Summary: "His Superpower comes from his boundless rage..."
Review: The HULK was surprisingly good. Much like X-Men and Spider-man, fans went into it cringing with fear they would be disappointed.
It wasn't perfect, but here is the formula for why I gave it 5 stars;
You have to start with 5 because it's the HULK!
Now subtract 1 star because of headache inducing split screen effects. I know they were trying to give it a comic book paneled feel, but the human eye can only keep track of so much. And half the time it was just unneccessary angles of the exact same scene.
Subtract one more star for overuse of the green filter. We know he's the Hulk, so bathing everything in nausiating green tones really serves no purpose.
Now, put one star back on for an absolutely incredible script. Everyone's biggest fear was that the plot would be little more than "HULK SMASH!!" But director Ang Lee actually put a greek tragedy spin on the story. Excellent!!
And finally, I have to give one more star for Jennifer Connelly. I love this woman. I want to write her a letter and personally thank her for not being the stereotypical damsel in distress and screaming her bloody head off through the entire movie!! (Unlike, say, Kim Bassinger?) But at the same time, she didn't come off as wooden at all. She was absolutely perfect!!!
So 5-1-1+1+1=5 stars
Oh, and bear in mind this is an extremely suspensful and at times violent movie. Just because your 5 year old likes the Hulk and wears his pajamas, doesn't mean he should see this movie. Please folks, bear the PG-13 rating in mind. I saw some pretty traumatized toddlers leave the theater.

Summary: Crouching Hulk Hidden Sensibility
Review: 3 1/2Quite possibly the most ambitious of the Marvel Comic book films Ang Lee takes his shot at making movie history by adapting yet another wildly popular comic icon and putting him on the big screen in the larger than life event movie of the summer. The Hulk is one of the more complicated Marvel Characters. Like many of them his power is a curse and takes much more strength and inner will to control and conquer. You won't see Bruce Banner jumping from building to building enjoying his powers ala Spiderman and you definetly won't see him cracking jokes as his alter ego (ala Daredevil). One can immedietley tell their is a master film maker at work behind the scenes. With every shot a complex use of frames gives us those classic comic book shots that not only elevate the emotional tension of certain scenes but also allows the viewer to see what is going on in the other "panels" of the film. This technique grows a tad tiresome but it is not used in every scene which gives your eyes a few minutes to rest. The acting is decent, I was surprised to see such bland performances from such promising young actors like Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly. Nick Nolte being the most mature of all the actors does a good job but is almost laughable as he is forced to wear the "crazy man" get up of a beard and messed up salt and pepper hair. Ang stressed he did not want it to feel comic booky yet he dresses up his characters in very comic book cliche ways. These things aside, their are many good emotional moments and a few bland ones. They never flesh out the relationship between Bruce and Betty, all you know is they had a past relationship and thats it. When Betty says she loves bruce at the end, it's completly unbelievable. The acting is efficient enough to get you through the drama until the eye widening Hulk Smash scenes. The Hulk is one of ILMs finest creations, limited only by the fact that he is so grand that you just know he can NEVER be truly real in your mind. His face has a huge range of emotion and they are done to an extreme precision such as when he looks at his father with a sober disbelief of what he has done to him. In many ways he is the best actor in the film. The action scenes are wonderfully over the top and will satisfy even the most picky viewer who thinks they have seen it all when it comes to action on the big screen. Other noteworthy mentions is the excellent score by Danny Elfman who makes up for the past couple of scores that he seemed to merely phone in. He seems to have returned to form although his hay day appears to be over in a general sense. The film is on an emotionally different plane than X2 or Spiderman, it is not better than those films but exists as an over-ambitious but still amazing piece of film making by a Director who knows how to control the emotional element in his films. It's a great psychological piece on anger and hiding the beast within. When you see Hulk's face as he soars in the air, almost at peace in the sky as he hovers for those brief moments, we understand that the Hulk is not just a killing machine, he is a person who must deal with his personal demons, just like everyone of us.

