I'd heard lots of bad reviews of this movie, but when I finally saw it, I didn't see why.

This is actually a good, interesting movie. It takes themes from *eXistenZ* (the fine line between what is real and what is not) and *The Matrix* (what if you discovered your world wasn't real?), mixes them, adds in a murder mystery and a love story more convincing than the one in *The Matrix*, and then tones down the special effects. If you pay attention, you may figure out much of this movie way ahead of time, as there are clues planted everywhere, but it's still fun to watch. The 1937 world is entertaining because of its authenticity.

The trailer paints this movie as being more suspenseful/action-packed than it really is. It may not be super suspenseful, but it's entertaining, thought-provoking, and worth your time.

Review: A friend suggested this movie to me and said that it was like the "Matrix" Unfortunately, the only similarity to the "Matrix" seems to be that it's science fiction, and it questions what reality really is. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the film because it kept my attention and was thought provoking. If you really feel like a suspenseful, thought-provoking science fiction film, then the thirteenth floor is worth it.

Review: This is your wannabe Matrix remake. With no-name actors and a bad story line. Some guy realizes that the computer world he "visits" is actually the real world and the one he's in currently is fake. Sound familiar? The special effects are sorry and the ending stinks too. Don't even rent it. The Matrix is much better. 1 star.

Review: I ENJOYED THE MOVIE VERY MUCH. THE REVIEWS I READ ON THE MOVIE WERE MIXED. I THINK THE SUBJECT MATTER WAS CLOSE TO THAT OF THE MATRIX BUT NOT AS COMPLEX. IT'S NOT A SPECIAL EFFECTS EXTRAVAGANZA, BUT IT IS INTELLIGENT SCIENCE-FICTION WITH JUST ENOUGH SPECIAL EFFECTS TO MAKE THE MOVIE WORK PROPERLY. AND SOME OF THE CONCEPTS THE MOVIE PRESENTS MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A MOVIE JUST TO SIT AND ESCAPE INTO FANTASY LAND FOR AWHILE, THEN I RECOMMEND IT.

Review: Despite all the bad reviews I have read for this film, I LOVED IT! I have watched it numerous times and I still continue to watch it. If you are a sci-fi buff, you will like this. I saw this in the theater and, unfortunately, it was only there for about 2 weeks (or less). I think I recognized the twist before it happened, but this movie definitely keeps you in anticipation. I think The Thirteenth Floor would have definitely gotten more of the spotlight had it not been released at approximately the same time as Matrix, but if you've seen the Matrix, you'll most likely enjoy a great flick like Thirteenth Floor.

Summary: Elevators sometimes skip "the thirteenth floor"
Review: but you shouldn't. This is a very good movie and most any sci-fi or cyber freak should enjoy it. The premise is that in the near future a Los Angeles-based company has almost perfected a virtual reality system so real that a customer can jack into it and experience 1937 L.A. as a real person, interacting with cyberpeople who behave as real as their real-world counterparts. When the Craig Bierko character's boss (played by Armin Mueller-Stahl) turns up dead, our hero has no choice but to go into the 1937 reality. He discovers a very spooky thing: those 1937 characters have developed an independent consciousness and don't realize that they are "unreal" in any sense, mere technical creations.

The plot thickens, and I don't want to spoil it. I thought this movie should have done much better at the box office, and possibly it would have if not for the fact that The Matrix blew it and quite a few ships out of the water in the virtual-reality flick department. But The Thirteenth Floor has its own charms, and is well worth enjoying on its own terms.

Review: This movie had a good idea behind it but it was poorly executed. That acting and directing was some of the worst I have seen. To my dismay that downfalls made it almost unwatchable.

Review: A very worthy sci-fi film, slightly let down by inferior acting and direction. The story is very interesting and the special effects are quite amazing - though 'The Matrix', both as a film and for its SFX is in an entirely superior league.

However, this is certainly worth watching - especially if you enjoy sci-fi. The plot is fascinating, the twists and turns unexpected and clever and the film really is a brave attempt at a totally different kind of 'sci-fi' thriller.

Review: This is the best film from dark 'virtual reality' films such as Dark City and The Matrix. Combine the X-Files (atmosphere) with Dark City (concept) and you'll get a good idea what style The Thirteenth Floor has.

I was expecting this to be a bit average when recommend to me by a friend, but I found this to be an amazingly dark and excellent thiller. It's well thought out and it hooked me more than anything I've seen for ages. The end has so much impact as a revelation.

And as for the comment - he should be horrified when he finds out? Well the fact was he was finding out gradually as everything pointed to him. It all made sense eventually, but resulted in a mix of a great sense of self worthlessness, confusion and anger, not horror for those who found out the truth. Some films are too over the top when handling this type of thing - this was spot on.
