Herb Meyer--Reagan-era intelligence advisor, ubiquitous pundit, and former Republican candidate to Washington State's congressional delegation--makes an occasionally persuasive case for paranoia about America and Europe's future. Speaking plainly and slowly into the camera, using just a sprinkling of video visual aids, Meyer describes "Western civilization" as the result, centuries ago, of Judeo-Christian reconciliation with modernity. From this spring many good things--from the Renaissance to U.S.-style democracy--and most of the Islamic world, Meyer says, has not experienced an equivalent partnership of faith and practical progress. Thus the West is a target for backward Islamic radicals, and the logical solution is building bridges to Middle East moderates. (Meyer admits this might take generations.) Meanwhile, he says, the U.S. is under attack from internal dissidents (environmentalists, hippies, etc.) and--along with Europe--will collapse economically because of declining birth rates.
