Summary: Great movie, not so great collector's set
Review: The regular extended edition DVD comes with one free ticket to the upcoming Two Towers - LOTR Part 2. My collector's set did not. The National Geographic disc included with this set is also disappointing - not awful, just not that interesting. The best part of the set is the box, which is specially designed by Alan Lee whose illustrations grace some editions of the LOTR books. The included statues are nice, but hardly worth the price of the set. I'd suggest sticking with the regular extended edition DVD. The movie itself is amazing as is the transfer.

Summary: Like it Should Have Been the First Time
Review: I was completely awestruck the first time I saw Lord of the Rings in the theater. This was the fantasy movie that I had always dreamed of seeing. I have been a fantasy fan all my life but strangely enough I had never read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy until I was inspired by the movie. I was overawed at the complexity and depth to this book and could not believe that I had not read this earlier in my life. Now that I have seen this extended edition I cannot believe that they did not release this version the first time. I thought that they did a wonderful job on the film before I saw this edition and now the first one seems like a second rate show[] This is how the all the other movies should be done and I sincerely hope that they are. If you love Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings this is a must have.

Summary: 2 disc split = 2 star blunder
Review: The single most noticable aspect of this DVD set is that the extended version of the Fellowship of the Ring is split across two DVDs. Both DVD's include 4 commentary tracks. I believe that the film merits placement upon a single disc to allow full viewer immersion into the complex story, and am certain that one disc would have sufficed had the 4 commentaries not been included. While many may find the commentaries of interest for one viewing, the movie ultimately can be judged on its own. The two disc format detracts greatly from the experience of the movie and speaks poorly upon the producer's judgement.As for the extended version of the film itself, it does make for a far superior version of an already brilliantly cast, well-directed adaptation of Tolkien's work. Hobbits are revealed in fuller colors, revealing greater understanding of Tolkien's love of the pastoral, simple life. The distrust between elves and dwarves, a clear commentary by Tolkien upon the ills of racism, is given more depth, and the members of the Fellowship are all allowed more character development. There were a few chronological and narrative misteps in the original film which were not corrected, and diminish its cohesiveness against the novel. Nevertheless, the movie remains an incredible work, and Mr. Jackson, the remarkable cast, and amazing crew all deserve the highest accolades. The audience, however, deserves this film on a single DVD, and I recommend neophytes to Tolkien's work go and read the books. Their depth is simply unbelievable, and there will never be a substitute for them,

Summary: Absolutely The Best!
Review: I just watched the DVD today after buying it and I must say it is like watching a new Lord of the Rings all over again. With the new scenes streams in with the movie it flowed so well and was just as enjoyable as when I saw it in theaters. This DVD is packed with a bunch of commentaries and interviews and behind the scenes and the making of stuff I don't know when I'll finish it! I absolutely recommend it for the price, (Money), and you get a free movie ticket to see the new Lord of the Rings coming out on December the 18th!

Summary: Eh. The most palatable way of downing this epic...
Review: This movie's okay. I've never understood the appeal of Tolkein. He wrote a great story (The Hobbit) and then thought it would be better if he magnified it's length and eliminated it's humor. I prefer the film to the book (uncommon for me) I can't believe they're going to stretch this DVD out into another release and make it even longer! I've got a suggestion, how about cutting it down to an hour and a half for those of us who didn't like it in the first place? Is there a Mr. Magoo version of this? That would be even better! But would Magoo play Frodo or Gandalf?

Review: This is the Greatest DVD I've bought. The documentary on the making of the film is so thorough, that I felt like I was there during the entire pre-production and filming of the movie. I recommend this to true fans of the movie.

Summary: More Of The Ring
Review: The Fellowship of the Ring is the first part of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings is a masterful piece of movie entertainment. Director Peter Jackson has done an amazing job of transferring one of the most beloved pieces of 20th century literature to the silver screen. Although certain sacrifices are made in the transition, the real heart and soul of the book is evident. Utilizing the natural beauty of New Zealand and state of the art special effects, Mr. Jackson brings Middle Earth to full life. The film has tremendous visuals and the feel of a classic Hollywood epic. The cast is first rate led by Sir Ian McKellan who is magnificent as Gandalf. Elijah Wood gives his best performance to date as the central character in the film, Frodo Baggins and Viggo Mortensen is cool and steely as Strider. Sean Bean as the doomed Boromir and Orlando Bloom as the heroic elf Legolas give strong support as does Sean Astin as Frodo's sidekick Samwise Gamgee. Christopher Lee adds yet another evil part to his resume and he is perfect as the corrupt wizard Saruman. Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler and Ian Holm have small but effective roles. There is the appropriate amount of suspense and tension in the film as the Fellowship struggle to destroy the ring. The only drawback to the film is that knowing it is only the first part of a trilogy, it really doesn't end. You don't have the usual resolution of the plot, but the film's excellence will leave you heavily anticipating part two. This version is Mr. Jackson's director's cut and it is a marvelous extension of the film. The extended version helps flesh out the characters and gives more details on the lives of the hobbits, Strider and the forming of the Fellowship of the Ring. The new version is extremely long, so it is obvious why it was trimmed down for its theatrical release, but if you already own that version of the DVD, this version is worth the money. It is superior to the original and that's saying quite a bit as the original is tremendous.

Review: This is, if not, the best DVD ever, with so many special features it will make your head spin. The movie is better with the 30 minutes of extra footage, and it goes more along with the book, for you die-hard fans.... There is no better deal out there. Definitley a must own DVD.

Review: Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings is an awesome movie! This movie shows God's love. It is also popular without being sexually immoral! This movie is about Frodo Baggins, a young hobbit, who is intrusted to destroy the ring with all the power. This movie shows that even the smallest can make all the difference. An awesome movie! I'd SO recommend it!

Review: The Lord Of The Rings : The Fellowship Of The Ring is the best movie ever! The graphics were awsome , the story line was well done , and the director , and his co-workers , did a very good job at making the wonderful author J.R.R. Tolkiens Middle-earth come to life. The actors did a fantastic job in the movie. The ringraiths , the orcs , the cave troll , and the balrog looked awsome! This movie did a very good job at following J.R.R. Tolkiens first book of The Lord Of The Rings. I can't wait untill the other two movies come out in theaters. The Two Towers and The Return Of The King will be as wonderful as the first Lord Of The Rings movie - The Fellowship Of The Ring - and will follow J.R.R. Tolkiens Lord Of The Rings books in a very well manner. Peter Jackson is now probably the best director since The Lord Of The Rings : The Fellowship Of The Ring won thirteen academy awards across the globe. I bet the other two Lord Of The Rings movies will win as many academy awards as the first movie directed by Peter Jackson.