Summary: I WAS WRONG.
Review: I WAS EXCITED TO HEAR ABOUT A HULK MOVIE COMING OUT, WHAT WITH SO MANY MOVIES BASED ON COMICS BEING RELEASED AND DONE RIGHT THESE DAYS. I HOPED THE HULK WOULD BE HANDLED RIGHT. THEN I SAW THE PREVIEWS AND I REALIZED WE HAD TROUBLE. BIG, HULKING, GREEN CGI TROUBLE. THEN I SAID MAYBE THE STORY AND ACTING WOULD LIFT IT ABOVE THE CARTOONISH (PLAY STATION:ONE) STYLE F/X. I'M SORRY TO SAY, I WAS WRONG. I WANTED TO LIKE THIS MOVIE AND MAYBE IN ANOTHER TIME, LONG AGO, ABOUT 30 YRS. BACK I WOULD HAVE. NOW, I'M TOO GROWN UP AND THIS IS TOO HOKEY. MAYBE THE BIG GREEN GUY WILL BE BETTER TREATED ON HIS NEXT BIG SCREEN ADVENTURE. HERE'S A FEW THINGS I WOULD RECOMMEND BEFORE TRYING IT AGAIN: 1) NEW DIRECTOR. 2) NEW F/X TEAM. 3) WHOLE NEW CAST. THAT SHOULD JUST ABOUT FIX ALL THAT WENT WRONG WITH THIS ONE, BEFORE THEY MAKE A SEQUEL.

Summary: Best FILM that happens to be based on a comicbook
Review: Ang Lee has done it again. He's a taken a very distinctive genre and recreated it in his own way while keeping the enduring and beloved essence intact. HULK is not the best superhero movie ever. That title belongs to X2. But that's because HULK is NOT a superhero movie. This is a greek tragedy/intense psychodrama/adrenalin rush all rolled into one. This is the first comicbook movie that, when it shows us psychological drama or emotional trauma, it's serious and heavy without being cliched or pretentious. Ang Lee uses symbolism, metaphors, and allusions to connect the themes of repression, identity, and consciousness. The use of comicbook-like-panels editing is amazing and is going to be very distinctive of HULK from now on. The acting by all parties is exemplary especially the title character himself, the Hulk, who looks amazing and somehow totally believable. Now that I've mentioned all the bits about the psychological and dramatic depth of the movie, you might be saying, well, it's a Hulk movie! How about some HULK SMASH! Well, when the Hulk shows up, you get everything you could possibly want from a Hulk movie. What I really loved about the movie was Hulk's fighting style. This is what the strongest creature that ever walked the planet would fight like! Raw, messy, and brutal. Anything he can grab, he can break. Most action movies go for a sanitized fight choreography ala Matrix Reloaded which was pretty much punch-kick-block-jump-REPEAT in every single fight. X2 had Wolverine/Deathstrike which was bloodier but still pretty theatrical. However, Hulk fighting was anything but pretty. Heck, at times it seemed like the movie should have gotten an R-rating and that's only because we associate cheesy martial arts with fighting nowadays when it comes to action movies. The Hulk taking on the military was also awesome. Did not look choreographed or monotonous at all. The Hulk also had very realistic way of behaving when it came to approaching his enemies and what not. The attitude and savagery was displayed not only in his actions but also in his movements, his facial expressions, and the way he carried himself. Great stuff!

Summary: A Disaster for the most part
Review: I am not familiar with the Incredible Hulk comic book series, so I cannot tell you whether the film is heavily based on the comic book or not. My guess would be if it was based on the comic, it would have been based on more than one because this is one of the most long and drawn out movies I've subjected myself to sitting through. In addition to being long, the movie was also quite boring. I expected to be at the edge of my seat throughout the movie, but I often found myself dosing off when the wooden dialouge was taking place. This movie was very hyped for the reason that the CGI would be amazing. WILL THERE EVER BE A LIMIT INTO HOW MUCH CGI IS INSERTED INTO A MOVIE? I can understand that creating a character like the Hulk is a very difficult thing to do, but please, I came to watch a movie, not a cartoon. The Hulk almost looks like one of the cartoon characters in "Space Jam" when placed in the real world throughout the movie. It's almost like the crew was striving for this kind of effect. Please, CGI has already almost nearly butchered Star Wars, and now it is destroying other movies as well. Now, in regards to the actual movie, most of it was really a bore. The plot was almost like that of every other "superhero" movie they've come out with these days. Some terrible happens to the hero as a child that involves the death of one or more of his parents and then he finds a special was to avenge what happened. Granted, this varies a little bit with each movie, but it's still basically the same plot. The movie's plot was very tedious, and it took a long time to play out. The fight scenes were at times, very good, but the rest of the movie was so boring that by the time the fight scenes occured I was already bored and didn't feel very good about them regardless. The movie was just one thing after another and after awhile I was just wanting it to end. The movie wasn't ALL bad, though. Like I said, the fight scenes were good, and CGI used to create the killer dogs was pretty awesome. Like I said, there is an overkill of CGI in the movie, but in times it works well. Also, the opening credits scenes were done very well. They were probably the most interesting part of the movie. The acting was not bad at all, the actors did what they could with the boring dialouge. The good does not outweigh the bad though, thus this was an overall bad movie. I gave it an extra star for the things mentioned above. It definately does not deserve a better than average rating, though. These Marvel superhero movies are getting worse every time. Spiderman was brilliant, DareDevil was okay, and this movie was deinfately under par. Hopefully, if the Punisher movie turns out even worse than this, Marvel will just stop making movies all together.

