Summary: WHAT IS THE MATRIX? AN AWESOME MOVIE!
Review: What if the world you live in is a dream, and you are never going to wake up??? That's the question posed by the Matrix, a film by The Wachowski Brothers. The film has a chilling plot, and lots of philosophy stuff. But, when our hero ( Keanu Reeves) gets into action, we are blown away with a slow- motion effect copied but never matched. The Matrix is the Ultimate adrenaline junkies film.

Summary: ACTION, ACTION, ACTION, (and a great storyline!)
Review: The best movie I've seen in the past 62 years! A special FX masterpiece!

Summary: Not only for the action
Review: This is a very, very well put together and interest grabber movie. I liked this movie not only for the action, but for the plot also. "What is real" and "Free you mind" are both mind-triping thoughts. Most defenitlly a movie to buy.

Summary: On & Off.
Review: Well, it had an interesting story, overblown special effects & all, but for some reason (& tons of people I've asked in college agree)that it gets more & more boring every time you watch it.

Summary: What is the Matrix?
Review: Quite simply one of the best films ever made.

First, there is the surface of the film. The story follows the classic hero's journey as described by the mythologist Joseph Campbell. Neo goes from his mundane every-day world, answers the call to adventure, meets his mentor and friends, receives his training, and eventually goes on to become a true hero. For those unfarmiliar with Campbell's work, this is a story parallelling Luke's journey in the original Star Wars.

As is typical for a mythological story, the characters are mostly archetypes. Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) is the would-be hero, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) is Neo's mentor, and Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) is the shadow/villain. The acting and character development are as sound as they are for any film of this type. And specifically, Smith's character/performance in this film is often put on par or close with that of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars.

Beyond that lays the visuals of this film. And what stunning visuals they are! Everything from what the characters wear to the scene transitions have a noticible level of meticulousness about them. The special effects are often touted, which they were revolutionary, and earned the Matrix the SFX Oscar. But beyond that, the Matrix just screams "style".

Accompanying that is the sound. Which rightfully received the Oscar for best sound effects editing and best sound. Both of which really help to bring you into the world of the Matrix, and have a unique style of their own.

Last of the surface elements are the sci-fi concepts. Which perhaps makes the Matrix unaccessible to some people. Among them includes robots, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, fusion, and the state of the future. To that all I can say is that this is a film, and not a book. And so it's not really an exploration of science-fiction. If you can just run with what the sci-fi that is given, I think you'll find this is an uncommonly good film.

Second and more importantly, are the deeper elements. The original Matrix is an exploration into the nature of reality. And perticularly in the third act when Neo re-enters the matrix, the film takes on the form of a buddhist parable... with each scene further unwrapping the onion. For those who can see the matrix for its symbolic level outside of the story, I believe this film can be as rewarding as a film can get.

Third and last is the DVD itself. The "Widescreen Review" sort of says it all. 5 out of 5 for picture quality and 5 out of 5 for sound quality. That alone should guarantee this DVD as an essential element in any collection. Add to that a commentary track and a feature exploring the special effects techniques... and you have one disc well worth it.

Summary: Great Action movie
Review: "No one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself." says Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), the earnest, elegant John the Baptist figure in the Wachowski brothers' allegorical science fiction masterpiece. Well, we'll give it a shot.

He's talking to Neo (Keanu Reeves), a blank-faced computer whizz who's about to go through the looking glass - out of the late 20th century world as he knows it, into the real, post-apocalyptic "desert of the real".

It's a reality where robots rule the planet and keep humans plugged into a virtual reality matrix, living in a dream world, while their energy fuels the machines.

Morpheus thinks Neo is The One, the messiah figure who will destroy the Matrix and resurrect humanity. Fellow freedom fighter Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) is convinced too. But Neo isn't certain, and will have to face the pernicious, powerful, Matrix meanie Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) to find out.

At first viewing, the action sequences stun, but there's more to this than the groundbreaking "bullet time" photography, or the adolescent allure of flash, black clothes and big, black guns.

Sure, "The Matrix" is almost untenably cool, but beneath the sheen there's substance. The story's a potent mix of buddhism, Greek mythology, and - predominantly - the Christian gospel.

The image of a superficial existence, where ignorant people thrive by blocking out a troublesome reality, is potent for a Western society drowning in wealth while the rest of the world suffers.

The performances, too, wow. Admittedly Reeves is gifted the perfect role - he has to look good while hitting things - but Moss is charismatic, clever and sexy, while Fishburne is monumental.

Nestling next to "The Terminator" and "Metropolis", this is one the finest sci-fi flicks ever made.

What is "The Matrix"? It's genius. And yes, we admit, you do have to see it for yourself.

Summary: A classic...one to be remebered for generations
Review: Without all of the sequels...subplots...etc this movie would be great. that is to say it could easily be a stand alone and the best movie that this decade has produced (last decade? watever) I was so enthused with this movie that i made my own web page about it. be amazed and go here : http://www.outwar.com/page.php?x=1719175

Summary: Technological Socialism
Review: Although the screenplay of this film was clearly meant for little boys who think they're Batman, the plot structure and issues the movie works through are important. Notions of dystopia, the Goth/Romantic vigilante, God and heaven (Zion)--these and many more pieces of human questioning and yearning are presented nicely and pursued with near perfect precision.

It's rare to find a philosophical movie entertaining, but there is such a great balance of special effects, sexiness, darkness, heroism, symbolism, etc. that the viewer understands at the same time that he or she is amazed.

The movie ends quite well. When society is in the middle of a revolution--in our case, a technological revolution--it's important for a piece of art about our times to be open-ended, to refresh our interest to let the revolution come.

Recommendations: Dark City, Donnie Darko, The Crow, The City of Lost Children, Cowboy Bebeop, 1984, The Handmaid's Tale, Fight Club
