Summary: Cheese on cheese, cheese on cheese, or cheese on cheese...
Review: This movie makes me get a little sweet at bedtime.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: an odd comedy and mockumentary
Review: This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition.

This is the first non movie released through the Criterion Collection. It is a short lived TV series, which is a satire of the saturday morning fishing shows which used to be popular.

Im this show, experimental musician John Lurie goes fishing with movie stars. There are 3 half hour episodes and one two-part hour long episode.

The special features are audio commentary by John Lurie and a music video of his band, the Lounge Lizards.

This show is one of the oddest comedies I have ever seen and completly out of the mainstream. Fishermen and comedians will both like this show.

Summary: God bless you John, wherever you are.
Review: This stuff is hilarious. It's a clever spin on the old fishing show. I laughed and snickered too. Everyone becomes a human being with a fishing pole in their hands. It's a great show and there should be more done. C'mon John, get on it and go fishing. Don't forget he kooky narrator from the seventies. Go on, get that pole and land a whale!

Summary: Cheese on cheese...cheese on cheese
Review: Those without a developed sense of humor will not enjoy this. Of course, in this age where sappy teen comedies and the same rehased Robin Williams movie makes millions that will be hard to find. The comedy is...how shall I put it?...beneath the surface. John Lurie, the host, is a strange bird. Tall and gangly, he looks like a fish out of water among Thai monks and Amazon fishermen. He brings with him several hollywood friends who, without a script or role, seem to be out of their element.

Though watching this dvd can give one a perverted voyeuristic feeling, it is a very pleasant one. Watching Dennis Hopper gloat over his ping pong win and Tom Waits stick a fish down his shorts is something most people never get to see and can be more fascinating than you'd think.

Not your average comedy, most people will criticize this and not understand it. That's to be expected when comedies are geared towards twelve year olds.

Summary: Keep Fishin'
Review: To those who find fishing shows a little on the stale side may find something to like about Fishing with John. Two guys, who are NOT professional fishermen, embark on a hopeless adventure. While some silly dialogue and hilarious commentary abound, along with added [elaborate] drama, Fishing with John isn't as fun-filled and sporadic as one might hope. However, it is a mild amusement that won't leave you screaming for more, but will give you a smile to think about. With that said, the show is more fun to talk about than it is to watch, but you have to see it first.

Summary: Amazing! John Lurie approaches Genius status!
Review: Wow - well, having all the episodes on one DVD is helpful as it gives you a chance to really study them. John Lurie's unique, subtle, sophisticated, and nearly indescribable brand of humour is present in each one. The convenience of DVD, combined with crisp sound and image quality and the completeness of this package are easily enough to justify this purchase alone. What really made it for me though, was having a separate audio track of Lurie's own commentary through each episode. I found myself watching an episode and then watching the same one again immediately following, this time while listening to Lurie. His commentary is often humerous, but at times often revealing of himself as an artist and person, not to mention the technical insights of the production of the show - its as if he's sitting in the room with you while you watch it. Ths disc closes with Lurie's fabulous "Big Heart" video with the Lounge Lizards which I hadn't seen since VH-1's old "New Visions" show in the late 80's.

John Lurie is surely one of the most gifted, and soulfull artists of the 80's and 90's. Thank you John, for sharing your humour and perspective with all of us...please do more episodes...

Summary: Valuable Information in the Fight Against Terror(ism)
Review: Written and performed in the 1990's, long before 9/11, this series of documentaries is way before its time - so far ahead many may not understand its direct connection to the Fight Against Terror(ism). In this uncertain age, we are all scared of Terror(ism), and as such, I urge you as a patriotic American to buy this DVD as one element in the fight against Terror(ism). Don't let Saddam get the better of us.
