Rating: Summary: Supergirl the Movie Review: I'm a big Superman fan and I, of course, watched this movie when it first came out. I recently have had the opportunity to watch it again. It is extremely cheesy, and some of the Special FX are suspect. The story also has many holes in it that are never filled. However, in spite of all of its faults, I would highly recommend aquiring this movie if you are a fan of the Christopher Reeve franchise of Superman. This movie is worth owning, if for no other reason, because it's filmed with the same look and feel of the Superman movies. And well it should since the Salkind's did this movie also. Helen Slater does a great job in the role of Supergirl. It isn't her fault that the story is so bad! There is a flying scene early in the movie that alone makes it worth owning. So don't buy this movie if you're looking for some great sci-fi classic! Buy it; enjoy it; poke fun of it. It will bring back fuzzy warm memories of the good ole days when Chris Reeve brought true dignity to the role of Superman.
Rating: Summary: Dunaway eats it up! Review: This is Dunaway in one of her best performances, really. People doubt her ability to do comedy, but this shows she can do it quite well. Faye Dunaway as the Evil Selena who "will settle for nothing less than world domination." It doesn't get any better than that! Sure, the plot and movie make little sense, but I don't think they were supposed to. Dunaway is funny as heck, I just love watching this movie. She looks good, too. I have a Selena trading card autographed by Miss Dunaway herself. It's one of my most prized possessions! It's fun, it doesn't make a lot of sense, it's really funny, and Dunaway is in a ton of scenes. What more do you want?
Rating: Summary: Perfect Fantasy/Fairy Tale Movie totally remarkable !! Review: I've first seen this movie on a betamax video and on tv when i was a kid.I love the scene when Supergirl landed on earth and practice flying. Im thinking of it on how it was made because its really amazed me like a real human being flies. I want to figure out the camera trick since i was a child and the International Version w/c contains a lot of extras/movie footage including the making who answered me just right now 2004. If you guys have run-out of stock of this Limited Edition... I suggest you to buy the Director's Cut Version ONLY w/c is more... or just both if you really like a limited edition which is also the same except for the packaging. If you want to know the difference, it's for you to find out !! I would like to thank Stephen of Kansas, USA
Rating: Summary: An Almost Perfect example of a Limited/Special Edition DVD ! Review: Supergirl the Limited Edition DVD has proven itself (to me anyway), that it is possible to have an almost perfect Limited/Special Edition DVD, despite a campy storyline. On this very special edition DVD created by Anchor Bay, there are 2 versions of Supergirl. The first vesion is a Digitally Mastered, THX quality of the International Version of the movie (Yes, the one not shown in US theatres). The second version is an unrealeased Director's Cut, which contains about 24 mins of never before seen footage of the movie. Both were spectacular (in terms of quality and sound) despite its weak storyline. Included in the DVDs are: a featurette on "The Making of" the movie, Trailers, TV spots, stills, poster galleries, star bios, and even an Audio commentary by the director, on the various scenes throughout the movie. Above all these goodies, there is even a 16 page full-color booklet on the various aspects of the movie (and a mini-poster)! Its too bad that the movie was a flop when it was shown in the theatres back in 1984 (due to the weak plot, no doubt). Helen Slater was simply meant to play Supergirl (she's a natural). Her portrayal of Supergirl's innocence and beauty could be seen in the ballet scene; and the night flight scene over the Chicago Skyline was simply awesome! Together with the music by Jerry Goldsmith, it was a match made in heaven (or Hollywood anyway). This DVD set, in my opinion, is much better produced (in terms of it's contents) than Superman : The Movie, Special Edition. More movie special editions should be made like this one. I hope the Indiana Jones, and Star Wars Trilogy (if and when it comes out in DVD) could be produced exactly like this one. This Limited Edition set is limited to 50,000 copies (every copy is numbered). I would most certainly recommend this movie to anyone, if they are interested in seeing how (in my opinion) a special editon DVD should be made, and also, how vibrantly restored the movie was - the color is awesome. I can completely agree with what was written on the bonus booklet, "If you haven't seen SUPERGIRL on DVD, you haven't seen SUPERGIRL at all"
Rating: Summary: I CAN'T BELIEVE I LOVED THIS DVD! Review: Okay, it's safe to guess that I've never been fond of the Supergirl movie, but I decided to check out the DVD because I heard it was packed with extras that Superman fans shouldn't miss. So, I caved in and bought it, and much to my surprise I was glued to my TV for hours. I hadn't even started watching the movie, I was still going through all of the features! There's the "Making of Supergirl" one hour documentary, which is really cool to see because they pretty much chronicle everything from day 1. Then there's a bunch of tv spots, trailers, domestic and foreign (these are fun, especially the German one). Then there is the story board art, talent bios and tons of color and black and white stills from the movie, including Helen Slater in her outfit. In addition to all of this, there's a neat 16 page color booklet which reprints promotional tie-ins like contests and games. I can't believe somebody actually managed to dig all of this up! The movie itself is a nice, crisp transfer with awesome digital sound and picture quality. There is also an audio commentary by the director and the special project consultant. This is really cool, folks. The consultant manages to get the somewhat wooden director to spill the beans on a lot of Supergirl tidbits like Reeve's proposed cameo and the reasons behind why and how they did so many of the special effects and set pieces. To its credit, I must admit that the Supergirl movie performs much better as a major motion picture after seeing the original director's cut and hearing the commentaries. Cutting out a half-hour of footage from any movie is bound to affect the solidity of the plot and characterization. With the Superman Special Edition DVD's getting all of the attention (and well deserved, I might add), Supergirl is bound to get lost. But hopefully, fans of this underrated movie and even Superman movie fans will give it a second chance on DVD. Anchor Bay Entertainment is responsible for producing this spectacular DVD... and they should be commended! They've taken this little known movie and given it the VIP treatment, proving once and for all that it's possible to make a great DVD out of a mediocre movie.
