Summary: A Good Entry
Review: "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" is a completely enjoyable Godzilla movie, and, in terms of quality, probably the best of the 1970s Godzilla movies. Though aspects of it (like the silver-suited monkey aliens who want to destroy the world with the title mechanical Godzilla clone) are laughable, and the pacing is a bit uneven, the film feels a lot grittier and more mature than some of the previous entries. The monster fight scenes with Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, King Caeser (a rather bad idea for a monster, unfortunately), and, briefly, Angillas, are enjoyable as always, and things are a bit more lively than usual.
The DVD from Columbia Tristar is nothing short of a revealation. The film's brownish-red color palette looks brighter, clearer, and sharper than it has since probably its original theatrical release. Purists will be happy to know that, like Tristar's other recent Godzilla releases, both the Japanese and English-dubbed tracks are included. There are no extras other than some trailers (including one for Tristar's entire line of Godzilla movies and another for the Godzilla cartoon show).

Summary: The debut of Mechagodzilla and a demon monster.
Review: Also known as Godzilla vs The Cosmic Monster, Godzilla vs. The Bionic Monster.
This is the 14th film in the Godzilla film series.
A Japanese ceremonial dancer has visions of a monster about to strike the city. Meanwhile, a man enters a cave. It is discovered there are drawings on the wall foretelling of a monster that could destroy the world. Also there is a statue of a demon monster. The prediction is: "When a black mountain appears above the shoreline, a huge monster will come forward and try to destroy the world. When the red moon sets and the sun rises west, two monsters will appear to save the people".
There have been earthquakes everyday for 10 days. Something is moving underground. Godzilla returns. People think the prophecy is about Godzilla, but the elders believe it is a more destructive monster yet to appear.
Godzilla is fighting with his friend the Porcupine monster. Later, another Godzilla monster appears out of Mt. Fugi. it is a cyborg known as Mechagodzilla and it is being controlled by the evil space invaders.
Buit that's not all, another monster is about to be released. The very one that resembles the found statue.
The next film in the series: Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

Summary: A few words in defense of Godzilla...
Review: First off, anyone who buys these(this one in particular)movies for a small child needs to know these "childrens" Godzilla films were made for the Japanese market. At the time they were made, most of the nation was still scarred from the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this is why Godzilla is a such a popular and poignant character in Japanese culture; he embodies the destruction and terror the atomic/nuclear age brought to this particular country. The threat was still prevalent, and if I lived in the only country in the world that had first-hand experience of its destructive power(and the aftermath of it), I would definately relate to these films, as did the people of Japan. The Japanese children at the time were aware of what had happened to their parents and their nation, and were accordingly less shielded to violence than American children. Aside from that, anyone who decides to show this to a child, remember; this is a MONSTER MOVIE and MONSTERS ARE SUPPOSED TO SCARE CHILDREN. So, please use your common sense before showing this to a 3-year-old, ok?

Summary: THIS MOVIE MADE MY BROTHER CRY!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: First off, as someone who has been a Godzilla fan for ages, I know all the films by heart and can tell you why each one is good and bad in it's own various ways. Now for the DVD. This particular release is a new HD transfer of the international release print done by Sony Pictures as all of their DVD's now feature HD transfers. The original Japanese audio comes from the recently released Japanese 50th anniversary DVD collection so it sounds wonderful while the English audio is taken from the original international print and while neither one has real directional sound, oddly enough, the Japanese track sounds the best as the English one is poorly balanced. I guess it comes from the poor ADR dialogue techniques often used with dubs. The video is a pristine anamorphic transfer of the international release print and is as good as it can get without digital restoration considering the fact that the film has held up well this long. I would really love it if each of the classic and 84-95 films were restored using the Lowry Digital Imagining software and techniques as they would really bring out the true beauty of these films. Anyway, if you like your Godzilla DVD's done the right way with quality, buy this one!

Summary: Spectacular Video Quality
Review: I'd have to say I've never seen this movie as clearly as it's presented on this DVD. The opening Anguirus scene, which always seemed to me to be murky, is very clear. Sony for some reason also decided to change the Toho logo to the new version, but it makes no difference overall. I recommend this DVD to all Godzilla and kaiju fans.

Summary: Bare Bones DVD, and a terrible movie.
Review: In 1977, when this movie was released, American Science Fiction movies were doing very good visual effects and creature designs, so the days of Godzilla seemed to be numbered. A fact that may explain why this movie did poor business at the movies here. It's a rather poor Godzilla picture. Mechagodzilla kind of ment that Toho had run out of ideas for new monsters for Godzilla to fight. A far cry from Ghidrah (Godzilla's most well known and well designed monster). Jun Fukuda made the movie with a police/spy feel to it, which seemed out of place for a monster picture, and Maruso Sato's score was weak, and well nothing like what Ifikube could do with these movies in so far as music goes. A Sad reminder that the Godzilla movies were ending, and we had that awful Hanna-Barbarra cartoon on that really was the last straw. The DVD has no bonus features (Big Surprise) and not even a theater trailer this time. CHEAP.

Summary: Pretty okay
Review: It's not one of the best from Toho studios, but not the worst either. The story line is really dull as is the dubbing. The monsters in the film include the awe inspiring Mechagodzilla, Godzilla, King Seeser (some giant hairy japanese god), and Angilious. The plot is again set around aliens releasing a giant monster that Godzilla has to defeat, but it is done better as in... lets say "Godzilla vs. Megalon", or "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster". Aliens send Mechagodzilla to destroy and take over the world. Mechagodzilla turns himself into Godzilla, and almost kills Angilious. He then runs into the real "King of the Monsters", and the rest is an all out monster bash that also introduces the new monster, King Seeser (as I see it, he's a King Kong rip off... the resemblance is uncanny because he roars like the Toho Kong, he's hairy, he's prayed to by japanese women, and he moves just like Kong). The fighting takes place in the daytime and all the effects are bright and an all around happy movie. It's predocessor was "Godzilla vs. Megalon" (1973) and followed by "Terror of Mechagodzilla" (1978). One of the better 70's Godzilla epics (but he still sports that awful Megarogoji costume that premiered in 1973).

Summary: Has Godzilla finally met his match?
Review: Summary: It's Godzilla meets Godzilla when the King of the Monsters does battle with a robot clone of himself.

Despite the above average monster effects, script, acting and score, there's something about this movie that just keeps it from being a Godzilla classic. Two and a half stars would be a more appropriate rating. Certainly worth viewing.

Next is "Terror of Mechagodzilla".
