Summary: A Look at the greastest distance runner of the times
Review: I had already seen Prefontaine, and I thought it was a good movie. When I heard that Without Limits was coming out, I was all excited about it. But, of course it never came to Pittsburgh, so I was forced to wait until it's video release. IT's a great movie, a more personal look into the life of Pre, Sutherland is great, and so is Crudup. IT really gets me pumped to get out and run.

Summary: Without Limits is one of the best running movies out there.
Review: Prefontaine is portrayed very well. The movie captures enough racing to be exciting and also develops a plot. Pre is one of the most important athletes of our time and is deserving of movies as good as this one. The actors and actresses do an extraordinary job of portraying a star in our sport. Without Limits is simply a great movie.

Summary: not bad, but not entirely accurate
Review: This movie differed slightly in its interpretation of Pre's life, at least in comparison to its predecessor, PRE. This movie is a little less accurate, and more Hollywood-ized. It has the elements of what Hollywood wants to see in a movie, with more sexual exploration. However, the race footage is actual, and there is a significant amount of it. Overall, a good movie

Summary: without limits was an good way to portray one's limitless.
Review: I thought Prefonatine was good but without limits is so much more mature. One of my favorite parts in the movie was when he was questioned about if he believed in God and he said "I believe in myself". By having that belief in himself he was able to go beyond any normal expectations.

Summary: Heart-pounding cinematography
Review: My family was one of the few lucky ones to see this at the theatre when it was in Minneapolis last fall.(Very few theatres had it). The race footage is unequaled. You feel like you're in the middle of the race and your heart will race accordingly. The movie should not be positioned as just for runners. It's thrilling and delivers thoughtful messages for everyone.

Summary: The greatest running legend of all time
Review: I have not seen this movie yet. But i have been waiting for a year for it to finally come out. I just finally found the first prefontaine. i searched for 2 years. If you are a serious runner you will love the guts of Steve Prefontaine. Someone who was never meant to be a runner. Small one leg shorter than the other. Thats Steve Prefontaine. Someone who no one ever thought could do it. He beat the odds and could have been the greatest runner ever. I believe that if the tragic car crash never happened that he would have been the best.

Summary: INSPIRATIONAL
Review: This is a great uplifting movie. It shows that with determination you can accomplish anything. Steve Prefontaine should be an inspiration not only to distance runners but to anyone facing adversity. Another movie about the life of Steve Prefontaine is "Prefontaine". Also a must read book is "Pre".

Summary: Gets me pumped before a big race
Review: The best movie I have ever seen, after I saw it I read the book. Good movie for everyone! It makes me want to reach goals as big as the ones he had.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Stupendous movie, uninspired DVD
Review: "Without Limits" does indeed go beyond a typical sports movie by being both an inspirational story and a character study. All of the acting is superb, especially Crudup and Sutherland. The scene in which Pre blatantly ignores Bowerman's mandate to sit back during most of the race and let the front runner wear himself out is especially good. It's funny, revealing of both characters, and just has that right level of inspiration (you can ignore the rules and win out of sheer guts) without being sappy.

I've seen "Prefontaine," the other movie about Pre's life, and I can't say that I was impressed. Some reviewers claim that it is more factual. Perhaps that is the case, but "Prefontaine" is not a well made movie. It also takes on extra baggage that distracts from the story. For example, in one scene they show Pre making snide comments about anti-war protesters. Was Pre a hawk? Did he ever express an opinion about war? I have no idea. But as a college athlete it would have been exceptionally hypocritical to have such an opinion when his status as an athlete allowed him to stay out of the military.

"Without LImits" doesn't get bogged down in these unimportant side issues. Instead, it focuses on Pre's fight against the AAU, the governing track and field organization which was so obviously taking advantage of athletes at the time.

Prefontaine once said, "Most people run a race to see who is fastest. I run a race to see who has the most guts." That about sums up the spirit of this movie.

While the movie is great, the DVD is nothing special. I can't figure out why movie studios make great movies like this and then slap them on a DVD with "extras" that include sub-titles at that's it. If there was ever a DVD that should have had extras this one was it - short documentaries on the real Prefontaine, how the movie was filmed, interviews with people who knew Pre, those who were fans at the time, archival footage. This could have been a stupendous DVD with lots of entertaining, educational and inspirational extras. Maybe they'll release an updated version - because this movie deserves it.

Summary: THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIES EVER
Review: I really enjoy this film and, admittedly, probably for a lot of reasons external to the film itself. I am a distance runner from Oregon. Thus, the legend of Pre is alive and kicking from where I am from. I read his biography as a high school runner and admired his dedication and commitment to a sport I was only just being introduced. Moreover, I have been to Eugene many times, run on "the track," and seen the spot of his untimely death. This film is an inspiring film; if you are a runner, you must see it. It will make you want to get up off the couch and go for an easy ten.

The acting in this film is better than in "Prefontaine," the other film documenting Pre's life produced a year before this film came out. Donald Sutherland's performance as Bill Bowerman is extremely moving and endearing. His connection with Pre is that of a father to a son. As far as historical accuracy, many will quibble about the details of Pre's life and relationships, but I am not overly concerned by this fact. As in literature, it is not the job of an author to necessarily render everything according to historical accuracy. Rather, he or she must create memorable characters that move and affect us. This film achieves just that.

While its interest will definitely appeal to those of the athletic (and, in particular, running) community, I believe that its message has a more universal appeal as well. Pre set out to conquer the world and ended up finally conquering himself and coming to peace with that fact. If you're looking for an uplifting, heartwarming story-you've come to the right place.
