Summary: The Vampire Series for Adults
Review: For most, the premiere of "Angel" came as a surprise. Those used to the lighter, high school feel of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" were somewhat taken aback by the darker, brooding, and decidedly more serious "Angel."

While Joss Whedon's humor and clever dialogue are evident, the story lines move in themes of a far more adult nature. Depression, employment, corporate life, and hard choices are often the ideas driving the episodes. Set in Los Angeles, the show also has a less "fictional" feel than "Buffy." Grittier scenery, superb external photography, and great sets complete the effect.

One of the best things about "Angel" is being able to watch David Boreanaz and Charisma Carpenter come into their own as actors. The characters of Cordelia and Angel become strong, rich, and deeply humanized.

Great writing, inventive ideas, and a fantastic look. "Angel" offers all of them, and is well worth watching. The DVD set is first rate; the digital conversion is as good as I've seen (much better than the "Buffy" DVD's), the soundtrack remix is superb, and the features -- while few -- are well done and interesting.

Highly recommended.

Dear Mark,
I agree with your assetment. But -
If you are going to review the series, please get your facts straight. Faith is not a rogue WATCHER. She was a rogue SLAYER.

Summary: superb
Review: If you are a fan of Buffy, you will love Angel, It has the same level of technical sophistication, humor and great plot lines. I am beginning to believe that anything with Joss Whedon involved will be good. Note that great entertainment value is achieved without resort to the tired blandishments of nudity, profanity and typical hollywood "political correctness".

I hope that Season Two will be released soon.

Summary: City Of Angel's
Review: ANGEL, the television series spin-off to Buffy The Vampire Slayer, turned out better than I thought it would. Now, like its sister series, continues to make for fun t.v. viewing. At the end of Buffy's 3rd season, her vampire with a soul lover, left Sunnydale to atone for his actions. As the series begins, Angel (David Boreanaz) is living in Los Angeles. He tries to help those in need wherever they may be. In his travels, he meets Doyle ( the late Glenn Quinn), a human/demon hybrid, who has visions of people in distress. Doyle wants to help Angel rid himself of the guilt. Angel is also reunited with Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), who hopes to land an acting job, but instead ends up working with Angel, for his cause.

Created by Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt, the show's first year got better as it went along. The early episodes focused on a victim of the week that Angel had to rescue which can get kinda old after a bit. The mid season addition of former Buffy guest star, Alexis Denisof as Wesley, a former Watcher of the Slayer, was a smart decision. While the characters were always well-defined, this really opened things up a bit. Angel's nemesis of the series has been, even today, the lawyers of Wolfram and Hart. Led by Lindsey (Christian Kane) and Leila (Stephanie Romanov); A police detective is sure that our hero is hiding a secret and she (Elizabeth Rhom) is determined to find out what it is...Since you can't have a spin-off without crossovers, the first year saw its share of those too. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) came by in "I Will Remember You", while Oz (Seth Green) and vamp bad boy Spike (James Marsters) both appear "In The Dark" together, and renegade slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku) wants to reform in "Five By Five" and "Sanctuary" My favorite "crossover event of yeae one. The other crossovers worked for the most part, but not quite as well. However once Buffy switched to UPN for her 6th year, the networks have put a stop to those ever since At the end of the year, viewers would see a bit of the future, with the introduction of Charles Gunn (J. August Richards) who will get more screen time as the series goes on Like Buffy, this show has action, drama, and humor. You can't always predict where it will go, and that makes for good television. The show is a bit darker than Buffy and that's fun too

The first season on DVD presents all 22 episodes, spread over six discs. The extras include commentaries by Whedon and Greenwalt, as well as writer Jane Espenson, on a handfull of episodes. These are pretty good but the best one can be heard on the pilot episode. There's also an enjoyable season one overview and additional featurettes on Angel, Cordelia, and the season's demon encounters. Rounding out the extras are the scripts for the 2 parter with Faith and a standard looking still gallery/cast and crew stuff

Not a bad start for the Angel series on DVD. I just wish that someone fact checked Quinn's Bio and mentioned his untimely passing More commentaries would have also made for a better set. Recommended

Review: I love the show Buffy, and to be honest I just can't get into Angel. The acting is horrible and the script isn't great. There is no chemistry between any of the actors. Not worth the time to watch.

Review: Finally, us here in the States get what our fellow fans overseas had years ago : Angel on DVD ! The entire first season, as good as it gets.

Summary: If you like Angel or Buffy, you need this DVD!
Review: I am having a hard time writing this review. This DVD is so good I can't quite find the words to do it justice. The show is full of action, and humor. The writing is amazing. Very detailed and well developed characters. The premise for the show itself is pure genius. The first season really sets the ground rules for the show. It gives you the hows and the whys of Angel's life that you never got to see on Buffy. This is the complete first season, nothing is missing. I guarantee that if you watch just the first episode you will be hooked!

I would have to say that my favorite episodes of the first season are:

I Will Remember You - Angel kills a regenerating demon and his blood causes Angel to become human once again. So what does he do? Spends his day with Buffy of course. Wouldn't you if you could?

Eternity - We get to see Angel become Angelus again. "Remind me to get the name of your dealer before I kill you."

In The Dark - Spike shows up in LA and causes a few problems for our Champion. This episode is hysterical. Man, Spike is a great character! "Say no more, evil's still afoot, and I'm almost out of that nancy boy hair gel that I like so much."

Parting Gifts - Wesley shows up in LA working as a Rogue Demon Hunter. Heh heh. At least he would like to think so. Actually the Watchers Counsel canned him and wouldn't put up the cash for the airfare home.

"I'm a Rogue Demon Hunter now!"
"What's a Rogue Demon?"

Five by Five and Sanctuary - Faith comes to town and gets hired by Wolfram and Hart to kill Angel. Wackiness ensues. In Sanctuary there is also a guest appearance by SMG.

These earlier episodes remind me a lot of a super hero type premise. Kind of like Batman, only without the pantyhose and cod pieces. Just buy this DVD, you'll love it! I promise.

Summary: Kicking ... Angel
Review: The DVD set is awesome....as the show. The menus are kinda boring, but the episodes are still great. Also, the pictures on the actual DVD's themselves are not the same as advertised on ......None of the cast are on them. They are plain.

Summary: The beginning
Review: Unlike some people, I don't believe Angel ever got "awful." Obviously, the people who think so are casual watchers at best. Anyway, the first season was not necessarily the best but it set the stage for things to come. The death of a major character was also a masterful stroke to keep the show edgy. Since then the show has only gotten better, with the current season being the strongest, with some minor exceptions, so far. I hope that Angel continues on for a few more years yet, and maybe, if Buffy is indeed canceled at the end of this season, we will get another spinoff that is just as good. So keep watching one of the best shows on TV and, by the way, it's Cordy.
