Review: Okay you Godzilla haters. This is a great movie so get the gum out of your ears and listen. This movie has got everything! I repeat, EVERYTHING! The monsters look terrific! And unlike the Godzilla movies that are crap, the plot flows nicely. Okay, so mabye the effects aren`t always great but who really cares? Bad effects make this movie good for a change. My favorite part is when Godzilla jumps into the air and body slams Megaguirus who has his stinger stuck in the ground. Then they fall into the remains of a building. The only thing that prevents this movie from 5 stars is that the ending is very upsetting. The new man-made black hole gun swallows Godzilla. But I think that deep down inside that I and the movie characters reliezed that Godzilla either escaped or avoided the black hole. I think this movie was very well done. Too bad the ending could have been done a bit better...

Summary: Not as good as it sounds
Review: For a modern Godzilla movie, the animation is very dissapointing. After seing Gamera 3 I was eager to see what Godzilla had to offer for 2000. Sadly it does not deliver.

The special effects are bad and the fight scenes are very slow.
This movie looks like it was made in the 70's.

You want real Monster action? Try Gamera 3 or Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah!

Summary: Great Godzilla
Review: Godzilla just keeps getting better and this offering is very good. Creating a black hole in hopes of getting rid of Godzilla, scientists instead mutate a dragonfly which in turn lays eggs and the queen of these mutants grows huge due to radioactive energy aquired from Godzilla, and of course a giant monster battle insues. Great special effects and a good sci-fi story makes this one an instant classic.

Summary: All new menace 'bugs' Godzilla and Japan.
Review: Godzilla returns! For the very first time, yet again! In what is now a standard trend, Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus plays as a direct sequel to the first Godzilla movie and ignores the 20+ movies that were made in between. Perhaps it is for the best, yet it is a bit strange seeing the Godzilla 2000 suit spliced into footage of the first Godzilla movie so the look of the monster can be consistent. As was the case with Godzilla 2000, the King of the Monsters shows up to trash Japan's nuclear power plants and anything else that is not an ecology friendly power source. When a power crisis looms, a new method of creating energy is made and...guess who comes to crash the party? The military team in charge of fighting the Big G and a group of scientists come up with an interesting weapon...a black hole gun that will capture Godzilla for all eternity. Too bad that the first test of the weapon unleashes an insectile threat every bit as dangerous as the mutant dinosaur itself! The monsters are nice to look at and the effects range from good to the kind that are always used to mock the genre by its detractors (i.e. you can clearly see the wires holding up one of Megaguirus's early forms as it flies over head). Nonetheless, this entry is fun to see and has the kind of city smashing fans adore. Highly recommended.

Summary: Great DVD-It's Only Competition is GMK
Review: Finally, a legal region 1 Godzilla dvd release with the original Japanese soundtrack (the same applies to "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack"). This has been a long time coming: two Godzilla releases with Japanese language soundtrack, improved special effects, and new story lines. This film is a far cry from campy Godzilla films past. The only way to improve on these movies, would have been to include true subtitles rather than "dubtitles". This means that the subtitles are based on the English language dubbing instead of the true Japanese language translation. The dubbing, however, is improved over previous releases, where it more correlates to mouth motion of the actors than in G-films of the past. True subtitles would still be preferable for those of us who enjoy the true Japanese language version. In spite of this, Sony-TriStar deserves three cheers for their first attempts at dual-language track Godzilla dvds. Let's hope to see true subtitles for "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla" on March 23rd. Other than that, this is pure entertainment for any Godzilla or scifi fan. A double delight to have these two releases on the same day. If you like Godzilla, this is a "must-see". -Michael Ditkowsky

Summary: One of the Best US-Released Godzilla DVDs
Review: This review applies to both of the Columbia-Tristar releases of "Godzilla vs. Megaguirus" and "Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack". I may not have a fancy 5.1 home theater or widescreen tv, but I'll review this to the best of my ability. The first thing you're obviously going to notice about the DVDs are the covers. The box art has a bit to be desired, and it appears they were fashioned from the poster art. The back covers even use the little 'logos' you find on most US-released Godzilla merchandise that correspond with each kaiju. The dvds themselves have basic, still menu screens; the main screens are mostly just the cover art, flipped over. The only extras offered are a few trailers for various Columbia-Tristar movies, including the 1998 'Godzilla'. There are 28 chapter selections for each dvd. Now for the good stuff: The films are in 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen, and though I do not have such a tv to take advantage of this feature, the picture still seemed excellent, despite a few areas with a bit of speckles on the film itself. The audio is Dolby Digital 5.1, with both Japanese and English audio (the default seems to be Japanese). It sounds excellent, even if you don't have a 5.1 system. This also marks the first-ever stateside release of a Godzilla DVD with Japanese audio! These are the entire, uncut versions, unlike the Sci-Fi channel airings, although they do have the awful (in my opinion) superimposed titles at the first (it only really looks bad in GMK). The earlier releases were better when it came to the title screens; the movies' titles were captioned at the bottom of the screen. The end credits are in English but are all there, unlike the previous Tristar releases, where pretty much the entire credit sequence was replaced by a bit of copyright info. Subtitles are both English and French. The English subtitles tend to say exactly what is being said in the dub, but have differences in some areas. I'll just assume they ARE mostly based on the original Japanese, though. Also worthy of noting are the silver "50th Anniversary Of Godzilla" stickers on the dvd wrappers, and the backs of the Scene Selection inserts advertise all of their Godzilla dvd releases, past and present. Overall, I give these dvds a big thumbs up, despite the lack of any real extras. They were worth the wait. Our local Blockbuster Video will be recieving the movies for rental, lets hope the semi-snazzy box art will warrant lots of rentals from curious customers. 'Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla', which is being released to DVD in March, boasts the same specs as these discs, so hopefully it will be of the same quality, or possibly even better. I've seen the cover though, and it looks much better. A great beginning to the American celebration of Godzilla's 50th anniversary!

Summary: A decent G flick
Review: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is a very entertaining Godzilla movie that is a follow-up to the 1999 hit 'Godzilla 2000'. Although the Godzilla design is the same, this movie is actually not a direct sequel to Godzilla 2000. It doesn't even seem to take place in the same sequence of events, effectively making it an 'Alternate Universe' storyline.

Too bad, since I kind of liked the characters from Godzilla 2000. But Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is full of the same stuff you would expect from your Godzilla movies: super cheesy plot and dialogue, poor dubbing and translation, and a slew of special effects thrown in with a colossal monster fight toward the end of the flick.

Like Godzilla 2000 before it, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus seems to have had a significant budget to work with. There are lots of good special effects and computer animation thrown in, but in terms of the puppetry, this movie is pretty bad. In fact, it seems that the effects crew was downright lazy when working with Megaguirus. They seemed to make no effort to hide the strings that Megaguirus flew on...at least in previous movies they tried hard to hide the strings, but this movie's effects were just painful to look at. I suppose its all part of the charm though, since this new batch of Godzilla movies in recent years has been excellent.

Overall this is a good Godzilla flick...it has everything you'd come to expect from a Godzilla film. As far as great Godzilla movies go, I'd say Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghirdora Giant Monsters All Out Attack is the best one in years, probably since Godzilla 1985. This movie is at least worth watching if you're a Godzilla fan though, and there's nothign really wrong with it. It should be good enough to tide us over until the new Godzilla vs. Mecha-Godzilla movies come out in a few years.
