Rating: Summary: Better than Subzero Review: Mask of the Phantasm rules as full-length Batman features go. However, this one isn't so bad on it's own.I've always prefered the older original designs myself, but the trimmed down sleeker versions aren't ugly. The animation shows it's overseas production roots a bit as characters make Japanese gestures or verge a little too much into the anime style. One such moment being when Kathy Duquesne pulls slightly on her lower eye-lid -a uniquely Japanese teasing gesture. But Mask of the Phantasm had it's awkward moments in animation as well. While the "Mystery" isn't particularily difficult to figure out, it's still entertaining, especially with the always excellent voice acting. The score isn't quite Shirley Walkeresque. But it does have its interesting jazzy sound. More of a feminine touch contrasted to the brassy batman theme. The dialogueless short "Chase Me" included in the extras is an artist experiement that is pulled off nicely. Batman has always been about mood and ambiance anyway. You can really never go wrong with something thought up by Paul Dini. This is an overall lighter Batman story that may go over better with the kids it will be inevitably bought for than Phantasm.
Rating: Summary: Great Story, Horrible Animation Review: Mystery of the Batwoman features a well written story, which is more than one can say about many feature films nowadays. As a fan of the various series, I found the animation work on Batwoman far weaker than on any of the television series or animated features. It is pretty horrible: stiff movement, flat looking characters, bad color work. Justice League is better every week, and it's free. I was particularly dissappointed that Bruce Timm's Justice League version of Batman was not used. With every new incarnation, Timm has signifigantly improved his Batman design, and it's a shame it wasn't used here. This one looks like the Batman featured in children's coloring books issued during the New Adventures of Batman run in the 90s.
Rating: Summary: Definitely watch it, but buy only if you LOVE Batman Review: Mystery of the Batwoman is a decidedly average Batman story. It doesn't come close to the writing triumphs of some of the Batman TAS episodes or even the preceding feature-length ones. The jazzy, laid-back music is completely inappropriate and takes a good deal away from many scenes. The art is clean, crisp, and fluid, but not anything like Sub-Zero's top-of-the-line pre-TNBA art (which honestly is the best Batman has ever looked). Of course, the greatest strength (and saving grace) of the film is the awesome voice acting. Kevin Conroy is still a completely believable Batman, and Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.'s Alfred is as witty as ever. This film strays from the dark, moody feel of the Batman cartoon, which is a BAD thing, but it does make up for it a bit with a good deal of humor. There is a "Batman breaking-and-entering to investigate" scene that is absolutely hilarious if you understand it. Finally, I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that there is a villain in the movie that we all love and is worth watching the film for. I won't say who it is.
Rating: Summary: Fun to watch Review: Mystery of the Batwoman wasn't too bad though I think Mask of the Phantasm was much better. The story line was different and the movie as a whole was a little lighter than most but it was still fun to watch. The hightlight of the DVD for me was the animated short called Chase Me. This was a music only themed feature that showed a chase between Batman and Catwoman and how they continue to walk that edge in their relationship with one another. The jazz style music played well with the action and story line.
Rating: Summary: Revisting An Old Friend Review: Mystery of the Batwoman, the latest Batman Animated effort, is a good story with the mystery not really being revealed until almost the end. Advice for those who buy the DVD, DO NOT go to the special features section first or there will be no "mystery" to the identity of Batwoman. The actual story itself is a five star effort, if only to see Batman back in action. Although more screen time with Robin (Tim Drake), Commissioner Gordon, and Barbara Gordon would have made this a real treat. The lack of quality extras are the reason for the score. No director's voice over, and the "Chase Me" extra is not an actual story. (I won't spoil it for you.) I would not put the story line on the same level as "Return of the Joker" from Batman Beyond, but it is better than 99% of the animation out today. Watching this DVD allowed me to long for the long awaited DVD release (someday!!) of the entire Batman Animated catalog, as well as hoping that someone will have the desire to pick this up again for another run at a regular television series.
