a very good quality all-regions player (which has no trouble with other NTSC progs) in the UK and it's frequently awful. The soundtrack (which should be glorious) is disastrously out of synch from time to time (The Titans, Prometheus for example) and picture quality varies from OK to really awful. Don't believe anyone who tells you it's because Series 1 was shot on 16mm film instead of 35mm: believe me, 16mm should look terrific on the small screen. And there's no excuse for the out-of-synch-sound or poor quality DVD encoding.

On the plus side you get loads more extras than the meagre Universal/Playback versions available on this side of the pond, but at least the Universal DVD's are watchable.

A great series and good package spoiled by very poor quality control.

Summary: About Time
Review: I miss seeing the episodes anymore, so this is the best way to get a Xena fix. I liked the 2nd season better than the first though, because of the commentation. But this set is a great way to have a copy of all the episodes in the season.

Summary: Love Xena! Hate the DVD Quality.
Review: I was very excited to finally get Xena on DVD. I was a late comer to the show and was anxious to see and own the series. However, the sound and picture quality of these DVDs are very disappointing. I have some experience with DVD compression and sound and I can say the makers of the set did a horrible job. It's worse in the "dark" scenes where pixelation is so prevalent, it's like looking at a grainy movie from the silent picture days. The VHS versions would have been better. I just hope that whatever company they hired to make the DVDs gets fired before the other seasons come out.

Summary: Why does this DVD look grainy?
Review: I noticed a lot of reviewers mentioning the graininess of the Xena Season 1 DVD. I just wanted to explain to viewers that the first season, as well as the second season, of Xena was filmed with 16 mm film instead of the more popular 35mm. That resulted in a grainier looking finished product. This allowed for handheld cameras that would allow you to move around easier and get into tighter shots. Not to mention, the creators wanted that old feeling from the grainy film. So don't worry, it's not your TV. lol

Summary: Great show, poor dvd quality
Review: Love Xena and will watch it anyway I can. But the DVD series is poor picture quality. I could be watching it on vhs for all it is worth. In one episode, the voice track doesnt match up with the actual "talking" of the characters. For the money, not worth it on DVD. For the series itself, worth it. I hope when the next season gets released, the supposed digital video is enhanced and the soundtrack is on target.

Review: Okay I picked up both sets so I will start with this one.
Picture and sound: THe complaints here are valid, even though the picture is pretty good is grainy and te audio is a mixed bag.
Packaging: Awesome book style that is used commmonly now.

Extras: More could and should have been done but a fair amount here.

Overall I am happy with the set so far and will write the complete review after I have watched all 6 discs, man this set has a lot of discs.

Summary: Can you hear my disappointment?
Review: I was thoroughly disappointed to find that these DVD's did not include closed captions nor subtitles. I have enjoyed watching the various Xena episodes over the years on TV where the CC's were broadcast. It's unfortunate that in the year 2003, when the technology is readily available, that so little regard is given the paying customer. I am one of the millions of hearing impaired persons that like to buy and view DVD's. I would certainly 'not' purchase any DVD in the future that did not contain either closed captions or subtitles. (At least foreign films, with non-English dialogue allow the viewer the opportunity of reading English subtitles.) If they want to sell more DVD's and be a 'responsible' company, then they need to do it 'right'.
