Rating: Summary: breathtaking Review: When I first saw this movie, I cried at the end. It was so heart touching and romantic. I just wanted to look at it over and over again. Then when I had to take it back to the Blockbuster I wanted to purchase it. When I was searching for it, I only found it in DVD which I don't own a DVD. I then became really upset because it wasn't on VHS. Above all the movie was off the chain...
Rating: Summary: Why aren't more people talking about this film? Review: It's a love story and I don't like love stories, but this movie is more than just that. Basketball brought them together, tore them apart and brought them together again; however, there is so much more going on than basketball! When you rent this movie, I promise you that you'll watch it twice. If you don't, write me and let's talk about it. I wouldn't go out on a limb if it weren't true...
Rating: Summary: Love and Basketball Review: Excellent movie. It's wonderful how the Director was able to display what sometimes happens when to young athlets fall in love and both are very competative. Would highly recommend this movie.
Rating: Summary: Accurate portrayal of women in sports Review: Sadly, I didn't see this movie in the theaters. I wish I would have because I would have found this gem earlier than a month ago. I rented this movie because I kind of like basketball and it was something to do. I didn't really expect to fall in love with it. I am a female athlete in college and I could relate to Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and the struggles that she had to deal with to become an accomplished athlete. I understood the underlying double standard that is present in sports and the director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, does a masterful job of portraying it. I think both actors deserve some kind of award for their amazing talents. I feel lucky because the Blockbuster by my college apartment had 2 used copies of this movie for sale and I quickly snatched it up. I have watched it every day since.
Rating: Summary: Best film of 2000 - by light years Review: My god, why aren't more people talking about this film for Oscar nominations?? Easily the best film of 2000. Hard to believe the reports that Sanaa Lathan never played basketball before this film. She is 100% credible as a person who lives her life first as a 'ballplayer.' And Omar Epps looks like he can really play the game - no cutaway shots that I can see. That's really him on reverse layups and other nice moves. And that's the type of realness that makes this movie so special. The basketball *and* the relationship stories feel so incredibly life-like. There are peaks and dips in both in the film. The peaks feel glorious, the dips like a punch in the gut. If this film doesn't get an Oscar nomination of some sort, everything Spike Lee and others have been saying about the bias of the selection process is correct. [Note: I'm Caucasian.]
Rating: Summary: A Star Is Born: Sanaa Lathan Shines in Hoops Drama Review: "Love and Basketball" is a credible romantic drama with a twist: it's set in the basketball world - womens' basketball. Omar Epps does his usual excellent job playing an up and coming basketball star who lives next door to womens hoops star Sanaa Lathan. Court and spark ensues from the time the two meet as children to a satisfying ending, wonderfully directed by Gina Prince. The major draw of the film is Sanaa Lathan's awesome performance. She goes all the way inside her character and lets you feel her world in all its contradictions and ambivalence, and lets you see her grow. Lathan is incredibly gifted, and this is the film that will launch her. Get in on the ground floor and watch her shine.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Movie - a must see Review: I loved this movie. I had heard that is was wonderful but I never made it to the theatre. I am so glad that I rented it and I will likely purchase the DVD so that I can watch it whenever I want to watch a great love story. It was so nice to see a movie that featured Afican Americans in a light that didn't focus on the typical stereo-types that Hollywood presents. You follow these two true to life characters through their journey of love and the game that they adore. Not only does it focus on the relationship between Quincy and Monica, two very likable and wonderfully portrayed characters, but it focuses on Monica and her drive to succeed as a woman in a man's sport. I loved this movie and the extra features of the DVD. I hope that more people have an opportunity to see this film, especially young women.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT MOVIE! Review: This is one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps are excellent in this movie. What a Love Story. This is a movie about Love, Friendship and Encouragement. It was a beautiful story, all props to the writer. The most important part of the movie is that it proves that you can achieve something when you set your mind and heart to it. Monica(Lathan) did just that she got her man and her dream. I've watched this movie at least 25 times and still counting.
Rating: Summary: outstanding Review: I just wanted to say that this is a super film. And I was impressed that Spike Lee was the producer of the film. No, dont get me wrong I love and have numerous films(original) produce by four mules and an acre productions, it just that this film was truly great love film which he dont produce many of. I have seen this film numerous times with my family. We watch this film every night. Omar Epps, who I have enjoyed watching since, Juice was outstanding. I have always followed his career and was disappointed when ER took him off the show. And Omar if you are reading this message I want to say, now I know that it was a blessing from above that you was not on the show any longer God have bigger and better plans for you. I also want to add that Sanaa Lathan was outstanding. I truly love this movie where true love conquers all. And how you have just one powerful love in your life. I can see great things for her and I can't wait to see Disappearing Act. One more thing that I have to note I have talk to numerous people and they say that this is an outstanding movie. No I am not just talking about women many mens have seen this movie five or six times and love this movie. So tell me why this movie is not on the top ten list of movies. Gina keep up the good work...cant wait to see your next movie..
Rating: Summary: Black Classic Review: This story is one for the black movie hall of fame. Never have I been so moved by the love between two people. As an avid WNBA fan and the world's biggest romantic I will say, buy this movie watch it once a week to keep you motivated and grounded. Laugh, cry and cheer in Monica and Quincy's trials and triumphs, then dance all day to the soundtrack. Loved it, you will too.