Rating: Summary: This is why DC Comics movies don;t work.... Review: Actually they do, but only if the film makers really work hard on them. The DC universe is full of characters who live in a very retro/comic book world with mostly fictional cities, high sounding newspaper and scientific companies like the Daily Planet or Star Labs. To create such worlds on film is very difficult and often they do not work somewhere between the comics page, the screenplay, and the final version of the movie. In the early 1980;s, The Salkinds still had the Superman movie rights and this included Supergirl, a movie that was really not much better then Superman III which was in production at the same time. The casting does not work, Helen Slater is unbeliveable as Supergirl. The sets and special effects look like they were done on a much lower budget. The flying sequences look unbeliveable as they were done using cheaper process screening on film. This director's cut looks like it was edited in a very cheap/fast way. It does not work. This movie will be no better wither a director's cut or the theater release because it wasn't a great movie to begin with. You can not make a bad soup better by simply adding more of the same not so great vegtables. Although the Salkinds long since lost the movie rights to Superman, DC Comics and Warner Brothers still have yet to make a great movie based on their main heroes. We are still waiting here.
Rating: Summary: A Guilty Pleasure! Review: I am a fan of comic book flicks, i have to say that this movie isn't bad as it's reputation said. It's based on the DC comic character, this 1984 fantasy is about Clark Kent's cousin "Kara" from another world called "Argo" which is a Krytonian city and a power source called a "Omegahedren" is lost and is now in the hands of a evil sorcereress, now it's up to Kara to become "Supergirl" and save the universe. A very fun but underrated flick that was butchered in American Theaters when it came out and was quite expensive for it's time, but it's a guilty pleasure for me and for those who like Helen Slater in a hot outfit, the casting is good like Peter Cooke, Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow, Marc Mcclure ( from Superman) and Peter O'Toole. The DVD set i own is Phenomenal on 2-discs with tons of extras, the set includes the international version with never-before-seen footage in America and the never-before-seen director's cut.
Rating: Summary: The Cheesiest Superhero Movie Ever Made! Review: "Supergirl" is produced by the same Salkind folks who made the four Superman movies. But they must have run out of budget for this one. The end product is a really cheesy take on the Maid of Might, Kara Zor-El, the original Supergirl. In fact, it's so cheesy that watching this DVD is pure nostalgic fun. I'm a child of the cheesy 1980s anyway! The flying effects here are not as good as those in the Superman movies but then who needs effects. Helen Slater as Supergirl/Linda Lee is the best special effect in this movie. Additional points should be given in that this movie is set in the Superman movie continuity - we get to meet Lucy Lane (Lois' sister) and Jimmy Olsen. A newsreader on a car radio informs us that Superman is off-planet at this time, thus explaning his rather glaring absence in this movie. The story centers on Kara's childish mistake in Argo City that supposedly doomed the city unless she can make amends by coming to earth to retrieve something called the Omegahedron (or something like that!). Unfortunately this Omega-thingy is now in the hands of two ugly aunties (Faye Dunaway is one of them) who lusts after this young man (can't even remember his name). This young man is also in love with Supergirl. Then the auntie (Faye) decides to bring about the end of the world. And yes, Peter O'Toole also appears (although I still can't see the purpose of his character in the film). In short, a really beautiful Supergirl fights two aunties over a young man and Peter O'Toole makes an appearance. That's it. Get it today and have a cheesy good time!

Rating: Summary: NOSTALGIC. Review: I'm an 80's kid..and seeing this movie again after 18 years relives memories of my Superman fantasies and the glorious silliness of the 80's era. I didn't realize that Helen Slater was simply remarkable in her portrayal of Supergirl..all of my relatives and friends here in the Philippines were glued to her. This DVD is a MUST. It contains all the trivias and special features about Supergirl that you'll ever need. It's all in one package.
