Summary: FX 4, plot 2
Review: Despite some excellent elements, the rather contrived plot of "Dragonheart" fails to live up to the talent and the special effects.

We all know the characters -- the wise, old dragon (voiced by Sean Connery), the heroic knight (Dennis Quaid), the damsel, the evil prince . . .there are no real surprises here.

If you are a fan of Quaid or Connery, or you like sword-and-sorcery, this film will provide you with a pleasant diversion, but if you are on a budget you might want to keep going down the list. END

Summary: Leaping Lizards
Review: Director Rob Cohen (XXX & The Fast and the Furious) brings mythical creatures to life in the grand fantasy adventure "Dragonheart". In a medieval land, Bowen (Dennis Quaid), a fallen knight of the old code of honor, forms an unlikely alliance with a noble fire-breathing beast (voiced by Sean Connery). These two sworn enemies aid a peasant rebellion against a spoiled tyrant. "Dragonheart" is a truly entertaining epic fantasy for the whole family. Its enchanting story is quite engaging and its characters are certainly memorable. The film contains some great action, amazing special effects and delightful humor. Dennis Quaid delivers a surprising performance. Draco is a terrific visual creation and Sean Connery is perfectly cast as the voice of the dragon. The cast also includes David Thewlis, Pete Postlethwaite, Dina Meyer and Julie Christie.

As one of Universal's earliest DVD releases, "Dragonheart" Collector Edition is a highly recommended purchase. The 1996 fantasy adventure is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen format. The DVD contains a spectacular picture quality with striking detail and bright colors. Its 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is great with fine clarity and good bass. Unlike the DTS version, this DVD features numerous supplements including an audio commentary by director Rob Cohen, the excellent "The Making of Dragonheart" documentary, theatrical trailers, outtakes, picture galleries and production notes. Overall, "Dragonheart" (Dolby Digital version) has a superb DVD presentation and scores a definite "A-".

Summary: I Don't Know Why I Gave This 4 Stars, But I Did
Review: truth be told, this IS as cheesy as it looks. sean connery (the most over-rated "sexy-voiced" man in the buisness) dubs his voice in with an obviously CGI dragon. dennis quade, a convincing actor, is a knight (or some type of old swordsmen, whatever) who slays dragons--a dragonslayer (see the connection here?). but when he comes along the last of the dragons, he just can't kill the cute-n-cuddly beast. well, he tries to, and wants to, but he ends up befriending him. you see, this particular dragon has enabled a horrible evil teenage boy to become ruler over the local place by healing him long ago when he was deathly sick by giving him half his heart (hence the title). dennis the dragonslayer sweared to kill connery the dragon, yet ended up using him as an intended tool to stop the kids diabolical reign. in the end, the dragon is placed in the stars once he dies and the beautiful music plays as he shines. really, it was some pretty good musical scoring. but nothing--and i mean NOTHING--can stop this from being your average cheesy knight movie. the reason i gave this four stars? hell if i know. i guess because in the end it did turn out with an okay story. i must admit, i got a little teary-eyed when that final climax rose with the music and the stars and...boo-friggin-hoo. but seriously, it was slightly touching (in a non-sexual way). it has more storyline to it than what i typed, so don't completely blow it off just because i didn't explain all the worthy details of this film. check out the other reviews for that. i'm just letting you know that this IS a knight movie, this IS a dragon movie, and this IS a fantasy film about some pretty laughable stuff. still, i wanted something else to review since i hadn't reviewed in a little while, and i chose this one. i know you die-hard dragonlovers will sign in on your twelve different amazon IDs and keep marking this review as "not helpful", but please--give the other non-D&D people a chance will you? we're all nerds in our own way. i'm just not the knight/dragon nerd. and so i guess my point is, if you're not into cheesy adventure/action/fantasy films about dragons and the knights who befriend them, then you might wanna skip this movie.
...seriously, i don't why i rated this "4 stars". go figure.

Summary: Good fantasy movie
Review: This is a good movie about a knight (Bowen) who fights dragons. In this movie dragons are seen as being Godlike. When a young prince is dying the people ask a dragon (Draco) to save him. Draco reluctantly gives him a piece of his heart to save his life. Draco makes the prince swear that he will not be like his father. Draco was reluctant because he did detect some evil in the boy. When the boy turns out to be bad like his father Bowen, played by Dennis Quaid, blames the dragon and swears to kill all dragon's. Draco then becomes the last surving dragon. Draco tells Bowen that his heart did not corrupt the boy and that the evil was in him. Bowen has to kill Draco because as long as he is alive the prince cannot die.

This is a simple story of good vs evil. Fantasy movies tend to be mindless bloodbaths. For a fantasy movie it is quite good.

Summary: If only I saw more fighting.
Review: I saw this film about 2 times. That isn't much compared to what I remembered. A dragon, last of his kind, pessimistic and downcast, joins up with a warrior that's out for him.

Seems like a normal plot.

But throughout the film there is a message of hope for all humans. We only can see face value at times, but in the end it's always the heart that we see.

This is the truth that will always prevail.

Summary: A genuine classic in composite digital 3D animation
Review: If you have enjoyed Gollum in the epic Lord of the Rings movie series, you must see this. This is one of the most successful early attempts at including digital 3D animation in live action features. You either love or hate the story, cast and characters. I am a big fan of all three. It is a fun and heart warming movie.

Summary: One of the best fantasy films of recent years!
Review: In 1996, a fantasy film by the name of "Dragonheart" hit theaters and didn't really garner much at the box-office. Quite a shame, because this movie is quite a good one. "Dragonheart" took place during medieval times in England with a story about a bloodthirsty king's son's (David Thewlis) pact with a dragon to live with the half of the dragon's heart. The dragon, Draco (Sean Connery's voice), later befriends Bowen (Dennis Quaid), Einon's mentor, after they realize Einon has the same treachorous blood of his father's.

The acting is quite good in the film, especially Quaid and Pete Postlethwaite as Gilbert (he's a poet and a monk, and he gets the best lines). Julie Christie plays Einon's mother and she does a decent job. The only one I can detract is Dina Meyer's and considering her character's father is murdered by the evil king, I expected a more angst-filled performance. Unfortunately, she plays the role rather blandly and it's quite a shame; she was excellent in "Starship Troopers" (one year later) and very good in her small role in "Star Trek Nemesis." Oh well, onto the other good stuff...

The dragon effects were VERY WELL DONE and detailed, and it's not surprising that one of the head dragon creators (Phil Tippett) from 1981's "Dragonslayer" is involved. Sean Connery gives the character much personality and I'd place him #2 in the best lines category for this film (as I mentioned above, Gilbert has most of the best). The music was composed by Randy Edelman, a prolific composer of notable films including "Kindergarten Cop," "The Last of the Mohicans," and the brilliant "Gettysburg," among many other films. The music is superb.

On a closing note, I'd say for recent years, this is an awesome film. It may not be academy award winning material, but it's visual grandness for the medieval period and it's overall great sense of fun, it's a winner. It almost feels like those old Indiana Jones/Romancing the Stone/Back to the Future/etc. films in which a movie is content on being fun, whether or not a lot of brainpower is involved. A good film, excellently directed by Rob Cohen ("Fast and the Furious").
