Summary: Just another bug movie!
Review: Yep it is another bug movie. And the bugs are big. Too bad for the people that read the book. There is no way to justify this movie to them.

However this is a great parity on military types with the grunts being boxy and the elite being pointy. And the gung-ho getting their brains sucked out. This looks like a pilot for a TV series....

Summary: Nice One!
Review: Film of the decade, no question.

Summary: TROOPERS is Excellent Sci-Fi
Review: STARSHIP TROOPERS is high on my list of excellent sci-fi films. Man battles Bug! It is so rare when special effects, story, and sci-fi elements come together -- usually a film relies too much on one and is not balanced by the others.

TROOPERS is also a wickedly funny film. Hats off to director Verhoeven for his twisted sense of humor. The killings that happen during the coarse of the film are lightened by this humor. I howled when a dead space-body bounced off a starship's cockpit window. Verhoeven also drops in hilarious "Public Service Announcements" throughout the film -- my favorite features some twisted kids taking pleasure in squashing cockroaches on the pavement. Hilarious.

The film does not take itself too seriously. The actors are appropriately heroic and attractive. It's almost like the SAVED BY THE BELL cast went into the SPACE ACADEMY!

The effects (LOTS of bugs killing LOTS of troopers) are very cool. The sound effects are wonderful on the DVD!

All-in-all, STARSHIP TROOPERS is a wild sci-fi ride, done very well, with some humor to push it along.

Summary: B-Movie
Review: Starship Troopers had a old idea, make a movie about big bugs and guys with big guns killing them. Hey, that would be worth it. What you don't know is that you have to sit through a sappy love story that seems written by a day dreaming fifth grader. This takes up half the time, played out by professional models rather than actors. The future looks like "Teen" magazine. As such the lines are said for the simple sake of having them said. The characters have no real depth beyond yelling things and shooting things. Once the action picks up there isn't anything to cry about, lots of big bugs getting ripped apart with major firepower. Stimulating as little of the viewer's brain as possible. But to get there you should skip the first half of the movie.

Now if you want a real sci-fi flick with marines and bugs go get Aliens and stop throwing away your money.

Summary: Very Violent Satire
Review: It seemed like a satire to me. Casper Van Dien looks like a G.I. Joe action figure come to life. That alone helps the satire. Paul Verhoeven is making some kind of comment here. I am not sure about what. However it does look like a satire on the military mind and a brain-washed society. Who would want to be a citizen of such a violent society? As one of the students says in class, "My mother says that violence only breeds more violence." This is not for children and I would not let anyone under 18 see this film.

Summary: Spectacular effects but what a dumb movie.
Review: Starship Troopers makes no sense at all.Despite the fact that the human's air superiority can wipe out thousands of bugs in seconds, troops are sent down with guns that fire bullets and are relatively inneffective. Why do the orbiting ships stick so close together, like sitting ducks, when they could be thousands of miles apart? Why do the troops get so close to the bugs when they could fire from 100 yards away? Why don't the troops use naplam, bombs and nukes when they just use bullets that take too long? Why don't they have more air support? The fort is surrounded and yet no grenades are thrown until a bug gets inside the fort(?)and the relieving ship carries no bombs.Despite what some fans say, this is just a big dumb movie that makes no sense at all.Denise Richard's character gets impaled by a bug,yet in the next scene she is firing a gun and sprinting as if nothing has happened to her(an obvious script error).Paul Verhoven's movies such as Starship Troopers and The Hollow Man both flopped.Movie goers are rejecting his eccessive violence and dumb storyline.

Summary: A $100 Million Version of an Epic Sci-Fi War Story
Review: The creative team behind ROBOCOP, writer Ed Neumeier and director Paul Verhoeven (whose other credits include SOLDIER OF ORANGE, TOTAL RECALL and BASIC INSTINCT) have done an energetically ambitious job of turning Heinlein's story into a modern movie. While it is usually a mistake to expect a movie to follow the book (take THE SHINING as an example), this movie manages to utilize the "bug-war" portion of Heinlein's story to do some really innovative things with computer animation.

The industry's current leading animator and inheritor of Harryhausen's mantle is Phil Tippett, who animated the robot ED209 in ROBOCOP, worked on JURASSIC PARK, and was in charge of the bug animation here. The movie contains some truly spectacular and realistic "cast of thousands" bug vs. human battle scenes, and some fairly strong bug vs. human violence (though most violence is edited so fast that if you blink you'll miss it). The bugs themselves are tremendously realistic throughout. The huge spaceships maneuvering about in the war scenes are equally impressive. The DVD affords either widescreen letterbox or 16:9 anamorphic views of the action, by the way.

