Summary: Logan's Run
Review: The pleasure of Logan's Run is in the fantasy. Its a world where everyone in the city is young and fairly attractive. The women (and men) wander through the city braless wearing pastel chiffon and guaze. If you are a real man, you are a Sandman. Unlike the other men in the city you wear black. Your job is to hunt down runners who resist the idea of dying at age 30. You get a very cool gun and laugh heartily as you torment the runners for their weakness and pity them when they die for a silly idea. Sex in the city is as easy as dialing up a new partner on the circuit and changing the channel if they don't suit your taste. To a teenager, as I was when I saw this movie, this was stimulating stuff. But it is Peter Ustinov playing a sweet dotty old man who lives in the ruins outside the city that steals the show. In a city populated with people where being shallow one dimensional sheep is considered a virtue, Its really Ustinov's performance that lights up the film with true personality. Its his delightful prescence which brings some resonance and credibility to Logan and Jessica's desire to evolve into humanity. Logan's Run won an Academy award for cinematography but some areas like the domed city are a unabashedly cheesy. The domed city is all too obviously an architectural model and the inner city too obviously a shopping mall. Rainbow colored holographic effects, obviously considered futuristic in the seventies, stand out a little too bravely dating the film badly. But somehow much of the films charm and watchability comes from its cheesiness. Just as Forbidden Planet is fun because it looks like it was made in the 1950s, Logan's Run is clearly a product of the seventies. This provides a lot of camp fun, and keeps the film a cult favorite that inspires a large number of fan websites offering tons of background and tips on how to make guns and costumes from the film. The DVD provides a director's commentary with inserts from Michael York and costume designer Bill Thomas. Fan's interested in hearing more about the deleted scenes mentioned in the commentary might have fun hunting down some of these sites.

Summary: The Book Was Better
Review: This a good adaptation of great science fiction classic-instead of remaking movies like "Planet of the Apes" someone should update this one.

Summary: A Bargain!
Review: This is a great buy. While the packaging is very plain (the booklet from the black-cover anniversary edition isn't included), the disk offers everything that was on anniversary edition DVD, and you can choose between the letterboxed on one side and the pan-and-scan version on the other side (pan-and-scan wasn't included on the anniversary disk). While I can't imagine why anyone would want the pan-and-scan, which chops nearly half the picture from this visually stunning film, it's here for those who want it.

There's just one thing keeping me from giving it a fifth star. There was a Special Edition laserdisc a few years back that had everything on this DVD, plus an amazing collection of magazine articles, prop photos, and other goodies. Some of this material is hard to find, and now that I know that it exists, I would like to see it on DVD. It would be a real treat to the hardcore fans who can no longer get the LD and need something to tide us over while we wait for the long-promised remake.

Summary: LOGAN runs out of steam...
Review: LOGAN'S RUN is casebook example of why GREAT sci-fi movies are hard to make, therefore, few and far between. Michael York and Richard Jordan play elite, government-licensed assassins called Sandmen. The job is terminating citizens who evade CAROUSEL. "Carousel" is godless religious ritual celebrating DEATH. By ordained sacrifice of people, The CITY of MAN "lives". "Over-30's"...cyber-organic TIME CLOCKS glowing in damning IDENTIFICATION...commend themselves to high-tech REINCARNATION. "Renew!" screams the ecstatic mob of spectators who've assembled to celebrate a pleasure-jaded Culture of Death with ultimate, SNUFF Reality Shows. This opening sequence is genuinely frightening; every Carouseler on the Wheel of Fortune is incinerated by Laser. SANDMEN are black-clad acolytes hunting Unbelievers... RUNNERS... in a nation-cult of "Youthland uber alles"......

LOGAN runs rapidly downhill after York is forced to join a rebellion (led by Jenny Agutter). The purpose ( rebels are clearly intended to be Christians wearing an ankh/ansate Cross in opposition to The City's Mark )is Freedom in the Promised Land (outside the City.) Logan's Run turns from hunt to QUEST and hunter to initiate in uneven "adventure" with Sandmen blasting Good Guys in what usually looks like a Shopping Mall. Peter Ustinov's cameo ( New Age Moses welcoming Runners baptized by fire and water) almost works. But not quite. Sci-fi allegory is difficult to pull-off (Recently: PLANET OF THE APES) BLADE RUNNER is a visual wonder, for example, combining acting; art direction; theme; fx and je ne sais quoi to produce a classic. LOGAN's RUN has actors and theme...several scenes do "work" to the max. But there are just too many cardboard parts and unintentional laughs. Like the Hare...or maybe the Universe...the movie starts-out with a big bang but whimpers out of steam to an ending, both pretentious and silly. LOGAN's RUN does not renew!

