Summary: "Like most things, I am nothing..."
Review: I like this movie more every time I watch it; every frame is beautiful. CTHD has something for everyone. That said, it is important not to lump the film into any particular genre, in order that it might really be appreciated. If you are just wanting to see Kung Fu, this movie probably isn't for you. Similarly, if you are counting on the love story to carry the picture, you may also be let down. To be clear, both the action and love story are wonderful and provide a clever contrast as the action is so exaggerated and the love story so subdued, but neither alone comprise the meaning of the story.I won't spoil that for you if you haven't seen it. Words really cannot describe how much I love this movie. The cinematography is breathtaking and the score by Yo-yo Ma is perfectly thematic. Occasionally a movie comes along that is able to make you view your whole life in a new way. Crouching Tiger was one of these movies for me.

Summary: Good story and a linguistic challenge
Review: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The themes are format are not exceptional among Chinese films. Those who are not accustomed to watching these kinds of stories may be more impressed with the novelty of finally seeing it done. However, although it was not that new a thing for me, it was good in itself and worth frequent revisits. If you need to rely on English, here's something interesting. The subtitles are fairly modern colloquial English. But if you listen to the dubbed-in English soundtrack, the style is something like late Victorian: about 100 years old. Why this difference, I don't know. But I guess it does help to understand the story by getting it two different ways-- as well as in Mandarin Chinese if you have the capability of understanding. One thing I can't figure out about the translation. Michelle Yeoh's character is called "Jen" in the subtitles. But in Mandarin she is constantly referred to as "Xiao Long" (Hsiao Lung), which means "Little Dragon." That relates better to the title than "Jen" does. This film can be enjoyed at a variety of levels. You can do all the linguistic analyzing like I did, and more. Or you can just enjoy the action and the way they do the effects of people flying through the air. Or you can look for historical accuracy if you are a scholar in this area. Because of plot complexity and a time sequence that jumps around a little, you probably need to watch it several times to really grasp what is happening.

Review: I watched this movie with a nagging feeling of disappointment. This isn't the best movie in the kung-fu genre, nowhere near the best movie of 2000 and I strongly doubt that it's even the best foreign movie of 2000. It makes you wonder whether or not this film would have gotten the notoriety it received had it not the special effects budget and the established Chinese-Hollywood actors at it's helm. That said, visually this film is quite stunning, but cinematography can't completely glaze over a thin, meandering plot and flimsy script. You have to also wonder how many reviewers who gave this 5 stars skip past the reams of dialogue and straight to the spectacular fight sequences. Hmm...

Summary: 6 enthusiastic stars- girl power
Review: This is my favorite DVD. Who said women cant fight. Who said women arent tought. I love the women in this film because they fight with style. And yet, if we put the martial arts aside, I love this movie because of its visual artistry. Each time I watch this film on DVD, I am mesmerized by the flying sequences, the sword fight dances and ofcourse the beautiful costumes. I watch it in the original chinese with subtitles and in english and both are good. The english is very funny while the chinese seems to be more clear and literal.

Review: The fighting, the acting, the story, everything with this movie rocks. It was probably the closest to being the best of 2000, but Gladiator takes that crown. This is a must own DVD like the Matrix and Gladiator.

Review: Suspend disbelief (ya, I had trouble with the "flying" scenes too) and enjoy this movie for it's near-perfect blend of romance, action, humor, and tragedy. No other movie comes so close to having it all.

Summary: Martial Arts for the 21st century
Review: I am a fan of Martial Arts and a follower of Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-Fat. I have seen all of their movies. Although this is not a typical Martial Arts movie, it does have the typical action sequences and cheesy plot. What sets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon apart from the rest is the focus on female roles with numerous (incredibly choreographed) fight scenes as well as the obvious computer enhanced activity. Sure, The Matrix was the originator of this type of camera movement, but Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon does a much better job. The beauty of this movie is even without the enhanced features, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would still be an incredible Martial Arts movie. I cannot say the same for The Matrix. That movie was just terrible and without the added camera techniques, I guarantee the movie would've made the dumpster. The sad part is everyone has now begun to copy this technique and I have even seen it in music videos! Blah! Well, one neat thing, the Mt. Dew commerical that aired with a twist on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was great! Hope you get a chance to see it.

Review: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is simply a masterpiece. If you liked Lord of the Rings, Starwars, Matrix or any "Greek Drama" type of warriors story, you will surely love this one.
