Summary: Wonderful looks
Review: This movie was mutiliated in it's original release. This DVD makes it justice - it looks wonderful, the story and editing make sence, the acting is also great. For fans of Ridley or this movie - this is a must. For fans of Tom Cruize - this is also a must. Movie addicts should see both versions and see what bad editing can do to a movie. Other viewers should defenitely see it if they can bear fantasies - it's well worth for the wonderful images.

P.S. Trekies - note the Dr. from Voyager plays a really surprising role!!

Review: I've waited a long time for this dvd to be released and it was well worth the wait!!! Just a totally awesome movie made better by the directors edition of the movie.

Summary: Love the Movie, Hate the DVD
Review: One of the greatest Fantasy movies ever made absolutely ruined by the director's cut! The alternate ending makes the first disk (Director's Cut) totally unwatchable. It completely ruined the entire movie for me. I'd say the DVD is worth buying just to have this classic on DVD, but I found out that the Dolby Digital/DTS sound track is only on the first disk! I buy DVD's because of the superior sound and this version does not deliver it. The first disk and the price needs to drop to make this DVD worthwhile.

Summary: What could have been
Review: The director's cut really shows how well the movie could have played out in the original release. The U.S. release has always been a favorite of mine mainly due to its visual effects and its ability to pull the viewer into the film. The plot was always a little jumpy. The only way to get the movie is to allow yourself to be drawn into the visualization. Most people today have a hard time doing that. Therfore, they don't get it.
With the director's cut, the plot seems to flow much better. I am split on the musical score. I think the Tangerine Dreams soundtrack works real well for the forest scenes and the dancing gown, and the Jerry Goldsmith score works well for the background tempo and ending sequence. I think a molding of the the two versions would have been something special. To me, they both are incredible movies that I'll always have on my top ten list.

Summary: Great release of a classic
Review: It's always been a bit campy, but then what fantasy isn't. It is still fun, Tim Curry's "Dark" is still one of my favorite villians of all time (next to Darth Vader, Hannible Lector), and being able to see the director's was great( seeing it on TV and then on video I always was waiting for seens that I'd seen before, but weren't. The director's cut had them all and more).

Summary: Darkness is here!!!
Review: Awesome!!!

I saw this movie when I was a kid, and loved it! Now that I saw the director's cut version, I remember why I liked Legend. It has beautiful landscapes and scenary, very much like in fairie tales. It's like a mixture of The Lord of the rings with Dragonlance and the Arthurian legends. It has unicorns, goblins, witches, dwarves, elves, fairies, and magic stuff. Tom Cruise did a good job (not his best), and Darkness (Tim Curry) was incredible!!! That guy was terrifying!!!

Good job, Ridley Scott. Five stars are not enough for you on this one!

Summary: Enchanting
Review: I have always loved this movie since I first saw it in the 80's. This DVD is great, although I wish it had more on Tom Cruise in the interviews. The theatrical release continues to be my favorite. I can't get through the Director's Cut without laughing every other scene. First of all, Lily's singing gets irritating...and the melody isn't even attractive. Then there's Jack, who has even cheesi-er parts that I'm GLAD they removed from the theatrical release (ex. jumping and flipping in the air, watching him eat a cookie..etc). The music is *The Sound Of Music* style...and i prefer the enchanting fairy-like sound of Tangerine Dream's music on the theatrical release. It seems to fit more. Princess Lily seems more of a spoiled little girl in the Director's Cut. Jack begs her not to touch the unicorns, but she turns and looks at him as though to say "Just try and stop me"....which angers me. Darkness was very well done by Tim...and the fairies and other little creatures are fun to watch. I just prefer the Theatrical Release. I believe it's a better experience and doesn't drag out so much. Buy the DVD for the sharp picture and extra features.

Summary: Excellent Fantasy for those with a Brain!
Review: This is a beautiful fantasy film. I remember when I first saw this movie and it really did take me to another place for a couple of hours. The sets and costumes are wonderful and a young Tom Cruise is just as appealing then as he is now. Tim Curry is brilliant as the evil horned demon and quite appealing to boot! Obviously if you like 'show's' like Dragon Ball Z, this movie might be a bit complicated for you, but for everyone else it is a valuable DVD for you collection. The extras are fantastic!

Summary: Good Movie, Excellent DVD.
Review: The first couple of times I saw "Legend", I didn't really like it. The story felt sooo contrived, the acting by Tom Cruise and Mia Sara wasn't all that great....it seemed like a waste of excellent make-up and surrounding. The only things I really liked were: 1)The score by Tangerine Dream, which I thought was very mystical and enchanting, and 2) The preformance of Tim Curry, who shines as the Lord of Darkness, and to me is the best personification of the Devil/pure evil ever captured on film (except for the voice of Mercedes McCambridge in "The Exorcist, but you can't really see him, so that doesn't count).

Then I heard about the new "Ultimate Edition" that just came out, and that the new Director's Cut featured on the first disc surpassed the U.S. release greatly. I got intensely curious, and thought I'd check it out and buy it. Well, it turns out the reviews were right; the Director's Cut IS better. The story isn't contrived at all now (since it adds on about twenty minutes)! And the score by Jerry Goldsmith, thought definitely not among his best work, is more along the line of traditional fairy tale scores...and best of all, it removes the stupid rock song at the end! JOY TO THAT!! Unfortuanately, the acting doesn'y improve much, but it does give the characters of Jack and Lily much more depth, and spent more time focussing on their love relationship (which helped the movie out A LOT). Overall, a vast improvement over the U.S. release.

The Ultimate Edition DVD is verrrry nice, and includes an awesome case, as well. The making-of documentary is interesting enough, though it would've been really nice to see Tom Cruise in their, too. Also, before I saw the making-of docmentary, I felt the whole plot of Legend seemed too cliche...but since director Ridley Scott explains quite thoroughly that that's what he was going for (a traditional fairy tale story), I look at the movie much more differently now. The menus are really cool. The lost scenes are fairly interesting, though one can see why they were taken out (especially the "Fairy Dance" sequence, which seemd to silly and stratched too far away from the story).

Conclusion: A very worthy buy for fantasy fans, if only just to see the outstanding preformance of Tim Curry.