Rating: Summary: Keep em Comin - Nothin Beats a Good Bat Story Review: Never a big comic reader, however big-timr TV junkie who's favorite half-hours were animated series of Batman. Always looking for latest DVD movie installments and ran into this at video store. What an awesome suprise...to me Batman is one of the baddest stories ever told. Personally I buy em all...good or bad...just so they keep re-writing and makin em. This DVD is great start to finish, opening credits have the Bat swinging around Gotham to an ultra-cool Jazz-interpretation of Bat theme.... the attention to detail seems far greater than any-other of the films. The story and dialogue is more refined & witty for older fans. The characters and setting is much more believable and dynamic than other flicks...best interpretation of Penquin ever and BANE is just off the charts. The scenery & direction suck you in... much more stylish and subtle. Soundtrack is awesome...dark and jazzy. Everything about it is just less SuperHeroeish.
Rating: Summary: Mystery of The Batwoman Review: Nice movie. As a fan of WB, I am planning to collect all the Superman Animated TV series, Batman Gotham Adventures series, Gotham Girls TV series, Animated Justice League TV series but how come no DVDs are out? ( Except for Justice League and even so, it's slow. Only till 'Paradise Lost' ) I am willing to pay good money for all these shows!
Rating: Summary: Decent story, great climax. Review: OK, this is not the same Batman we know and love from the "new" animated adventures, but most of the differences are forgivable. The new Bruce Wayne is kinder, gentler and at times a bit hoky, as is some of the dialogue. The story starts to gather some momentum though and before I knew it I was way into it. Yes, the animation isn't quite up to par with the series in it's heyday but again, the plot makes up for it. My only real issue was with the Shakira-esque night club number. If you're willing to accept a slightly different/lighter version of our beloved caped crusader I recommend the purchase but if you're a uber-purist definitely rent it first.
Rating: Summary: Great movie (read: not great cartoon) Review: Overall, this was a great 75 minutes. The plot/action works for kids, but also is very enjoyable for adults too.
Very much in the style of the original Batman: The animated series.
Well worth the purchase! I just added it to my wishlist.
Rating: Summary: Rent this, don't buy it! Review: The highly anticipated "Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman" sadly didn't live up to most of my expectations. I was really looking forward to this movie as it was the first time we'd get to explore the animated Batman's world since the series came to an end in 2000. Unfortunately, almost none of what fans have come to love about the animated series is present in this rushed final product. The animation is not very impressive considering this is a full-length feature, the moody gothic imagery from the original animated series is completly absent, and the classic Batman theme music is only heard for a brief few seconds in a couple of places! I couldn't understand why this was until I watched the the extra features, where it was explained that the producers wanted to distance themselves from the dark look of the original series and go for a more lighter tone, most likely to attract a younger crowd (i.e. no cool Batman poses, compelling fight sequences or good plot). The creative team went on to talk about how the script was finished in an incredibly fast amount of time and that they were already into production just a short time after that. That's nothing to brag about guys because it shows in the finished product! As a matter of fact, the story didn't hold my interest at all. It's hard to care about who Batwoman is when the suspects that are introduced are too sterotypical and one-dimensional. Not to mention that Batwoman never does anything extreme and lacks any edgy quality that makes for a good mystery character. I'm not saying that the mystery is easily solved, but there's just little motivation given to entice the viewer into guessing her identity or caring for that matter. The extra features on this disc are also mediocre at best. I was done with all of them in less than 40 minutes. Nothing really special here, just standard behind-the-scenes clips about how an animated film is put together. The "Chase Me" Batman short that's highly touted on the back cover was a pathetic 4 mintute uninspired story set entirely to music. Too cheap to spring for some voice-actors I guess. The only reason that I didn't give this DVD 1 star is because of my genuine love for the classic Batman characters. It was great to see and hear the original voice-actors reprising their respective roles as Jim Gordon, Bullock, Barbara Gorden, Robin, and Alfred...however brief their appearences might have been. In closing, this is a poorly made movie that lacks many of the key elements that made "Mask of the Phantasm" and the uncut "Return of the Joker" movies so entertaining, thus making this a forgetable film with no repeat viewing pleasure.
