Summary: Wonderfully entertaining...
Review: To be honest, I hedge at telling friends I actually like this movie sometimes. However, I just cannot hide my fancy for this totally fun loving movie.
If you are a total fussbudget about special effects, you will not appreciate the creativity involved in the old school (non computer generated)type special effects in this movie.
It will never be an Oscar winner in any sense of the word. But it brings it's own sense of yesteryear serial that is just too much fun. It's actually silly in some instances. I truly think that sense of not taking itself so seriously is one of the most hypnotic wonders of this movie. It will actually draw you in and capture your imagination.
I would love to see a special edition that would have some interviews with Flash, Ming, Voltan, Baron, Dale and especially Princess Aura.
Long live Flash..!

Summary: WHY ISN'T THIS DVD AVAILABLE ???????????????????????????????
Review: This is a totally goofball fun movie. There is no high dramatic moment such as "Luke I am your father". It needs to be available on DVD and not for the arm and a leg that some of the people are charging for their OOP copies. Please release this on DVD again THX or a Super-Bit Digital transfer would be nice and some features on cast and crew, Where are they now? kind of stuff.

Summary: Gordon's Alive!
Review: One could argue that this movie is one of the more successful transfers from comic-book to big screen - possibly because the movie is a fairly close and accurate version of the earlier comic.

Max von Sydow at his scariest, Brian Blessed at his noisiest, Sam Jones as a flash Flash, soundtrack by Queen, great movie all round.

Summary: FLYING BLIND ON A ROCKET-CYCLE?!!
Review: Move over Luke Skywalker, the true hero of 80's sci-fi films is here!!! Thank God for sci-fi films, and thank God for "Flash Gordon!" One of the best, and most wildly entertaining sci-fi epics to ever be produced, "Flash Gordon" is a real treat. The film has everything that a moviegoer could ever want in one movie: lots of action(including a great battle scene involving the Hawkmen), humor, great settings & costumes, the single best movie soundtrack EVER ('Flash! Ah-a, savior of the universe!') and the wonderfully over-the-top Brian Blessed as "Vultan." I mean, honestly, is there any movie scene out there that compares to the thrills that you will receive when Vultan's legions of Hawkmen assualt War Rocket Ajax, and that kick-bum battle theme music from Queen kicks in? I think not!! Let's just thank our lucky stars that we have a movie that's the caliber of "Flash Gordon." This film is enjoyable on every level, and will surely become part of the sci-fi lover's home video library. I would honestly marry a woman in a heartbeat if she loved this film as much as I! Don't miss out!!!

P.S. Who knew that a New York Jets quarterback was capable of such amazing feats - honestly, could you picture Broadway Joe doing this? I think not!

Summary: An amazing feat of... the word camp comes to mind...
Review: I saw this in the movies and it was not what I was expecting. It made Adam West's portrayal of Batman look Shakesperian, frankly. I thought this was going to be a *straight* sci-fi movie and I wish it had been. I think this movie, altho it has alot of fans for what it is, just missed.

Max von Sydow makes a very good evil-doer despite the silly script and rediculous sets. Topol as the hapless scientist that sets the movie into motion looks ....embarrassed thru most of the movie. I'd be too. Sam J Jones looks vacuous. Melody Anderson seems strangly miscast, altho its very hard to tell and wears an odd polyester suit. Ornella Muti as Ming's daughter just sparkles and seems to rise above the rediculous movie. She was and is still a star in Italy. This was to be her break out United States movie. She should have picked another one.

The sets are over the top. The costumes are over the top. Most of the acting is painfully over the top.

I can see there is some appeal for this as a cult classic...and for that I can understand it. For someone who goes and expects to see a typical Sci-fi you will be dissapointed.

Summary: Flash My Man Gordon
Review: Hey all, This movie rocks Old Skool Sci-Fi!!! They really just don't make ____ Like this anymore!!! I also hear about a spoof version called Flesh Gordon. Never scene it but They really just don't make Old Skool Sci-Fi flicks into soft core anymore either!!!

Summary: You were expecting maybe Tennessee Williams???
Review: Music by Queen...an over-the-top performance from Max Von Sydow...a pre-James Bond Timothy Dalton...a space babe to die for (Ornella Muti)...the standard hunky (if talentless) leading man (Sam J.Jones) and his damsel in distress (Melody Anderson)...cheesy effects (even the serialized originals with Buster Crabbe looked a bit more "realistic")...

For fans of ulta-camp, one can't fly higher than "Flash Gordon".

You want a film of greater cinematic value, check out the local art house.

Summary: Flash Gordon, NY Jets!... Flash! Ah Ahhh! he's a miracle!
Review: They tried to make a movie that looked like and felt like a comic. To my mind they succeeded wildly. Using a first class cast and a campy, well written script the movie is a lot of fun to watch, especially if one liked the music of Queen.

There are lots of cool lines of dialog that are delivered with pinash.

Flash Gordon, NY Jets!
This Mings a Psycho!
Flash! AAAAHHHH, He'll save every one of us.
Flash! Ah Ahhh... he's a miracle!
Bring me the Boar Worms.
Gordon is Alive!
I like to play with things for a while... before annihilation.

Now, I'll admit this movie is not for everyone. My wife and daughters don't care for it. 2 of my 3 sons like it though, and of course, I love it.

You can even let the kids watch it. There is not nudity, no simulated sex and no foul language.

Summary: A comic book come to life
Review: Quite simply the finest translation of the look and feel of a classic comic book/strip into film. While we expect outrageous costumes, questionably obvious plots and characters inhumanly polarized along the lines of good and evil from a comic book, most film directors wouldn't have the guts to make such a literal translation as this.

This film delivers the look and feel of a comic book, and if we are even a little bit willing to allow ourselves to be taken on the journey, we soon find ourselves reading under a blanket with a flashlight at age 10 again, fantasizing about being the hero and about having the gorgeous heroine all to ourselves, even if we weren't exactly sure what we'd do with her, and even if she would still have cooties around our friends.

If you are willing to be taken on this journey back to your childhood, you'll love this film.

Summary: Corny, but still great fun
Review: What's a self respecting quarterback going to do when he is hijacked from an otherwise normal vacation by a crazy scientist that claims the moon is going to hit earth? That's simple you don't believe him that is until you met Ming the Merciless for yourself and he tries to kill you. Now what are going to do?

My impression-Good music(courtesy of Queen) pretty good special effects that remain true to the sprit of the movies of the 30's. In this I mean that they are a fun kind of cheesy in much the same way that the original star trek was a fu kind of cheesy. Plus there is that great way the Voltan charecter has of saying "DIVE"!