According to the filmmakers' commentary on this double-sided DVD, the most disgusting thing in this movie for many in the audience was Denise Richards' fickleness. The fact that she throws over the hero for another boyfriend for most of the movie was apparently outrageous for some viewers. In fact she comes off as smart and pragmatic, if a bit like the "ice-princess-next-door."

I like the script, personally, and I particularly like the outstanding job done by Dina Meyer in portraying the "Dizzy" character. She is athletic, naturally beautiful, and says more with a look than many others can with dialog. Her appearance on the DVD in make-up only sharpens the contrast between her portrayal and her usual "look" -- quite an impressive lady.

The efforts to criticize fascism in the film fall flat, probably because the Nazi references appear without explicit comment, and viewers may legitimately feel ambivalent about their intent. In fact I thought the long leather coats on the good guys were off-putting myself. Probably, the filmmakers took too much for granted in assuming we all believe "gung ho" patriotism is as reprehensible as they do.

Ed Neumeier is a friend of mine, and he tells me he intended the "90210 in space" tone of this movie. Luckily, the young cast is talented enough to make this work mostly, and I can say with confidence that the $100 million budget is all up there on the screen. The effects are as good as anything you'll see currently, and there are lots of them. All in all, this is an impressive movie. The 2-sided DVD contains a lot of extras -- commentary, documentary, trailer, extra scenes -- and I recommend this version for those interested in an enhanced experience.

Summary: "Starship Bloopers"
Review: Having read the book several times by Mr. Heinlein, I must admit that this movie is an absolute FLOP! It states that it is based on the book, and that is about as far as it goes. I sincerely hope that Mr. Heinlein did not roll over in his grave when this travesty was released.

Sure, the computer graphics were stupendous! That is why I have given it 2 stars. Even that is being generous. It seems that the producers spent all of the money on the graphics and then realised that they still had to outfit all of the "troopers". The troopers armor was about as advanced as the what the US Army used in Vietnam; Flak Jacket and Helmet. The book is all about the very advanced, powered-armor that the Mobile Infantry used in combat and the exacting, grueling training that the individual had to endure just to become qualified in using said armor.

The Mobile Infantry was the heart of the novel, whereas they were a "leftover" in the movie. Also in the book, the "Bugs" were technologically advanced, having starships, missiles, etc..

If the producers would have spent more effort on the capabilities of the Mobile Infantry and not squandered most of the effort on the "bugs", this could have been a supurb movie.

As far as the "Totalitarian State" goes, once again the book is different. The movie made humanity seem like the "bad guys".

In the book, to be eligible to vote, one had to have served his country/nation by serving in the military or other type of public/government service. The reasoning behind this, is that the veteran has "earned" the right to vote, and would be more reluctant to use military power for political means. I actually think that the idea has merit. (You have to read the book to understand why.)

This movie is a prime example of "See the movie BEFORE you read the book." Once you have read the book, you'll probably throw the movie away if you already have it. Sorry about the long review, but this movie really got my goat after reading one of the classics of science-fiction lierature.

Summary: Too good to miss....this disc ROCKS THE HOUSE!!
Review: It took 40 years for Hollywood technology to catch up to this Robert Heinlein sci-fi classic, but the BANG is definitely worth the BUCKS!! If you bought your DVD player expecting thrills to take your breath away, HERE THEY ARE! The special FX and cinematography are truly spectacular in "Starship Troopers." Although James Cameron's 1986 "Aliens" was closer to Heinlein's "troopers" in the way he depicted those Colonial Marines heading into a "bugfight" (yeah, I'm sure I'm not the ONLY one who noticed where Cameron got the idea), the movie follows Heinlein's paranoid future where citizens fulfill their civic duty by serving in the military and threats to Earth's existence come anytime, anywhere, and does it fairly closely. Casper Van Dien is OK as the lead character, but the script doesn't really develop the character much, or ANY of the characters, for that matter. That said, the reason to own this movie is the SPECIAL EFFECTS!! The nightmarish alien insects and their entire social structure are recreated on the screen with startling effectiveness. And there is action galore when the bugs and humans clash!! This would be one of my top five choices if I were doing a DVD sales demo!!!

It's wild, funny, scary, campy and thrilling...and mostly FUN!! Get this DVD and TEST YOUR SYSTEM FOR THRILLS!!
