Summary: A Sci-Fi Masterpiece!
Review: I first saw this movie as a child. I enjoyed it, but obviously couldn't fully grasp the complex social overtones. After seeing it a few more times as I matured, I began to realize how sophisticated the concepts in this film really are. The makeup, sound, and cinematography are top notch (especially for 1968!). The story is riveting, and the ending is legendary. Even if your'e not a fan of science fiction, this one is still well worth seeing. If you are, and you haven't seen this one in a while, treat yourself. I'll conclude by saying "I've never met an ape I didn't like".

Summary: SEE THIS MOVIE!
Review: After four sequels, a T.V. series, a Saturday morning cartoon, Halloween costumes, action figures, etc., it's easy to see why those who have not yet seen PLANET OF THE APES have little desire to do so. It's tempting, though wrong, to simply view PLANET OF THE APES as just another stone in the APE avalanche. But what those who have not yet seen it don't realize is that the reason why PLANET OF THE APES gave rise to so many sequels, etc., is because it was absolutely fantastic! The original, standing alone, is quite rightly considered a classic. To those who do not like science fiction movies, I'll just say that PLANET OF THE APES is a great movie--it just so happens to be a science fiction movie, so don't let that stop you. It is so much deeper philosophically, spiritually, etc., than the run-of-the-mill SF movie. It is one of the very few movies that I've seen that is profoundly thought-provoking and yet magnificently entertaining. The apes have created their own philosophy, religion, law, government, and scientific truths. The tables are turned on mankind when Taylor (Charlton Heston), an astronaut stranded on this strange planet, finds himself hunted, captured, analyzed, prosecuted, and persecuted. If you are avoiding PLANET OF THE APES because you think it is just a silly movie about talking apes, then you're denying yourself of the experience that only a truly great movie can offer. I've seen it countless times and will undoubtedly see it countless more.

Summary: what else could a film fan want
Review: this film really packs a punch that today's action films lack. as usual, heston is absolutely perfect and the way this film rolls along is terrific. of course, the shock ending is very memorable-don't let all the awful sequels affect your opinion of this film

Summary: It's a must-see.
Review: You will be impressed, I guarantee you that. The sets andscenery are incredible for the time, and still look great now. Thestory and characters are wonderful. The only thing I'll say is this is not 'G'-rated material. There is some brief nudity, mild language, and a little blood.

Summary: Thrilling video
Review: This is one heck of a movie. I've read the book and even though the movie is barely based on the book, both are great the way they are. Planet of the Apes is just one of those classics that you never get tired of, like Back to the Future or Wizard of Oz. Although I have to admit, the sequals keep turning worse and worse as they further go along, Planet of the Apes is just so very great, (I know, great use of adjectives, huh?). You just have to see it and there is nothing more to it.

Summary: An underrated classic
Review: This is one of those movies, like Jaws, that has spawned so many sequels and parodies that it is easy to dismiss the original. After watching this movie recently in widescreen format, I am convinced of the power this movie holds. It is above all intelligent, even with what seems like a familiar premise. Time travel, space travel, nuclear war are well trodden themes in most SF books and movies, but this one is able to make them all work simultaneously in a unique way. At the center is Heston who is terrific as Taylor, a man who is caught between what he knows from the past and what he is experiencing in the future. Not to be overlooked is the great acting behind the makeup of Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter. They are able to convey great emotion behind the latex. The script is smart. The dialogue seems to breed more and more argument, intelligently. That is the sign of a good script working hand in hand with a good story. It breeds excellence. It doesnt happen often, especially in SF, but this movie is without question one of the very best SF films ever made.

Summary: EXPERT SCI-FI
Review: Along with 2001, PLANET OF THE APES entered our sci-fi consciousness with monstrous intensity. A spectacularly original screenplay, based on Pierre Boulle's brilliant book, is fleshed out with pitch-perfect intensity, and snaps you to attention. Charlton Heston, holding on to his noble qualities of old, is placed in circumstances that astound and surprise you; the underlying political messages here actually have real resonance in today's divided world with perhaps even more forcefulness than they did then. The musical score captures the essence of a terrifying new place with wit and originality; and the often-copied finale, should you be a virgin viewer, will rock your world. This is a masterpiece of true science fiction.

Summary: A Classic Sci-fi...Heston is Brilliant!
Review: Heston does it once again...although he begins the movie with his 2 comrades, he is left alone as the only intelligent human after their deaths. His never ending will to live is his real drive in this movie, plus the idea of having Nova as his main squeeze isn't too shabby. I think the first highlight in the movie is when the viewer is treated to the first glimpse of the Ape on horseback along with the eerie music. Very well done indeed. The entire movie is solid all around and I wish current writers/producers would have the guts to put out something other than the current cookie-cutter films I dread seeing at the box office. The highlight of the movie is the end when Taylor realizes he has been on Earth all along. Truly an amazing scene seeing the statue of liberty buried deep in the sand along the shore of the barren wasteland. As Heston pounds the sand in the surf, cursing his former peers for their short sightedness and destructive nature, Nova timidly looks at the statue, wondering what the big deal is. The movie fades out with the cyclical sound of the waves breaking on the beach. Just beautiful! 5 Stars!!!
