Summary: What book did they base this on???
Review: They really out to change the name of this movie. On its own, titled "Smooshin' Bugs Or: How I Won the War", it might just be a fairly entertaining, if simplistic, action/antiwar pic. As it stands, purporting to be based on Robert Heinlein's book of the same name, it's bottom of the barrel rubbish. The writer and director obviously MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT of Heinlein's classic treatise of human political, military, and social/cultural doctrine. I can see two tracks the makers of this bunk may have had in mind: 1) They harbored under the delusion that Heinlein was glorifying war, in which case they satirized his novel; or 2) They think Heinlein was satirizing gung ho war fiction, and they made the film faithfully. WRONG!!!! Heinlein does neither! Watching this garbage makes one wonder if all the production team did was read the back cover of the book. Now all you fans, don't get me wrong --- taken by itself it's not bad. But trying to say that they've faithfully committed Heinlein's great work to film is either stupidity or insanity, or both.

Summary: See it for the battle sequences
Review: Yes, the tactics are foolish and unrealistic, but it's the exciting battle scenes with their fabulous special FX that are the meat (bloody red [or green] meat, actually) of this movie. Not for the squeamish, but if you have the kind of sensibility that can revel in the FUN of mass slaughter, especially when so well choreographed and directed as it is here, you'll get a kick out of "Starship Troopers".

It's been many years since I've read the novel, but Heinlein was certainly a right-winger (not, I think, a fascist*) and Verhoeven is definitely not, though his pointing up of the evils of fascism is rather obvious, in my view.

It's a slick production, concentrating more on how great things LOOK rather than whether they make sense, but let's face it, there hasn't been a really intelligent science fiction movie since "Forbidden Planet".

*Compare how Orson Scott Card handles a similar topic in his great novel "Ender's Game".

Summary: The best war movie there has ever been?
Review: Absolutely mind-blowing and superb is the only way to describe this film. Watch it with a crate of beer and enjoy the 2 dimensional cheesey characters get ripped apart in some of the most graphic scenes ever to make the big screen. The action is very well paced all the way through and I loved the cut scenes integrating the news and media propaganda. Want to know more...?

I thought it was fantastic even after seeing it for the 3rd time on video. I'm sure this film won't appeal to all people but you won't know if you liked it or not unless you see it. How on earth did this make a 15 certificate in London's West End on it's first release? At least the video has the correct certificate of 18.

The film is best on cinema but failing that just get a 29" widescreen with a Dolby Pro-Logic decoder. An absolute must for action film enthusiasts.

Summary: Starship Troopers!!!!
Review: I feel that Starship Troopers is one of the best movies ever. I do admit that there needs to be a lot of work on the acting but when you have a $90 million budget there isn't a lot of big actors to work with, all your money is going towards special effects and props. Starship Troopers is a great movie with a lot of action and some of the greatest special effects there was in 1997. This can be helped since it was nominated for Special effects along with The lost World and Titanic. I personally thought Starship Troopers should have won. It is a action packed movie with great effects and a lot of Gore. If you like blood and guts then you won't be too dissapointed with this movie. Iv'e owned it the day it was on sale and I never get tired of watching it. I rated it 5 stars and don't miss the largest explosives ever used for special effects in a movie!!!!!!

Summary: GET OVER IT!
Review: I have to wonder if the people whining about the "facist" world presented in this movie bothered to listen to the director's comments on this DVD. If they had, they would have discovered that Paul Verhoven grew up in wartime Holland, and is fully aware of the horrors of war. This movie is intentionally a comic book, and the "over the top" representation is meant to shock you and make you think about what it means to defend a society and how far you are willing to go to do so (how many personal freedoms you are willing to give up). That is fully in the spirit of Heinlein's books (and as much as I loved growing up reading Heinlein, if you don't think he was a raging fascist, you weren't reading between the lines).

Lighten up and enjoy the movie for what it is, an action-packed homage to World War II movies of the 40s. There's a reason why archetypes exist in art and literature--because they pack a lot of meaning, so don't put this movie down because it uses stereotypes to convey political ideas.

Summary: The Terran/Zerg war.
Review: No, your right, the movie has nothing to do with Star Craft, Yet watching it made me feel like I was terran foot soldier! Ok, I can do better than this... The movie was great! I watched it and wonderred why it was so poorly talked about? Sur, some of the effects are ppor like the giant fire worm blow up seen. But it's humor and mix of blood bath battle scenes make this title a definate buy. Few films I see make me want t o\watch them again, but this one is definatly one of the few I do want to see again.

Summary: A Good Movie But It Could Be BETTER!!
Review: Let's just think a moment shall we? These people can pilot starships yet they don't have lasers they don't enen have any tanks or anything I mean if you are going to blow a planet you need a tank. Also the acting could be a lot better, where did they dig these people up I've never heard of them in my life if you are going to have a great movie you could at least have someone that can act!

Summary: Fails to impress
Review: The film is very different from the rather dry book. Anyone who expects a moral lesson from the film will be disapointed: it's just about killing the enemy. Hence, the film includes much violence.

The director has tried to bring some finer points across, though. To those who care to look a little bit deeper it will become evident that the government and the army aren't really the "good guys". In facts they are portrayed as fascists - evident for example from the soldiers' unfiforms which are nearly an exact replica of German uniforms during WW2. The stylized symbol of Earth Government also looks suspiciously similar to Germany's imperial eagle. But I guess such points are lost on 99% of the American audience (see the reviews above).

Summary: STARSHIP TROOPERS ROCKS!!!
Review: STARSHIP TROOPERS was the best movie I had ever seen in a long time. It was filled with action, adventure, and romance. The special effects in that movie are so cool. I say if you want to buy it go ahead you'll enjoy it. I would give it 10 stars but I can't i'm only limited to five stars. THAT'S THE BEST MOVIE.

Summary: Desecration of yet another classic novel
Review: The director somehow manages to turn Heinlein's classic coming-of-age novel into a Nazi propoganda film. Then he shows how little he understood even the terminology in the story by removing the powered personal armor and individual orbital-re-entry capsules but still has the troops referred to as 'cap troopers' - for what? Their stylish hats? Brain-cast alien bugs, so-called because they were the brains of the alien operation, instead are brain-bugs because they eat your brains! And Doogie Howser gets to decide the chain of command in an infantry platoon from his position as a Gestapo officer/telepath. This is another bad example of someone making a 'film adaptation' apparently after having someone read them the highlights of a discussion of a synopsis of the Cliffs Notes for the book's first few chapters. On the plus side, the special effects were outstanding, and the introduction of a love interest, initially just a plot hook in the novel, was also welcome. What would have been more welcome was a disclaimer in the beginning to the effect that "The movie you are about to see has no connection with the book of the same title. Only the names have been kept to confuse you into watching it."
