Summary: Turn Off the Lights When You See This Movie!
Review: This is the best sci-fi, horror, action film I have ever seen in my life. This movie rocks all the time! Finally out on DVD! The remastering of the whole film to DVD is perfect- sight and sound! What really scared me in this movie was the music- that one note thumping sound made me hide under the sofa waiting for the next scene scary to happen, and I've seen this movie like 30 times and I still cant get used to the high-wire fright scenes. Special Effects are awesome and still one of the best I've seen. Acting was perfect. Kurt Russell fits the role. What else can I say? Pick this movie-NOW! Turn-off the lights when you see this one.

Summary: Buried for years?? A great movie!!
Review: 1982. I challenge you to show this film to someone who has not heard of it; shouldn't be hard. Ask them at the end when they think it was made. Their answer will not be 1982. The video transfer is nothing short of genius, when you consider the age of the source. The audio is pretty good too. Did they have 5.1 back then? Don't think so. The film itself is a masterpiece of terror (I am not a Carpenter fan). The fact that the cast is all male adds tension, to an already taught situation. The casting for this film is spot on. Russell is excellent as "Macready" and Wilford Brimley's performance deserves a mention too. The last ingredient that makes this film a classic is the special effects work of Rob Bottin. Some of it looks too real.Oh and it also happens to have some of the best special features on any DVD to date. If you don't own it on DVD, then why do you even have a player?

Summary: John Carpenter and Kurt Russell take horror to another level
Review: I have become a big fan of John Carpenter's having rented nearly every one of his films from the video store. One of the gems I came across was this great old fashioned horror films with Kurt Russell. The story of a science team that comes in contact with an alien while isolated in the middle of the antartic is both terrifying and thrilling. As they learn of the alien's ability to alter it's appearance the plot takes quite a turn and soon you are unsure of who to trust and who to run from. It is smart and modest without over doing the action. And the best part is the non-hollywood ending that leaves you wanting to repeat your viewing. I loved it!

Summary: A true adventure in fright!
Review: This movie comes from the days when the audience didn't need to be thrilled in the first 10 seconds with some exaggerated, lame horror sequence. John Carpenter builds suspense scene after scene in this timeless movie. The special effects aren't digital, but who cares, they look VERY believable and that's what truly matters. There's a reason why Time magazine called this movie "horrific" when it first came out. The cast, which truly believed in this movie (as noted in the director commentary portion of the DVD), put every effort to convey the horror of being cut off from society, thousands of miles inside Antarctica, while being hunted by the most merciless of fiends. You'll love the plot, the characters, and the sound which pulsates along with your heart as you are drawn into this wickedly successful suspense movie.

Summary: Good thing it came out in 1982
Review: Yes, no doubt, one of the best sci-fi films of the 80s'. Doesn't rely on gore as most 80s'horror and sci-fi did (although there is plenty!) What really scared me was the feeling of total isolation and the fact that nobody could be trusted. This movie was better than the original version--which is rare for any remake. Kurt Russel and John Carpenter work very well together. I'm glad that this movie came out in 1982 instead of today. If it came out now it would be filled with cheezy, fake looking digital special effects. Yes, in some ways this film looks dated--sometimes that's a good thing!

Summary: Carpenter's excellent project
Review: John Carpenter receives an "A+" from this critic. Following the theme from the original book "Who goes there ?" rather than the film "The Thing", from the early 50's, Carpenter had created an incredibly graphic, yet terribly underrated movie. At least it was WAY underrated by the popular film critics. This movie blends a great cast of actors with superb special effects (especially for 1981-82) in which computer animation was almost non-existent. Kurt Russel heads up a cast of very believable characters on a scientific research project in Antarctica. These scientists stumble upon an alien life-form which had been frozen for 100,00 years. Now it is unfrozen, and unfortunately for them, this alien is NOT friendly, and can imitate their cells (and thus, their bodies) once it attacks them. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is not for people with a weak stomach, but for those who love gory films which actually have a great (and scientifically interesting) plot as opposed to others in the genre, it's a great thriller. It also combines the horror with a "Who is the Thing now?" attitude, in which the researchers have no idea who actually IS the Thing at any given time. Again, this is a GRAPHIC movie, but a fantastic piece of work by John Carpenter. Also, credit must go to the fine actors, the great special effects, and the photographers. A must see for any true horror/science fiction fan !

Summary: Cold day (and night) in hell
Review: This (to me) ranks as Carpenters best effort. I have no idea as to why the film is not more well known. The story line, acting and special effects are all top notch. The setting is breath taking. This film was made before the cheesy computer animated effects of the 90's so what you see looks incredibly real. There is alot of gore, slime, guts, profanity and copious violence. The tied to the couch scene (as scary as it is) will also have you laughing. The spider-head is a classic! Watch this in a dark room with your sweetie, she will be in your lap after the first "transformation". While the first Alien movie teased us by only giving us a glimpse of the creature here and there, this ET is in your face (and chest cavity, and head, and blood) from start to finish. What a winner this one is! Kurt Russell should beg for a sequel while he still looks young enough to pull it off.

Summary: We'll Just Have To Wait And See...
Review: This is definitely one of two of Carpenter's best films. The other would be Halloween. Carpenter shows just how horror should be done, not with a gore fest but with suspense and action. Kurt Russell was perfectly cast for this part. The directing is superior, the acting is good. The story is wonderful. Watch this one on a cold, wintery night with the lights out. This is a must have for any film collector.

Summary: ITS JUST OKAY
Review: ENNIO MORRICONE - ý bealive- is the star of the movie. Great theme... Antartic ambient ýs great and if you like some ice, some snow, some cold and the feeling of isolation you will love it. But the rest is... ýhhhhh. My advice is: first rent it, then buy it! -I bought the dvd! (but just for the antartic ambient and for the nice looking huskys though:)
