Rating: Summary: What's wrong with you people? Review: I've read numerous reviews critcizing Jennifer Lopes's acting, especially her acting in this movie. Maybe those reviewers should watch this movie over, watching Lopez's every move, because she's a great actor, and her performance in 'The Cell' was excellent. Those reviewers that rate this movie poorly and Lopez's performance poorly aren't being honest with themselves. Maybe they didn't like Lopez because they don't like her music, or maybe they heard from someone else that she is a bad actor or actress. And maybe they say 'The Cell' is a bad movie because someone else said so, or simply because it was very disturbing for them to watch. Judge a movie based on the affect it has on you. If it greatly affects you, it is a great movie. If this movie didn't affect the people who said it was bad, my mistake, I'm in the wrong.
Rating: Summary: Interesting movie Review: I agree with an earlier review that it's very hard to rate this movie with conventional measures. In my opinion there are three areas where you could rate:1) Credibility; sometimes very poor - even unaceptable for hard-core sci-fi fans: Sometimes you really have to close your eyes and go through it in order not to waste the "mood", since the used tools and story twists are close to ridiculous. E.g. the printed tissues they lay on one's face to connect to the brain. 2) Visual effects; unprecedented: Not only the cgi visuals are very good but also "standard" visual effects are sometimes extraordinary. E.g. where Vince walks down stairs and drags cloths behind him which span the entire room. Salvador Dali might have loved this picture. It offers some very interesting surrealistic impressions. Unfortunately they're sometimes extremely pervert and disgusting... but in the end that's what it's all about.. 3) The idea; "To get into a murderer's mind": This is actually the only part where I could be persuaded to recommend this movie to someone. For me it's like a game, playing with thoughts and ideas what a psycho's mind, his fantasy and dreams could look like. Summary: It's not a movie for everybody - not even for the audience who's interested in horror movies. I get the feeling that the viewer sometimes should get offended and sometimes intrigued. Maybe it just uses some pseudo psychological knowledge to draw a plot but maybe there's more behind it ?
Rating: Summary: Almost as bad as Blair Witch Review: The story is straight out of Silence of the Lambs. Its one of those lets get inside the mind of the serial killer and find where he is hiding the victim movies that have been done into the ground. The director really trys to hide the weak plot under a bunch of special effects which in the end make this look like a Euro art fim reject. The director makes things even worse by casting Jennifer Lopez of all people to play a serious role. I don't care how good she looks she can't act. All she does is mumble her lines, walk around in her underwear, and gives no insight or sympathy to her character. In fact the only character who is even developed at all is the serial killer. There is quite a bit of gore for a mainstream movie but not even that is enough to make any true horror fan sit through this Mtv generation garbage. Go buy Silence of the Lambs or Exorcist 3 two great films that deal with the subject matter on a lower budget and 1000 times better
Rating: Summary: J.Lo meets Matrix/Silence of the Lambs Review: I thoroughly enjoyed The Cell for a variety of reasons. First, the cinematography is fantastic. Spectacular dream/nightmare sequences are beautifully shot. Costumes and special effects bring the dream sequences to the forefront of this movie. And it's not just visuals without substance, the dream sequences are an absolute feast for the lover of psycho-thrillers. Second is a great story. The plot ranks up there with Silence of The Lambs for thriller, and combines some of the Matrix. Third is good acting. Not particularly aquainted with J.Lo's acting, my expectation was ...unsure and curious. But she more than carries her role, and she is on her way to a solid acting career, if she so desires. I really enjoyed this movie.
Rating: Summary: Glitz can't save this stinker Review: Terrible film glossed over with MTV imagery. As a horror fan I can honestly say I've never seen such a mean-spirited and gratuitous waste of celluloid. Aside from spoon-fed trendiness, this director has no taste whatsoever. Why did Jennifer Lopez feel the need to make this picture? I hope she learned from her mistake.
Rating: Summary: 2 stars for uniqueness & effort Review: I agree on the following counts: (1) the plot is too shallow; (2) J. Lopez should stop 'acting' & (3) the fim relied heavily on the effects. But let us give the director some credit for his work for it takes creativity & uniqueness to come up with something different & infamous for the market to view. Oh, & yes, great effort to pull the entire film together.
Rating: Summary: A Vile Film Review: I am astonished that anyone who has seen this film would have something positive to say about it. The imagery in this film is not only boring, but offensive and gratuitous. It is as if someone on acid watched "Silence of the Lambs" decided to make a movie. Worse still is Jennifer Lopez's "acting" in the film. She really has no business being in any legitimate motion picture, and should stick to music (where the engineers can clean up any inadequacies in her voice elecronically). In short, avoid this disgusting film, and hope that the knuckleheads in Hollywood stop making this trash!
Rating: Summary: If Only I Could Give This a ZERO! Review: Amazing special effects cannot make this hodge-podge of pornigraphic violence into a film worth watching. I am a big horror film fan, however it is obvious here that the emphasis is not on plot but on extreme gruesome violence dressed up with CGI effects. In a nutshell, Lopez gets into the head of a fat serial-killer who, until he ended up in a coma, had been drowning young women and bleaching their bodys. It gets worse from there. Don't waste your time.
Rating: Summary: Alternately dull and disgusting Review: Repulsive & sadistic imagery from the beginning. The killer is caught about fifteen minutes into the film so the remainder is of the "we-have-to-find-his-last-victim-because-she-may-still-be-alive" formula which has been done better in even made-for-TV movies. In this case, the killer is in a coma and Jennifer Lopez has to get inside his head. Convincing CGI special effects.
Rating: Summary: A movie that stays with you Review: Some movies are easy to review. They're either obviously bad or breathtakingly good. Then a movie like "The Cell" comes along, and I find myself unable to fully elucidate which position I take. Is it a visual triumph, acted out with brilliance by Vince Vaughn and Vincent D'Onofrio? Yes. Is Jennifer Lopez an actress whose charisma cannot make up for the fact that she's a little flat? Yes. Basically, I think it's worth watching, but the plot is a little thin. In some alternate universe, D'Onofrio would have an Oscar statuette on his mantel for this movie. If you've liked his work in the past, then certainly do pick this up. It's not a movie for everybody (what good movie is?), but it takes audacious risks and delivers on most of them. As for the DVD, this is a fine transfer. Looks great, and has some interesting extras. Good commentary by Singh, though nothing remarkable
