Summary: The most amazing sci-fi picture made, next to Star Wars...
Review: I read the book long after I watched the movie but unlike some other movies adapted from books, I still love this one. I read The Lost World a year or two before the movie was even being talked about and when I saw it on the big screen I walked out. Dune, however, catches that deep mysterious, psycholigical character of the book most brilliantly. I have seen 3 different edits of this movie. I, like someother reviewers here, want the entire film, all scenes, unedited, in one volume; both DVD and VHS (for those of us without DVD players). At heart this is not a special effects sci-fi movie. There are some original effects but at the heart of the movie is a psycholgical, mysterious type thriller. I think that this is one of the best movies of the last 20 years.

Summary: Dune, future allegory of a present situation
Review: Dune is actually happening today, in the Middle East. Without worms, but with the Spice (Oil). USA, beware for the messiah (read also Nostrodamus). The allegory with the islam is clear, even the names are real (jihad, etc.) This epic Biblian story is wonderfull filmed, although the story itself is a little bit shaky, because of the shortened version. A must for people that want to experience more than science fiction. Negative for people that want just have entertainment.

Summary: Avoid at all costs!!
Review: Dune, one of the most influencial and intrigueing scifi stories of all time, is in itself a great book. The movie version is, however, on the other end of the spectrum. I found it to be innacurate, boring, and worst of all, cheesy. The casting was downright ridiculus; Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck? If I remember correctly, Halleck was supposed to be fat, ugly, and had a great sense of humor. Patrick Stewart, though one of my favorite actors, fulfilled none of those attributes. Then there was the guy who played Paul. Wasn't Paul 15 years old in the book? This guy looks like he's in his mid twenties. I cracked up when I saw who played Feyd Rautha. For gods sake, man, Sting? And Feyd, in the book, was also supposed to be only 17. Anyway, perhaps I've said enough, after all, I only watched the first hour. I was afraid that if I watched the whole thing, it would ruin my perception of the book. The only purpose this movie served was how to pronounce some of the words in the book. I never knew how to pronounce Dr. Yueh before I watched the movie. Thats the only thing keeping this movie from getting less than two stars.

Review: The movie takes some liberties, such as adding the wierding modules... In the book, there was a wierding way of fighting, but no modules. Overall, being a Dune fanatic, I give the movie 6 stars... I just wish I could get my hands on the unedited version.

Summary: Wish I had the four hour version
Review: I love this movie, but I do wish that there was a full edition of the movie out on DVD or even Video. I have it on VHS and DVD and the DVD has a little more, very little, like a minute of two. I just wish I could see the full version, just once. PLEASE RELEASE THE FULL MOVIE!!!!

Summary: You will not understand this movie without FIRST reading it.
Review: This movie, while beautiful and enjoyable, will be almost impossible to watch if you have not watched Dune. I thought it was wonderful and enjoyed it immensely. Dune fans will love it. I had to watch this movie for the first time in '96 from a rented movie. The tape was in horrible condition, this DVD really brings out the beautiful sets and does a decent job with the sound. It is enjoyable but watch the movie with a friend who can explain it.

Summary: It's Long, it's Confusing, it's Fantastic... it's Dune.
Review: Dune is a movie that some people love, some people can't stand it, most are just sort of confused... but a lot of people are fanatical about it. It's a long movie (and every few years it seems that a new even longer version is released), and while there's plenty of action, it's main appeal is in the form of it's rich visualization and characters. It's a highly visual movie, using unobtrusive special effects combined with some of the most badass scenery I've ever seen in a movie. If you've read the book, then keep in mind that this movie is just an adaptation - an improvement if you ask me. The original book harped on about a few subjects and was generally boring and superficial beyond that. The movie has a lot more depth - it doesn't go into all the environmental aspects that the author did, but the characters are much more real than they were in the book, and the plot is a little more sensical than before.Chances are, if you're looking this up, you've seen the movie. If you've seen it and are still reading this, then you probably already know you want it. The dvd version doesn't seem to have anything particularly improved to offer over most of the vhs versions, lacking some of the sound and detail of the laserdisk enhanced editions - but it's no worse than vhs... so if you want it on dvd go for it.

Summary: A step short of wonderful
Review: Dune, as a novel, is incredible. To make the transition to a movie would be difficult, if not impossible. David Lynch made an excellent attempt, and while the version sold commercially is unfortunately difficult to follow for the Dune Novice, the uncut version is fantastic(if you have the time!) My major complaint is the lack of attention to Liet-Kynes and the Fremen society, which is the center of Dune. Too much assumption is made by Lynch. If you're interested in Dune, read the book. The movie is a nice addition, but is also completely unnecessary. :) Just enjoy the weirdness of it. What a story. I hear it's being remade, based exclusively on the novel, so we may yet gain further visual insight into Mr. Herbert's ecological epoch.

Summary: This movie is an insult to the image portrayed by the book.
Review: This movie is an insult to the image portrayed by Frank Herbert in his Dune books. Not only does it ignore some of the most important aspects which Frank Herbert included in his books, but it is also neglegent in that it does not show any real cinematic quality. The internal monologes are long and often incomprehensible unless the viewer has read the book version, and even then there is confusion in that the movie does not corespond with the book in many aspects.

Summary: Excellent movie, just not on DVD
Review: I really, really liked the "full version" of Dune that was released on TV (with the new prologue). I was bitterly disappointed to find that none of the new footage appeared on this release, however; several *critical* scenes that appeared on TV are now missing. Although a couple new scenes do appear, they are minor compared to the deletions. I would say this release is for collectors only.
