Summary: REIGN OF DIALOGUE (AKA: SHOW ME THE DRAGONS!!!)
Review: There is nothing negative I can say about this dragonless film that hasnt already been said other than this would have been a pretty good made for TV movie, but as a major motion picture its totally unacceptable. Dinotopia on ABC had more reptiles running around in it. Rob Bowman you owe me $8.50

Summary: triumph of style over substance
Review: I put off having my say on this movie, after multiple viewings, because frankly it leaves me with mixed emotions. A boy, visiting his mother in underground works, see the awakening of a myth - very much now reality and suddenly, England suddenly is toast. The performances are strong, yet shallow...actors doing the best with what they are given to work with, and I think that is the core of the problem with ROF...no HEART. You don't really care about this people, it's basically an eye-popping special effect show. So much of what could have been an engrossing story comes across as it wow look at the dragon.

There is no doubt the Dragons are believable. They can make you think dragons are real. But while Special Effects are amazing, you need to hang them on a story of people to engage the audience. Compare either versions of The Thing, The Terminator, or the Classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the horror works because you CARE about the people.

As it is, sit back and route for the Dragon....I was really looking forward to this one, and just feel it really missed the target. Shame....

Summary: SILLY BUT FUN
Review: Matthew McConaughey should have lost the tattoos and the vacant stare, and maybe this tidy little sci-fi thriller would have worked better. And Christian Bale looked so much like James Brolin and turned out to be rather wimpy vs. McConaughey, so that didn't help either. And why waste Alice Krige in such a small, if significant, role? Ah. but that great Isabella Schoppora (or something like that?) was beautiful and turned out to be the "heart" of the movie.
The effects are mindblowing and the best dragons to ever hit the silver screen---wish we'd have had more of them, too. But overall, it's a fairy tale, replete with sacrificial heroes and tense plots, but somehow the final showdown seemed a little rushed and anti-climactic.
But I enjoyed watching it and entering without too great expectations, find it a movie worth seeing.

Summary: A Real Drag!!
Review: I really, really wanted to enjoy this movie. The concept was great. Fine actors. The director of "X Files - The Movie." So what happened?? Huge fire-breathing dragons have laid waste to the world's capital cities and reduced them to ash. Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale are two post apocalyptic dragon slayers blasting the monsters out of the sky. Well, I gotta be honest with you. This is one boring movie. REALLY boring. The few action sequences are fine and the dragons themselves look fantastic, searing through the skies and spitting flames. But the film is too talky and the characters unsympathetic. I was looking forward to the movie's end and boy, was I glad when it came. I'm getting rid of my copy.

Summary: Enjoyable movie
Review: Some movies cause you to question their logic, others you just accept it. I just accepted it for Reign of Fire, and it caused me to really enjoy the movie. The computer graphics were better than expected, and if you have a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound system, crank it up...it's awesome. Great performances by the leads, especially Christian Bale, mixed with good special effects makes this a worthwhile film. The DVD has some nice extras, too, making it worth the purchase.

Summary: Worthless
Review: Lets face it, this movie stank!

Talk about taking a really excellent idea and just destroying it...

The basic plot line is that a dormant dragon has awakened and multiplies to, in effect, create (yet another) post appocalyptic world in which man has to fend for himself in a medieval type setting.

When I saw the trailers and clips from this film I thought it was going to be excellent, but what I found was a uninteresting story about a bunch of people arguing about tomatoes and a supposedly highly skilled team of dragon slayers that loose half their crew everytime the kill one dragon..

My personal opinion is that this movie has wasted what could have been top notch idea and has prevented any decent dragon movies to be made for a while

Stay away

Summary: How should one deal with terror posed?
Review: The earth is beseiged by an awesome terror that threatens to destroy all. Quinn, Christian Bale, wants to hide away from the terror and hope for peace. Denton Van Zan, played by Matthew McConaughey, wants to eliminate the terror. Here the terrorists are giant dragons that destroy everything. It seems that these dragons live on ash. Destruction of all gives them life and power. They destroy everything, eat it, and then they hibernate until the earth is replenished. Van Zan is running out of men just as he figures out how to stop the terror forever. Quinn refuses to help, preferring to keep hidden away in their fortified castle.

This is a movie that works well as action movie as well. I liked the special effects of the dragons, fire and the landscapes a lot. I did keep looking at McConaughey and asking myself, is that the same guy from the movie CONTACT? He does a great job as the focused leader of the American troops willing to sacrifice all, in land far from home to end the terror. In the end Quinn says' you were right!

Summary: The Dragons Should Have Burned The Movie Too
Review: Rob Bowman film mixing medieval fantasy with modern apocalyptic theme starring Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey as modern dragon killers.

The spawn of devastating dragons are accidentally released through a mining accident and overwhelm the Earth but you don't get to see that. What you get is a big leap in time after which isolated pockets of humans (Yanks and Brits) reduced to mere subsistence remain to defeat the flying fire-breathing reptiles. The unfortunate thing is that there isn't much to see in the movie at that point: as if the best parts of the movie had also been burned by those elusive dragons. The only thing left to burn is the audience really.

The story is actually unimaginative and more of an assortment of cliches to create a mood which never really stands out. Why would modern humans return to dwelling in castles and medieval customs? Just because their enemy are dragons and both are a product common to medieval lore? Why not live in abandoned subways or underground hideouts such as in the "Terminator"?

The dialogue is also stereotypical and the characters shallow. Freedom loving Yankees competing against their snobish Brit counterparts. The worst part is the story having been so dissected that you don't even know what's going on anymore. After being frustrated with the bad sound mixing and acting, you probably won't even care about understanding the story.

I wouldn't recommend even renting this movie because there isn't much to watch in it except special features on bad film making. Save your money.

Summary: Good dragon special effects!
Review: I loved the dragon special effects. They were awesomely realistic. The story line wasnt that good. Acting was adequate, but not great. Some times I thought the entire thing cointrived, but if you like dragon ergo dinosaurian effects, this might do for you.
I wouldnt buy it again. [ Rental much less disappointing!]
