Summary: Lord of the Rings
Review: Easily the best book to movie translation ever made. The film is long (almost 3 hours) and leaves you wanting more of the same! Even though some parts had to be cut, the main story is unaffected and even those few people who have not read the books can easily follow the story. Visually the film is dead on to the descriptions given in the book. Peter Jackson has done an outstanding job with all aspects from casting to settings to production. Once you have seen it, you will be counting the days to the release of the Two Towers.

Review: Easily the best movie of 2002. It's destined to be a classic that will played over and over 20 years from now (Like Star Wars and the Godfather). Even if you didn't enjoy the books (I read the first 25% of the first one and had to put it down)you will love this film. Tight story, excellent special effects, and great casting make this film one of the best films ever made.One thing should be mentioned to all would-be buyers: Since this is part of a trilogy of films that were shot back to back this film sort of just "ends". Being part of a trilogy, there is no major resolution at the end...it leaves off at a certain part of the adventure. That being said, it's still a great film and better than 99.999975% of the stuff out there. Get this film!!!!!

Summary: Masterpiece of adaptation
Review: Easily the most visually stunning film of 2001, it's worth owning for the special effects alone. Yet even more remarkable is the success with which Jackson and his team managed the process of adaptation. This seems to have been achieved through two things. First, casting and performances which are utterly flawless, perfectly capturing the essence of the characters - the loving warmth of the hobbits, the isolated nobility of Aragorn, and the tragic weakness of Boromir. Secondly, an elegant and economical screenplay which excises, reworks or re-imagines whole chunks of the novel, without doing any real violence to the story. Indeed, if anything, it is improved by the changes - I certainly found it more exciting, more gripping, and more moving. This is what an adaptation should be: not a simple translation from page to screen, but a transposition from one register to another, making the film the occasion for a new imaginative experience without losing the qualities for which the novel is so loved. That's no mean feat - and if there were any justice in Hollywood, come Oscar-time this spectacularly successful effort would have been more amply rewarded. For my money, it left "A Beautiful Mind" in the dust.

Summary: one little annoyance for the whole film
Review: ELIJAH WOODS DRIVES ME CRAZY! His acting has and always will suck. Also, the film is a little to cheezy. Book isn't cheezy, but it got lost in book to movie translation. Otherwise its very good, but I cant watch it because Eli wood's acting is so horrible i want to tear my hair out.

Summary: It stands by itself
Review: Even if you aren't a huge Tolkein fan, you may enjoy this movie yet. It is very true to the book though, a rarity amongst blockbusters. The cinematography and scenery is breathtaking. It was well-shot, well-directed and well-casted. It gets a bit overwhelming at times because there are a lot of characters and places to keep track of. It's a bit lenghty, but you really couldn't tell the story any other way. Overall a very good film.

Review: Even if you haven't read the book, definitly a great epic story.
Far greater than the star wars films and their predictable, dumbed-down stories. Seeing this movie may encourage to read the book series, which Tolkein wrote as detailed histories of his fantasy world. Can't wait for the DVD and parts 2 and 3.

Summary: Awesome, must see movie for everyone
Review: Even if you haven't read the Lord of the Rings, this is a must see movie. The characters are believeable and the cinematography is absolutely fantastic. You will sit spellbound for the entire movie, 3 hours, and wish for more when it is over. The Two Towers can't come out soon enough!

Summary: How will it be surpassed?
Review: Even if you read the book, saw the movie, or bought the VHS, you should thing about getting the DVD too. Maybe even the extended version.
This play cannot be surpassed and time will not change that.
Screenplay, story, music and actors make a fantastic and heroic world come true, a world that you can be in as long as the DVD lasts.
The quality of the whole production is one of the best ever. Maybe Lord of the Rings is for our generation what Ben Hur (the movie) was for the previous generation : Unique, a film to use as a guideline for others. Have a nice time in Middle earth.

Summary: Typical Hollywood Treatment
Review: Even the very best of intentions do not ensure greatness. This movie is quite a success because it will do well at the box office, but for those of us who truly cherish this story and these characters, it can only be a disappointment. I realize that a movie cannot include each and every aspect of a book, but for the sake of brevity too much was lost and/or misrepresented. Many reviewers are not concerned with the massive changes of the story from The Shire to Rivendell, including Galdalf's unexplained absence which caused Frodo to set out on his own, the absence of the house at Crickhollow, Sam's "Conspiracy" with Merry and Pippen, The Old Forest/Tom Bombadill and the Barrow Downs. For me, these events represent the development of the relationships and the characters of the four hobbits, and the exclusion of these events leaves them shallow. The LOTR is SO much about the characters. We never really get a sense of Sam's devotion to Frodo until the end of this movie. Sam is such a HUGE part of the entire trilogy - perhaps the most important character - and for him to lack such depth on film is just a crime. We also miss Merry's maturity, leadership and his support of Frodo. Instead, he and Pippen are little more than idiots who just happen to get swept along in the adventure. Does Arwens expanded role serve any real purpose besides adding a bigger female character? Is anyone else tired of Hollywood's need to put a love story at the center of every movie? Yes, Tolkien wrote about it, but it's not a significant enough event to dedicate a scene where she and Aragorn are standing in the dark professing their love and devotion to one another...not to mention we miss Frodo's defiance of the Ringwraiths at the Ford - another important character aspect. It's a good thing that Arwen was there to invoke the river against the Ringwraiths and add the form of horses to it. It would be a shame for Gandalf to take credit for that all to himself, wouldn't it?! As for Gandalf's rescue from Orthanc, I guess we must just assume that the Great Eagle was called by the "moth" who was actually Radagast the Brown? There's also a lot of talk about the scenery and the effects and there certainly is a lot of "eye candy" but just not much substance. I'll stop there, but let me just end by saying that this is not a bad movie on it's own merit, but it should be made clear that this is a movie BASED on The Lord of the Rings / Fellowship of the Ring and should not be confused with the real deal. I hope I haven't blown my chances to date Liv Tyler...

Review: Even though a lot of people didn't rate it the highest it is the highest it has great action a nd a little bit of everything it has:friendship, action, magic, comedy, and much much more I think it is a movie for the family and I advise you to buy it!
