Summary: A dated classic
Review: When I recently viewed this movie for the first time since 1982, I realized that the wonder was lost for me. I think that is because the movie leans so heavily on the culture and technology of the '80s. However, kids will still love it because the story is realistically told from a young boy's point of view and because the theme is one of love and hope. If for no other reason, this DVD is worth having because of the phenomenon that it was when it was first released.

Summary: Timeless!
Review: ET the Extra-Terrestrial is one of those timeless films that seems to reach out to the child in all of us. Magical, enthralling and spectacular special effects (who can forget that eye-catching sequence of Elliot riding past the full moon on his bike with E.T in the front basket), a generally heart warming story, immpecabble performances from its cast and lots of fun and jumpy moments to endure along the way. The film even as an adult manages to capture your emotions and the ending is sure to leave a big lump in your throat!! This classic movie makes a successful transisition to the DVD format which possibly enhances the special effects and spectacular stunts even greater and that are still vastly impressive. even by todays standards!
When E.T is abandoned by his pot-bellied extra-terrestrial pals, he is quickly befriended by a lonely little boy called Elliot (Henry Thomas). Elliot proceeds to teach his new alien friend to talk, to dress up in women's clothes and even drink beer. It holds many delightfully amusing moments and what the film greatly encapsulates is a refreshing, sentimental twist to it. Positivley an exciting adventure from beginning to end. The cast also includes a young Drew Barrymore as Gertie, Elliots younger sister who quickly befriends the friendly alien too, Dee Wallace as Mary, Peter Coyote as Keys and Robert MacNaughton as Michael. The film is mesmerising when watching this as a child and E.T remains Steven Speilbergs most enthralling masterpieces. The interesting array of extra features on here is enough reason to purchase this DVD in the first place!

Summary: a great movie
Review: I was prepared to blast the mighty Spielberg for his useless
PC changes to the original E.T. The digitally altered E.T. isn't bad - it's just different, and I don't want different. When they announced the original version would only be available in a ... box set, I was depressed. ... Both versions look wonderful, and it was a bit shocking to think it has been 20 years since the 18 year old version of me watched this movie 5 times in the summer of 1982. I laughed, I was moved and thrilled by the expert and deft touches
that keep the magic real for the entire movie. Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore still give 2 of the best kid performances ever.
E.T. gives a pretty excellent performance too. John Williams' music is still wonderful. It is nice to just see E.T. the movie instead of E.T. the phenomenon. If you liked it back then, get the DVD now.

Summary: My little one loves this movie!!!
Review: My nearly three-year-old saw the commercial for this movie and flipped! She was so excited when I brought it home. Need I tell you it's been playing DAILY at my house? She never seems to get bored with E.T. and "the boy"! Fortunately, it's a classic movie that is also adult-friendly.

Summary: E.T. A Must Have
Review: Not only does this DVD include Special Features like...John Williams conducting the films original score during the film's premiere in May 2002, but it includes the new edition which Spielberg perfected, as if he really needed to. This DVD is a must have..with more special features than you have time to watch. Spielberg rules!

Summary: The improvements are great, why the complaints????
Review: I just recently recieved my copy of the 2002 widescreen collector's edition and it was wonderful. I hadn't seen this movie since I was 11 years old, so I didn't notice the changes right away, except for the extra scenes (which I LOVED) especially the scene with Elliot giving E.T a bath. As Steven Speilberg explains, it makes Elliot and E.T's day together longer, and gives them more opportunity to bond. This scene should never have been cut. For those of you who, like me, haven't seen this movie in years, I recommend watching "The making of E.T." on the second disk, and then go ahead and watch the 2002 version, and see for yourself how great it looks AND sounds, with the digitally enhanced soundtrack. Speilberg explains what they did to improve certain scenes, with the advanced technology we have today. For example, he shows the way E.T's mouth moves when speaking in the 1982 version,(like a puppet) compared to how it moves in the 2002 version (he looks like he's really saying "home" or whatever dialog he's saying in a scene. He's WAY MORE LIFELIKE and more BELIVEABLE. Isn't that why we watch E.T- to suspend our disbelief and get lost in the story and the characters? If Speilberg could find a way to enhace the believablity and improve upon certain scenes, what's wrong with that? He knows what he's doing. ...Speilberg himself said the guns made him uneasy, and frankly, as the mother of a three-year old, I prefer not to have to explain to my daughter why those men have guns (which they never point, and are totally unnessary.) So it doesn't look odd at all to have walkie-talkies in their place, since they are not pointing walkie-talkies in place of guns, which was what I expected from reading that nasty review. I understand they wanted to make it more family-friendly, so my only complaint was, why not clean up the language? Was it really necessary for Elliot to call his brother "Penis Breath?" I know it's a funny and shocking line, by the mom's reaction, but it's not something I like my 3 year old to hear. All in all, this was a great package, and has wonderful bonus features on both disks, and I recommend it for anyone who likes beautiful touching family films with a message about love, tolerance, and friendship. We all need that.

Summary: I'm so glad they included the original...
Review: Who in heaven's name thought it was a good idea to re-visit this film in the editing booth?

FBI agents and police don't carry guns? Upon learning of extraterrestrial invasion? Even in a kid's movie, that stretches credibility. (I'm glad they had radios!) Next you'll be telling me that Han Solo didn't shoot first! (Oh, wait!)

Buy it for the original version, use the new version as a coaster.

Summary: They even put pictures of the lunch box I had as a kid...
Review: What can you say about a masterpiece. One of the truely inspiring movies that have changed and directed the lives of the kids from the 80's and the general populus of the world, time and time again. The movie is timeless. The bonus features make the movie even better, from the commentary of the actors, to the marketing material used (remeber the ET toys)

Thumbs Up
