Summary: wait
Review: This is not an entirely comprehensible version of the book. There is a longer - I believe 3 1/2 hour version of the video that can be found in some exotic video stores that will eventually be transferred to DVD (I hope) which is a much more satisfying series of selected illustrations of the book. But the book is so well written (in parts) that it would be worth the effort just to skip this altogether

Summary: An excellent choice without reading; even better with
Review: I found this move absolutely visually and mentally spell-binding. Having never seen it before or picking up a copy of the 6 novels included in the Dune saga, I was taken aback. I was lucky enough to have someone sitting next to me who had read all 6 of the books to awnser questions throughout the movie. Regardless, one can still highly enjoy this movie with or without all the inticacies of the plot present in the novel. For you other reviewers, I think it is unfair to judge this movie based on it's representation of the series. 2 and 1/2 hours cannot fully entail the entire storyline, and to attempt to do so would make the movie even harder to grasp for the average movie-goer. The Bottom line is: Read the books and see the movie. Try seeing the movie, then reading one of the books, then seeing the movie again, then reading the next in the series and so on. You'll like them both, no matter the order.

Summary: A visionary Sci-Fi masterpiece
Review: This is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time, and probably David Lynch's most ambitious effort as a filmmaker. The stunning visuals and production design are done justice in this release on widescreen DVD. This film is a worthy addition to any science fiction fan's collection.

Summary: A good attempt, much like cramming a V8 into a Ford Escort!
Review: Read the book instead. The movie is full of great special effects and memorable characters, but it's greatest fault is that it was as if Cliff Notes had produced it!

Summary: First movie I ever bought - still my favorite.
Review: If you have read all the 6 Dune books, and remember them well, you will have no problem understanding this movie. In fact, the way the movie does not directly explain away certain key concepts, like the complex integration of the life cycle of the worms with the planet Dune, is the best part. If you want everything explained to you in full detail, with nothing lef to the imagination, go see Armaggedon. If you haven't read the books, you are going to miss so much, even if you think you get it. Read the books, see the movie - it's the only way to get it. You have to commit to reading all the books and understanding fully their concepts, if you want to get movie. It's a lot to ask of anyone, but "Arrakis was made to train the faithful."

Summary: A great story; a classic before the ink was dry.
Review: A long and confusing story? Perhaps so because it drags you into a fantastic world that is complete; appearing to have few reference points in this world. Rereading or viewing the story again takes you back to an increasingly familiar place rich with new discoveries. Then it dawns on me! This could have been written as a historical novel of a Russian dynasty with the Orthodox church and trade routes to the orient etc. But it would never have been as exciting and interesting without the Spice and the worms and the galaxy far far........ Summary: I wholeheartedly concur
Review: Last Saturday I saw the extended version of Dune, after renting and loving the original some months before. I liked it less(the excessive narration got annoying.) but I liked it. Sitting through the first forty five minutes or so, one starts to believe what he's heard about this film, but patience, it becomes a powerful, gripping saga with intelligence not usually instilled in science fiction. Either version a good deal shorter than Titanic, and infinitely better END

Summary: A MEGA favorite
Review: Wish I could give it 10 stars. When I saw this movie in the theater, I sat through it twice. I have never understood the negative reviews. I read and loved the book first (all of them, although the last ones got a bit weird), and loved the movie even more. My only distress is that I have been unable to locate a longer version anywhere, and I REALLY want to see it.

How I wish this movie had been more popular, so that sequels would have been made. Kyle McLaughlin has never lived up to his performance in this movie. I thought he was fabulous, and he WAS Paul for me. END

Summary: A Great movie, but not a good representation of the book.
Review: This is one of the few cases where I would recommend that people see the movie *before* reading the book. When I saw the movie I was awestruck, but when I read the book I realized how much of the story was missing in the film. Because I saw the movie first, I enjoyed both immensely; if I had read the book first, I would have been disappointed by the film.

One word of caution, however: you must find one of the longer versions if you want any of it to make sense. The shorter (~2 hour) version is literally cut to shreds, and is very confusing. I was lucky enough to see a longer version, and trust me, it is well worth the extra time. END

Summary: A definite must-see
Review: Many of the other reviewers are right. Many things are left out that were in the books. But if you judge Dune the movie by movie standards, instead of comparing it to the novel, it is awesome. The special effects are wonderful, considering the time of production, and the cast was extraordinary. If you like science fiction and have an abstract mind, this movie is for you. END
