Rating: Summary: Kinda graphic for a PG-13 but still... Review: I was laughing my head off at this brilliant comedy! Kel Mitchel is one of my favorite actors and I wish he had a bigger part (for a truly great Kel movie, check out Good Burger). I rented this 3 weeks in a row when it came out for rent, egerly awaiting for it to come out on video. And now after what seems like years of waiting, it's finally here!
Rating: Summary: Alright, at best. Review: Well, first off...I LOVED the idea. Struggling superheros was a great idea. It's something that seems so painfully obvious to exist in the comic books but you just didn't think about it.Ben Stiller was the only one I didn't like here. I just couldn't get into his character. The guy was pathetic. The rest though (Macy, Azaria, Garofalo) were great. William H. Macy and his "fights" with his wife were hilarious. Azaria and his mom, the same. Mystery Men, though boring at times, was pretty funny. Its a nice movie to watch if nothing on the rental wall looks good and you have nothing else to do that night.
Rating: Summary: Not the worst, certainly not the best Review: Perhaps the best place to start is to review a little about the movie itself. The city has been swept free of major crime and criminals by Captain Amazing, a real bonafide superhero (who has lots of sponsors). This leaves only second-hand thugs scattered here and there, and little for a superhero to do. In the meantime fledgling (powerless?) superheroes are trying to break into the superhero business with little success -- they spend most of their time getting stomped by low class villains...for 12 years now...and something has got to happen. The "something that has got to happen" is what this movie is all about. OK, things I liked about it: 1) It has a great moral -- common everyday people trying to do good make a difference 2) The common everyday people know that they are common everyday people, and they still try really really really hard 3) The real superhero(?) gets what he deserves 4) Roy got what he deserved, too, once he was inspired to be "Roy" the person he truly is 5) There was no no pretense that this movie was based on comic books 6) It ended. All right...things that I didn't like about it: 1) I had to wade through 2 hours to get to a few minutes of good solid messages about who the real heroes are 2) Spleen was just too much, so was his skunk encounter of the close kind 3) Let's face it, it really was an action comedy movie that didn't have much action, and it wasn't funny, either -- sorry, there were a few scattered bits of British-style humor here and there, but you had to be watching for them 4) It would take multiple viewings to get on the same plane as this movie so you can really enjoy it, but, well, let's just say that I don't think that I could manage the time and the patience to watch the movie several any more times. With that split decision I feel like 3 stars is a fair rating. The trio of superhero wannabes who were barely fit to conquer gerbils (tame or otherwise) at the beginning of the movie did at least show some signs of improvement toward the end of the movie. You've just got to reward improvement. Of course, the only direction they had to go was up. Three stars bordereing on two, but getting three because of the message. Like another reviewer quipped...it could have been worse! Be careful out there. Alan Holyoak
Rating: Summary: You'll laugh the next day ... and the next ... and... Review: When I first saw this movie, I thought it was funny, but not all that great. And yet the next day, while driving, I suddenly remembered some of the scenes from Mystery Men ... and I went helpless with laughter and I almost had an auto accident. The same thing happened the next day ... and the next ... so before I knew it, I was telling all my friends to go rent Mystery Men. Actually, MM is a collection of wonderful comedy moments. Admittedly, it does struggle to coalesce into a well-crafted movie. I should've rated it lower than 5 stars, but darn it, the cast was so talented, and so funny , and at times absolutely perfect ... If you've ever met a clique of likeable wanna-bes, you'll instantly relate to this film (and you probably enjoyed watching Waiting for Guffman, too). I recommend watching this movie without any high expectations, don't force it to be what it isn't. Just let it work its dry, slow, offbeat magic on you. Who knows, the next day you, too, may suddenly find yourself laughing out loud without warning ...
Rating: Summary: Not worth the time Review: Laughed from time-to-time. The parody on comic book superheros was humorous, but the movie was lacking in keeping my attention.
Rating: Summary: "Super hero satire" Review: I am going to go ahead and give this one 3 stars. Yes it's dumb, yes it's formulatic but it is also fun. The movie pokes fun at super heros in general, although I think Batman takes the brunt of it. It laughs at secret identities and how a pair of glasses is sure to fool anyone. This film is just a lot of dumb laughs and you can't help yourself but enjoy it. So you may like this one ( although you may not want to admit it to your friends). I am leaving out anything about the plot because they do a good job of it if you read up above.
Rating: Summary: A Nice Surprise, For Once... Review: I'll be honest, after seeing the previews for this movie in the theaters last summer, I thought it looked just plain stupid. Then when it came to DVD, my girlfriend convinced me to watch it with her when she rented it. And surprise, I was very happy with what I saw. Happy enough to make it part of "our" DVD collection. This movie is definitely a "cult" film and I think that explains why there is such a divided opinion. As mentioned in quite a few of the other reviews, if you have ever picked up a comic book or watched some Saturday Morning/Afterschool Cartoons, you will appreciate the wacky humor contained within this film. Furthermore, it helped me going into this movie with a completely open mind. Though I thought it would be a waste initially, I put all that aside and watched it...and enjoyed it. I laughed consistently throughout this movie and I do so with each time I watch it, discovering new sight gags and verbal jokes. While this movie isn't Oscar worthy, it's definately worth watching once if you're into comedy and/or the previously mentioned subjects. It shouldn't be overlooked because like what happened to me, you may end up being surprised that you enjoy it quite a bit.
Rating: Summary: Stinker Review: Another movie I hoped would be funny, but really wasn't. When I saw the trailer, I said to myself "that's a movie I'd like!" It was not to be. Ben Stiller is miserable, William H. Macy made a bad career decision, and the rest of the cast seemed like they really wanted to be elsewhere!
Rating: Summary: Silly movie... Review: Silly, fun movie. I rented it since it has some stars I like. Glad I didn't buy it. - Wouldn't want to see it again. (Got all I could out of it the first time)
Rating: Summary: Suprisingly entertaining! Review: I'm normally not a fan of this type of movie (i.e. superhero, special effects, the ruthless villain, etc.), but I actually really liked this movie. I found it's spoof on superheroes absolutely hilarious (especially the comment about the glasses). All of the actors are excellent in their roles, and I thought that it had fairly good dialogue--better than most movies of this genre at any rate--the corniness factor was much lower. This is a loser bunch of superheros, so the laughs just keep on coming due to their inadequacies. If you don't normally like this type of movie, I would still suggest that you at least rent it and check it out, because I never would have thought in a million years that I would like it, and I did.
