Summary: Don't bother... violence against young adults is tiresome.
Review: This movie was entirely too long, and slow. I think Costner was trying to gain "shock value". The inferred violence against a mule and the depicted violence against children (younger adults) were completely uncalled for. If you're looking for a western, watch Tombstone (again).

Summary: Critics are fools! This is a very good film.
Review: Most Hollywood films tread the well-trodden trail. This film tries a new mix of themes and is quite thought-provoking and visually stunning. I have found movie critics to be largley untrustworthy and their panning of this film was further proof to me of how fickle their judgments can be.

Review: One again the movie makers have taken a wonderful book and carved, maimed it up in the name of Hollywood. Spend your money on the David Brin's book, not this movie.

Summary: not the novel, but a good story nonethless
Review: I looked forward to this movie as I am a Fan of David Brins and have read and reread my copies of The Postman (I'm on my third copy) until they fall apart. While the movie is frequently slow paced and completely leaves out the thought provoking aspect of Dena and her Army Scouts, the movie itself conveyed the essential tale without bothering to name the protagonist. He is simply "The Postman" and becomes an archetype. He is definitely a hero of the modern mold and finds himself becoming more. A drifter who hits on a good scam, then starts living the role of the scam. How often do we do the same ourselves? I would have done only one scene different...I still preferr Brin's version of The Postman reading addressee's names at the gate. Other than that, I found it a good tale and an enjoyable read. I think the professional critics (movie reviewers) are spoiled by movies that hand people the conclusions and don't make them think. Of course they don't like this one.

Summary: A very good, largely underrated work
Review: It is a surprise for me why so many critics can't find anything good to say about The Postman. Personally, I find it a very compelling, enjoyable and thought-provoking movie touching upon many interesting themes of authority, fate, and the role of improbable but possible events in history (the skeleton episode that eventually leads to the rebirth of a nation). Somewhat too similar to Dances with Wolves in style and dynamics, but quite a successful movie overall.

Review: The setting in the not so distant future without the high tech world was kind of a cool slant. but he should have taken out the little general much sooner, and the very ending was kind of lame.

Summary: It is a classic epic, a complete story from beginning to end
Review: Costner has created a real hero. As with many real life heroes, this one is created mostly by accident. The Postman begins as a humble traveling storyteller and ends up being the story. The common people are looking for someone (as we always are) to lead them out from the post war chaos. While the antagonist wants to impose a dictatorship on the people, the Postman becomes, by accident, their hope to restore the United States of America. In the end, it is the people who make the Postman a hero, and in that one critical moment, he answers the call. It is a truism that our heroes are usually not all the bad things they did but their glorious moment in the sun.

Review: If you are a Costner fan that happens to be somewhat patriotic, you will love this movie. I'm just sorry that I couldn't have played a part in the making of such an epic film.

Summary: What was Costner thinking with this turkey?
Review: This movie is an insult to anyone who has read the book upon which it is based (it's by David Brin and is several orders of magnitude better). I'm assuming that the scriptwriters read the back cover of the novel and extricated a script out of it. I actually could have forgiven the perversion of the original story (artistic license being what it is) if the movie was even the least bit watchable. It isn't. Too bad there isn't a No-Star rating. Don't waste your time with this exercise in futility. Read the original novel.

Summary: This is an epic tale of the patriotism that we have lost.
Review: While this movie has its faults it was wrongly slammed by reviewers and moviegoers alike. The cinematography is beautiful. The message of we have lost after WW3 is also that which we have lost already in our society. This movie tells of people finding innocence again and reclaiming the patriotism that our ancestors sovaliantly fought for. If you watch the movie for what it really is you will much more than what is on the slightly corny surface. Don't miss this movie, and watch it at least twice, you'll get a lot out of it. END
