Summary: John Carpenters best
Review: One of the main problems I have with the "Horror" movies today is that they are generally stupid and gross. That is not the case with this film. This movie kept me glued to my seat and was truely freightening! In fact, it is one of the best horror pictures made in the '80's or the '90's for that matter. Kurt Russell is excellent as always.

Summary: Underrated horror masterpiece
Review: John Carpenter's finest hour without a doubt, The Thing is a truly underrated horror masterpiece. Great preformances by the entire cast and special FX that are just as powerful today makes 'The Thing' one of the best films to have come out in the 80's. Though you wouldn't have know that at the time of the release -- It recieved alot of unjust criticism due to its graphic nature. But due to its power, it has endured to this day and is finally being recognized for this film that it is. Buy this movie.

Summary: Very scary.
Review: I don't give very many movies 5 stars, but this sci fi/horror film impressed me very much. I first saw this when I was about 5 years old (yes, my parents let me watch this!) and it scared the wits out of me. I just bought it a couple weeks ago and it is still just as scary as I remember it. Great F/X, acting, and directing. Not to mention a scary atmosphere and score. I also have seen all of director John Carpenter's films, and this is even better than Halloween. I still cross my fingers that Carpenter decides to make a sequel. Hay, it could happen, he made a sequel to Escape From New York 15 years later, lets just hope The Thing II is better than Escape From L.A.

Summary: An amazing DVD title
Review: I still remember seeing John Carpenter's "The Thing" on the widescreen during it's theatrical run, and the memory of the audience's reaction to this film still makes me grin. People were shrieking and jumping; it was WONDERFUL. This film did not receive the recognition it deserves during its run, and I am one happy camper that Universal decided to give it the Collector's Edition treatment. If not THE best, it is certainly ONE of the best films by John Carpenter. The setting, mood, music and acting are great. Although the horrific elements are there in full force thanks to Bottin's excellent F/X work, it is the sense of psychological horror that makes this one work; that feeling of dread, isolation, being trapped in a situation from which there is no escape. HOO BOY. I still consider this one of my all time favorites. This DVD is beautiful. The picture and sound are top-notch and the DVD extras are a sterling example of what others should strive for. It will take you quite a while to dig through all the treasure contained on this disc, and it is well worth the effort. I cannot recommend this one highly enough, and if I could give it 10 stars, I wouldn't hesitate.

Summary: Bloody, gory special effects. Horrifying movie.
Review: I'm not sure why the collectors edition shows a release date of August considering I bought my copy about 3 or so months ago.

This DVD costs about as much as the usual collectors edition. I think I paid around $28 or so.

This is the most feature packed DVD I have. Besides the movie, there are dozens of stills, several outtakes, and a long (about 1 1/2 hours) series of interviews with the cast and crew. They go into detail about the history of the movie, the book "Who Goes There?" where it came from, how they did much of the scenery, where it was filmed, and Rob Bottin and Stan Winston explain how they did most of the special effects.

There is much more on the DVD than just that. At first I hesitated to buy it, but I really loved the movie. Now that I own it, I wouldn't think twice if I had to do it again.

Any true fan of The Thing should own this. Even if you don't have a DVD player, get it for the future. You will be very glad you did.

Crystal clear picture, great sound, wide screen, and loaded with features. This was in my DVD player for 3 straight months!

The highlights I would say would have to be the dog bursting into the alien, the scene with the doctor trying to revive Norris on the operating table, the final confrontation, but the best has to be the blood test scene. That is the most talked about. During the audio play watching the movie while John Carpenter and Kurt Russell are giving commentary, John admits that the blood test scene is why he wanted to film the movie.

The commentary by John Carpenter and Kurt Russell is outstanding. They give you so much information. They tell you where scenes are done, scenes shot with paintings, and other pieces of little known information.

So again, for all true fans of The Thing, guaranteed you will love this edition.

As for the history of the movie, there are plenty of other reviews about that. However, a good detail of what the collectors edition has was necessary.

Summary: This classic horror movie gets the treatment it deserves
Review: A research team stationed in the antartic get infected by an alien organism that infects a human host and then imitates it. This is one of John Carpenter's best. In stands right next to Halloween. This version has obviously had the picture cleaned up for the DVD release with a remastered 5.1 Dolby track. It also comes with a wonderful 80 minute documentary that is very informative and enjoyable. It also comes with Outtakes from the film, Production notes, Storyboards, Theatrical trailer, Location Design ect. The only thing it is missing is alternative endings, because I know they exist. But this is still a worthy DVD and a must have for any horror fan.

Summary: Horror at its best
Review: Ive always liked those old movies that had models and such rather then computer animation, i mean there is hardly any good horror/sci-fi films using computer graphics, the only ones that were good were Pitch black, and Event horizon.

The Thing is a masterpiece, First it created something original and differant, an alien that uses humans as part of them making it more frightning, plus a remote place where it all happens. A great movie that will scare the living daylights out of you with its over the top effects. By the way if any of you are into computer games pick up Martian Gothic, its almost exactly like the thing, except its on Mars in a base and you control three characters to find out what happened inside...

Summary: One of the best sci-fi/horror flicks ever!
Review: Spoilers ahead.Read carefully!

Next to Halloween, this is one of John Carpenter's best movie's ever (if not,his best). The special F/X are brilliant.Even compared to today's F/X, their a bloody good match. They were simply incredible.A monster with a human head comes out of a scientist's stomach and deavours another scientist,a man's head tranforms into a spider, a dog tranforms into, umm.I can't describe it! The acting is excellent. The direction is flawless and Carpenter adds new ground to the horror/sci-fi barrier. The story is wonderful and adds a very refreshing twist to the genre.Instead of mindlessy shishkabobing the scientist's,an virus is entering their body's and messing up their DNA,causing them to become hideous mutations. It's just marvellous! The ending is satisfactory enough and the action is plentiful. This is simply brilliant. The special F/X as I said earlier, are breath-taking and not to mention VERY gruesome. The Dog scene can't even be described.Overall, this is a remake that beats the hell outta the original.Excellent acting, incredible special F/X, brilliant plot, terrific direction and almost everything else make this an absolute must for any horror/sci-fi freak. And if your looking for gore, you've come to the right place! Rated R for gore galore, strong language and disturbing, gruesome imagery.