Summary: Initially excited... until I saw the trailer
Review: I've loved the Incredible Hulk since my childhood. I read the comics, but mostly, I loved the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno combination in the movies and the TV series. It's what I got used to. I was very excited when I heard about the new Hulk movie. I was excited but then was taken back a little when I heard that the Hulk would be animated. After I saw the trailer for the movie and saw how ridiculous the animated Hulk looked, I grew even further disappointed. I still wanted to see the movie, however, because like I said, I'm a big fan. Well, then I saw the movie. Horrendous. They paid far too much attention to the special effects and the animation and totally forgot that the movie is supposed to be entertaining and somewhat realistic. First of all, the Hulk was the size of King Kong. Only difference was he was green. This movie was supposed to be based on the comic book, but the original Hulk comics never had the Hulk standing 25 feet tall. Secondly, the animated Hulks' movements were so awkward and fake looking that I couldn't even place a proper image in my mind. All I kept thinking about was how stupid it looked and I totally lost focus of the film itself. I don't know why they wanted to go the animated route. I suppose Hollywood thinks special effects are more important than a storyline these days. Not true in the least. This movie was a disgrace.

Summary: Coming from a NonFan of the Comic
Review: Predictable. Longer than it should have been. Occasionally bogus CGI. And that's all that I found wrong with Ang Lee's Hulk. The story, the nonbogus CGI, and the action sequences were greatly cinematic. I found it predictable because there was nothing new to be seen. I even thought of certain plot points a few seconds before they happened. To defend the movie, this only happened a few times. The remainder of the story carried the movie along well, and was great. I highly enjoyed the fact that there was a lot of drama and more of a psychological bend to the story. The CGI, and there was a ton of it, occasionally came off as bogus, but it was minimal. The first time the Hulk appeared is when it struck me as bogus, but as the movie went on, the Hulk began to look more and more real. Especially the water scenes and when he was running. I occasionally found the running time exasperating. I asked myself once "There's more?" only because although I expected there to be a closure with .. father, I didn't expect the ending that I got. The ending was quite out there too. What really brought me along the movie was the acting. Eric Bana was excellent for the part. Prior to Hulk, I'd actually never heard of him. As Bruce, he hit every emotional note and carried the character well. Jennifer Connelly was beautiful here. Her acting - as always - was right on. The shots where she stared intensely at Bruce, and the camera lingered on her were incredible. Nick Nolte pulled off homicidal very well. He's ... always scared me personally. And Sam Ross's chemistry with Connelly made him a bit more of a character than he could have been. Meaning, seeing how he portrayed the love for his daughter, it made me like him a bit even though he knew he was doing what was best. Ang Lee did an amazing job with an amazing cast. Since Hulk resides in the comic-to-film genre, I can say that even though it's not better than the X-Men series, it was a few steps up from Spiderman. I'd place it between Daredevil and Spiderman.

Summary: Impressive but, WAY too long...
Review: Jennifer Connelly is a beautiful woman. But they must have set a record for the number of close-ups. The scenes between the two main characters were basically a full close-up of HER face as she said her line then a full close-up of HIS face as he said his line and then back to her, back to him.... After 20 minutes of that, I was yawning in spite of the intense acting. The action scenes were excellent but everything in between the action scenes moved soooo slow. The Hulk scene's were great, the best, in spite of the "cartoon" Hulk. The movie overall was good, it was just too long and too slow. The last 15 minutes however, were excellent!!

Summary: This movie is crazy.
Review: I was never into comic books, but with the slew of comic book hero movies coming out, I may just start reading them. I can't believe how realistic and how much personality and background goes into these characters. The Hulk was bloody amazing. The special effects for the Hulk were great, you can see the bullets bounce off of his sides, and the sheer anger and immense destruction literally radiates off of the screen as you're watching it. You can feel Bruce Banner's pain through every segment of the movie. There are no words that can describe this movie... you have to see it for yourself.

Summary: THE ABSOLUTE WORST MOVIE OF 2003!
Review: This movie was absolutely horrible. It was like Daredevil, where they didn't know what to do with the movie, but a lot worse. The script was all around the place and the special effects were as good as nothing. They should have waited a couple of years so that the special effects could have been more realistics. The Hulk looked like they had drawn a picture of him and put it in the movie. I know this is suppost to be a comic book movie, but they should have tried to make him more realistic. If you really wanted to go see a great comic book movie just go see Spider-man or X-Men...
