Description:

What's billed as the world's "largest adrenaline sports festival," the first Summer Gravity Games, held in Providence, Rhode Island, is comprehensively chronicled on this DVD that boasts a running time of four hours. As originally shot by NBC Sports, intense attention is directed at some of the world's most talented competitors in "alternative sports." For example, contestants rocket up and down wooden ramps while performing ballet-like stunts on small bicycles, and intense dudes in leather bodysuits gleefully shoot down a hill in Providence in a breathtaking downhill skateboarding race.

Throughout the production, profiles of various competitors are presented, and at times the contestants themselves (such as Tony Hawk, who is introduced as a "living legend of skateboarding"), are the main attraction. But the production never strays far from the theme that these events are not stunts but legitimate, if admittedly offbeat, sports. The competitions in skateboard and bicycle events are followed closely from beginning to end. If the events seem mystifying at first to those used to traditional sports, they are presented in a highly entertaining and visually arresting package. For those who are already familiar with sports like "Vert Biking," Gravity Games: Summer One is a mother lode of gnarly action. --Robert J. McNamara