Summary: An Old Favorite
Review: This is a thought-provoking film that stands on it's own 25 years later. This film has much less of the "duh" factor that I associate with a movie such as Star Wars. This is sci-fi for grown-ups, with a few "gee-whiz" concepts thrown in to keep everybody interested.

While it is based on Nolan's work, I found that there are many parallels to Ayn Rand's book, Anthem. The dangers of closed society egilalitarianism was a popular subject in the mid-70s. Books like Logan's Run and Anthem (though written many years before) inspired this movie. Rush's rock masterpiece 2112 was also a punctuation mark of the social atmosphere and concerns of 1976.

Summary: Great 70's movie...
Review: Even if you're not into science fiction, this is a great movie to watch, if not own. In a society where nobody lives over 30 years of age, it's interesting to see how humanity has evolved. It seems that almost everybody is OK with dying prematurely at age 30 - it shows how callous humanity can become when they are "going along with the crowd" or (unwittingly or not) become involved in "groupthink." This movie show how these problems can be avoided; it is possible to break out of the mold. Although it can be painful at times, it is possible to be an individual within a socialistic environment.

This movie is a classic! The DVD version is especially clear, and it gives some good features with it. I had hoped it might include some of the deleted scenes, but these seem to be largely lost. Although I remember seeing parts of this movie years ago, I appreciate it more as an adult. Now that I'm older, I can understand the meaning behind this movie.

I encourage everybody to at least watch this movie once. At times, the effects, scenery, and characters are a little cheesy or outdated or two-dimensional. But, it was made in the mid-70's, so what can you expect?! Right now, at Amazon, it's selling for a really good price - well worth the money!

Summary: Run Logan!
Review: This film is a bit dated but the FX still hold up pretty well. Even though you know the distance shots are of miniature models you still like the eye candy. The premise of a society of no one over 30 years old is interesting. After a nuclear war because of a limited supply of food they must live in a dome. They go to Carousel when a crystal in their hand turns red and flashes at age 30. Are they truly renewed in Carousel? Only the search for for sanctuary by Logan (Michael York) and Jessica (Jenny Agutter) outside the dome in the wilderness will tell. Since Logan was a Sandman that killed runners (those trying to escape from Carousel), he will have a problem finding sanctuary outside the dome now that he is a runner. The story moves along and it will keep your interest better than many 70s SciFi films. This movie is well worth the $...for the DVD since this copy looks completely restored and the sound quality is very good. It includes a few extras as well. A good addition for any DVD library.

Summary: Logan's Run
Review: I think that Logan's Run is definitely in the class of those 70's science fiction flicks which we can still enjoy today. Even though the special effects are dated, they do not detract from the movie. Michael York and Jenny Agutter portray their characters well.

When I was growing up I enjoyed this movie primarily for its story. As an adult I can appreciate the movie's message at a deeper level.

Summary: The best sci-fi movie ever
Review: I remember first watching this movie when I was 7 years old.It put me in such awe back then and still does today.I believe this movie should have been credited with launching the age of the special effects not Star Wars.A 5 star masterpiece.

Summary: Stunning SCI-FI
Review: Logan's Run is a dazzling sci-fi film. It is set in a very "alien" future of the United States; only everyone is forced to live indoors in a "City of Domes." Society is peaceful and fun loving. When you reach 30, you are to renew your life through a ritual or never live again.

The story of Logan's Run is quite frightening. Director Michael Anderson does a fantastic job of keeping the frightening aspects of the story going. From the pleasant yet somewhat menacing voice of the main computer to the idea behind the "Carousel", you never for a minute doubt what is going on and you really pull for the central characters.

The DVD transfer is good, probably as good as they are going to get, because some scenes of the film always looked a little "muddy." The enhanced soundtrack is in Dolby and while not 5.1, is still sounds much better than the VHS. The commentary is good but nothing spectacular. And the widescreen is really nice!

A word of caution. While the film is rated PG, there are several scenes of brief nudity, one of which really doesn't further the plot any and is unnecessary (in fact, in the commentary, the scene takes the director by surprise and he says he forgot about it). The other is an elaborate scene in the "love shop." Despite that, there is very little graphic violence and little to no profanity.

Logan's Run is a solid film. It looks a little dated now, but still entertains!
