Review: Sphere *1\2 out of **** Sphere is one of the worst thrillers I have seen in a long time. It is a stupid, poorly acted, and badly written film, based on a Michael Crichton novel. Why one earth would such actors as Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson want to do this film. I'd like to know what they were thinking when they read the script, because the material is so downright ridiculous, they had to be real desperate, which I doubt that they were. The story centers around an alien ship that is found 1,000 feet beneath the Pacific Ocean. Dustin Hoffman plays a psychologist that once wrote a government report on what would happen if we ever met aliens, adding some information in that he would not have added had he thought that we would ever meet aliens. In it he suggests the team of a Psychologist, a Bio Chemist (Sharon Stone), a Mathematician (Samuel L. Jackson, playing a role similar to Jeff Goldblum's in Jurrasic Park), and an Astrophysicist (Liev Schriber). So Hoffman is taken out to the site, believing that he is going to see a plane crash. Since the mission is top secret, he could not be told until he arrived what he would really be doing. There, he is briefed on what will happen, along with Stone, Jackson, and Schreiber. Then they begin their descent, along with the Head of the Mission (Peter Coyote) to their habitat, which they will live in while exploring the alien spaceship. They explore the ship, and they see a huge sphere, that only reflects what it chooses. This leads them to believe that it's alive, but they don't try to enter, since there are no doors. But, later that night Jackson sneaks out, and he figures a way to enter, and he completely changes, and the whole team becomes suspicious of him. We see Hoffman enter the Sphere, but he can't remember that he did. Eventually Stone will also enter. (Read no further if you want to see the movie.) Then a bunch of bad things happen. Queen Latifah's character is eaten by jellyfish. Watersnakes repeatedly attack Hoffman, and the ship is attacked by a being who talks through the computer, and calls itself Jerry. Eventually we learn that the Sphere has the power to take whatever you imagine, and turn it into reality. For example, Hoffman has a childhood fear of jellyfish, so it is complete human nature that he should be imagining being attacked by jellyfish, and that's where the jellyfish come from. (Read Again) This story starts out interesting, but poorly acted, and with some unoriginal dialogue, but it fades into a completely ridiculous, poorly acted, and badly written sci fi film, after the first four characters die. This movie is a complete waste of Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson, and Director Barry Levinson. This is probably destined to be one of the year's ten worst films. Review: When I went to see this in the movie theatres my friend Greg said it was awsome so I belived his and wasted my 7.50$ to see this crap. I can't honestly tell you how much I hate this movie the only thing I can tell you is that I would not watch this movie again for a million dollers. The movie just drones on and on. Plus there is no point to the movie here let me sum it up for you. The go down in ocean and fool around with a giant beach ball for 1 hour and 30 minutes. So the only thing I have to tell you don't bother paying the 4 dollers to rent this it's not worth it.

So says Capt. Harold Barnes (Peter Coyote) when things really start to take a turn for the worse and their underwater habitat is abandoned by base due to a typhoon on the surface in Barry Levinson's "Sphere".Four civilian doctors are recruited to assemble a so-called "dream team" to investigate a 300 year old alien spacecraft at the bottom of the ocean that encases a HUGE golden sphere inside. The team consists of: Dr. Norman (Hoffman) - psychologist, Dr.Beth (Stone) - biochemist, Dr. Harry (Jackson) - mathmetician, and Dr Ted (Schreiber) - astrophysicist. Great cast and ensemble acting along with a small part by Queen Latifah as Alice "Teeny" Fletcher and a cameo by Huey Lewis as a helicopter pilot! Why and more importantly, HOW has the spacecraft been underwater for the past 300 years? What is the sphere's purpose? Watch for yourself and find out! If you like your sci-fi mixed with a side of psychology, you will enjoy this film! Happy Watching!

Summary: H.G. Wells Lives
Review: Sphere is based on the book of the same name (very loosely, I might add) which is a novel-length science fiction version of H.G. Wells's short fantasy story The Man Who Could Work Miracles. The movie contains a strong cast including Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson and Sharon Stone. A giant spaceship is found on the ocean floor under a thousand feet of water. An old government report about how to deal with alien contact is put into service and a team is sent to investigate. The three-hundred year old ship turns out to be American but it does contain an alien artifact in the form of a golden sphere. The movie then borrows heavily form Forbidden Planet as the team interacts with the device and are set upon by monsters from the id. Eventually three survivors with the power to work miracles and create monsters from the id decide to wish away their powers. Aside from bearing little resemblance to the book this movie has some very major flaws. Possible the largest is the translation program designed for talking to a supposed alien intelligence. It involves a simple substitution cipher based on a spiral overlapping a qwerty keyboard. A mistake is made so when the intelligence says its name is Jerry it should read Larry. For some reason all of the other Ls and Js translate normally and even when the intelligence says to stop calling it Jerry it shows up as Jerry with no incorrect substitutions. I would have preferred the movie to end the same way the book did with two survivors and the female character only pretending to wish away her powers but that was not to be. From the original trailers I knew the movie would vary greatly from the book so this was not a real disappointment. Therefore I was able to actually enjoy the film for what it was (mistakes and all). It is sort of like watching the original film version of The Shining where you had a good book and a decent movie and only superficial resemblances between the two. But I really did enjoy Sphere and you might, too.

Review: What would happen if all your thoughts came true? That's the plot behind this movie. I liked this movie a lot, I'd recommend renting it. The explanation of the plot is a little weak, and there is potential in the movie for more fun with the story, The acting is decent. Samuel L. Jackson pulls off a good creepy guy, Sharon Stone is great as the borderline-nutcase, and Dustin Hoffman is brilliant as the guy who tries to figure everything out. I wanted a scary movie, but not a horror type film. This fit the bill.
