Summary: Great Series, Great DVDs.
Review: I actually bought all 8 seperate 2 disc boxes rather than wait for 6 months until this 'mega-set' came out. Either way, you are getting the entire series of Space 1999, which hasnt aired on TV where I live for 20+ years. A great collection for fans. On an intresting note, A&E have a 17th 'bonus disc' which includes a 'series finale' that wasnt ever aired, only available on their website.

I definatly recommend getting this series from amazon.com and then checking out the 17th disc on A&E's site.

Summary: It's a winner !!!
Review: I bought this set because I remembered the original series as a kid. I'm amazed now what a great series it was. I can appreciate it alot more now. The first season is completely different from the second one, yet I found myself enjoying them both. Season one is more dark and slower paced while the second season is all action and fun. I reccommend this set for anyone who loves classic sci-fi shows, it's worth the money.

Summary: Which came first,Star trek or Space 1999?
Review: I guess I am going to upset a few "trekkies" with this review. But as a new Star Trek "Next Generation" fan I was a bit surprised to see a lot of similarities between the two.
There are several episodes in Space 1999 where they bring up the "Prime Directive." Also there is an episode "Alpha Child" where a child is born then matures immediately which is similar in a way to the episode where counselor Diana has her baby. The stun gun idea, the costumes..... it all seems like this is a great idea source for the later Next Generations series. I do agree however with the other reviewers about it being two dimentional and charcterless. But it is worth watching as a background to Star Trek's Next generation. (I will probably get blasted by Original Star Trek fans who will no doubt let me know that this series has borrowed its' ideas from the original Star Trek. I can't tell as I have not seen that series since I was a child)

Summary: A truly big and beautiful set!
Review: I love this show! Space 1999 the Mega Set is indeed MEGA!! You get both seasons and a bonus disc with a special final episode. I loved both seasons of Space 1999 for different reasons and wanted to add each episode to my DVD collection. This mega set is just perfect for me.

Summary: Classic Sci-Fi ... This one will bring back memories
Review: I only saw a few of these episodes when I was a kid. It's fun to watch the whole series from the beginning and in order. I was able to find a substantially lower price at another popular website, so I couldn't resist snapping-up this classic. It's funny how some of the stories have been re-used by other, more recent shows (i.e., same story, different sets/props/effects/actors). If you're familiar with the series, you'll enjoy this. If you're looking for a modern sci-fi series, you may want to keep looking. The video and sound quality are just fine. All the shows are here plus a bonus disk. Enjoy!

Summary: Mystery Science theater stuff
Review: I remember watching Space: 1999 as a kid and totally loving it, so I came to these DVDs with great anticipation.

Big mistake. :-)

I'm frankly astounded by the complete implausibility of the stories, not just scientifically -- as if sci-fi has ever really played by those rules -- but the stories are just so ludicrous, in ways I don't think Star Trek could match. The situations seem totally random and the characters are inconsistent at best. OK, so a number of Star Trek episodes were ludicrous too. But I kept watching these hoping against hope for some redeeming quality. Untimately, I found myself reduced to making fun of this crap a la Mystery Science theater. I'm amazed that TV ever got out of the dark ages.

Summary: Ah, yes . . .
Review: I was born on Halloween of 1969, making me a little too young to have really watched the chronicles of the Moonbase Alpha and understood them. They have probably been shown in syndication, somewhere, but I've missed them. As I got older, I recall back-to-back episodes of STAR TREK (preceeding the Merv Griffin show, unless I'm mistaken), and the requisite STAR WARS fanaticism of most boys my age. Naturally, I ate all of that stuff up, collecting all of the toys and books upon which I could probably retire if they were still in my possession. Yeah, yeah - I did the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA thing too (and recall enjoying it, though SF purists now tend to scoff at it).

But SPACE 1999 . . .

I know that I've seen it, for there is one thing that leaps to mind whenever it's mentioned: that shape-shifter chick. She was alien, I would surmise - and HOT. That's what I remember, and all that I remember. Just an attractive, sexy, dark-haired being who could turn into . . . other stuff. I can almost, just vaguely, see Barbara Bain - but the alien girl . . . she must have sprung some kind of tiny spring in my pre-adolescent being . . . and it sits there, still boinging in her memory.

This, and the faint recollection of being scared as I watched a show which was probably way above my head . . .

The reviews here are very good, intriguing. There were always articles on this series in the movie mags I got as a kid (Starlog, Fantastic Films, etc.), nestled in between the episode guides to STAR TREK and the I-wish predictions for REVENGE OF THE JEDI . . . I guess that I just never managed to catch it when I got older.

But, if I get the extra money, sometime - yep, I'm going to spring for the megaset . . .

I hope that chick is still hot . . .

Summary: great value-great set
Review: I was kinda wary about buying this set from some of the reviews I read here. Let me tell you it's worth the price, this set is fantastic. I used to love the show when I was younger, now I can really appreciate it. If you like Space 1999 or just like sci fi you will love this set.

Summary: More than what the description says!
Review: I've read most of these reviews and these people must have missed something. The set I bought (from a retailer other than "Amazon") also included a "Bonus Disc". This extra 17th disc includes 3 episodes with audio commentary, an alternate version of a scene from "Collision Course," and the "Message from Moonbase Alpha" fan produced episode. It also has several other features I can't think of off the top of my head (interviews and such).
With all 48 episodes in excellent quality and a nice set of features, it truly is what it claims to be--the "Mega Set"!
