Summary: Disgusting Yet Fun
Review: Yes, this film is absolutely, horrifyingly, say-goodbye-to-your-lunch disgusting. Honestly, however, that's not what makes the film. While it doesn't begin to approach the level of camp you'd find in, say, an Evil Dead film (although we do get 'boomsticks'), "The Thing" is a hilarious film. Yes, it's disgusting to see a guy's head plop off and land upside-down. Yes, it's disgusting to see the inverted head grow spider-legs and crawl around on the ground... but when you have four guys tied down to a bench five feet away, an alien monster, and a guy with a flamethrower there too, it adds up to a perfect blend of horror, gore, camp, and humor.

Don't ask me why. Maybe it's Kurt Russell, a far more appealing action star than talentless hacks like Ah-nold. Maybe it's the impressive gore effects. Maybe it's the great plot (yes, there is a plot). This film succeeds in all kinds of ways.

With "The Thing", John Carpenter succeeds in creating a wonderfully claustrophobic atmosphere--a cold, bleak research station in the middle of the Antarctic. The score and cinematography help accentuate the frenzied paranoia, jumping from moments of eerie silence to eye-opening action.

I'm not particularly disposed or inclined to gorefests, but this film is such a classic that it can't be ignored. Definitely the best performance I've seen from Kurt Russell, and hands-down my favorite Carpenter film. There's a good reason it's a cult classic! Pick up a copy, turn off the lights, grab any combination of friends and beer, and I guarantee you'll have a good time.

Summary: the Thing gave me the creeps!
Review: One of the last great John Carpender filcks, the Thing(remake of the 1951 movie) after twenty years can still make you jump, scream, and gross you out! Set in '82 an Antartica post that finds a strange alien that has been lying dormate for thousands of years and now is infecting the crew. Wonderful effects and great suspense the Thing is a must for horror fans!

Summary: Better as the years pass.
Review: Growing up I was very fond of the '51 version of John W. Campbell's story. One of my favorites that I made sure I watched every year. When VCR's strolled along it was one of my first movies I picked up. John Carpenter's story is closer to Campbell's work and is a very good movie with a compelling cast. it gives you the feeling of being isolated right along with the characters and you even start to wonder who is human and who isn't.
This movie has become a cult classic and another movie, possibly based on Dark Horse Comic's, would have a good following too.

Summary: Outstanding Movie!
Review: There is one word to describe this movie.Awesome (or breathtaking). I have never seen Kurt Russell play a better role.
Wilford Brimley adds to the quality of this film. The real show stopper is the monster that has invaded the base that they are on.This monster has the ability to transform into any living creature. All of the transformations done by the monster in this film are something to behold. This movie is scary as well as being very exciting. This movie will definitely hold your

attention. Buy this movie and watch it. You will never forget it.
It is definitely a classic.

Summary: Excellent Sci-fi horror movie!
Review: While it doesn't have the best of titles, John Carpenter's The Thing is an awesome sci-fi horror movie, with some pyschological thriller tossed in.

The movies begins as a group of Norwegians try to shoot down a dog in Antarctica, even tossing grenades at it. When they are finally killed by the American Research group who owns the dog, trouble soon follows. An exploration of the Norwegian base finds some severely massacred bodies, and nearby is an alien spacecraft. Soon, the research team comes upon the thing, and alien that can perfectly imitate any life form. Trust goes out the window as a great cast makes you unsure of who to trust and who to not believe.

The movie is definitely not for the faint of heart, with some gruesome autopsy scenes and more, but the gore doesn't really make the movie, it's the great story and acting. Kurt Russell does an excellent job playing the helicopter pilot who takes lead after discovery of the thing. The movie will keep you glued to the screen, and is truly a fun movie to watch. If you're a fan of sci-fi, or horror, you'll love this movie!

Summary: "John Carpenter's The Thing"
Review: The Thing (R) [5]/5

Directed by: John Carpenter.
Synopsis: A shape shifting creature terrorizes an arctic research team.

Review: This film is excellent let's get that out of the way. One of the most terrifying creatures to ever bloody up the silver screen is a delight to behold. The use of creature effects instead of stop motion make this baby look as polished now as it was then. An arctic research time is under siege when some crazed foreigners unearthed an alien life form that has now come into there camp. The only way to kill one is to burn it, and worst of all it can absorb you, take your form, and make several copies of itself. Trust no one! A true horror classic from the master! Kurt Russell is absolutely incredible, Keith David is a great tough guy, and the whole supporting cast is excellent. Carpenter goes all out building the suspense, delivering eerie shots, and shocking images. I loved his fade to blacks. Carpenter is the man! As for the DVD? This is a dream come true. This baby is chocked full of extras and well worth your hard earned cash.

Summary: Special Effects at their best
Review: Over the years since it's release, I've watched this film many times. I am still impressed by the special effects, and a good creepy story. Today's digital effects may dazzle, but they're no scarier than anything that was presented in The Thing 20 years ago. The models, puppetry and makeup still work.

If you're looking for gratuitous pin-up shots, you won't find them (or a female for that matter) in this film. If you are looking for a movie that will keep you guessing beyond the final credits, this may be the film for you. If you are looking for the kind of Boogey-man frights that you experienced at horror movies as a kid, then this is definitely the film for you.

Summary: RETURN TO A SIMPLER, MORE INNOCENT TIME...
Review: Two-time Academy award-winner Tom Hanks made his directorial debut with this earnest look back at the 60's music scene. Peppered by a finger-popping soundtrack and Liv Tyler's convincing trailer park pout, THE THING rates as pleasant, tuneful fare that's fun for the whole family!

Summary: Damn!
Review: I can see why so many critics hated this film, in 1982 most movie goers had a light feeling about nasty from outer space, the only nasty that most be people had to deal with were Giger's
monster in *Alien*, little brown, multi-color eyes man from mars in * War of the Worlds*, Jubba the Hutt, and anything that was seen in Star Trek.

It stars out with a helicopter chasing of all things, a wolf. This gives the impression that theses guys are poachers and we want very bad things to happen to them. After all one guy is shooting at it with an assault rifle, (Looks like a H&K G3 or an Ak-47) then throw grenades at it. gee this guys are desperate to get there pooch.

right there is your first clue that something amiss, if these Norwegians are poachers, then why are they using incensory devices.

The pooch runs in into an American research station all the docs come out to see what is going on. the wolf runs right into the camp and huddle beside the animal handler. the Norwegian with the gun screams some babble and starts shooting. (The helicopter that he came in was blown up when the pilot drop a grenade and went off in his face) The Norwegian with the rifle gets his head shoot off by a sheriff like person.

The interior film is built around classic 1950 red scare suspense that meshes with the movie perfectly and has a strange bed fellow with THE most repulsive visual effects EVER, like a dogs head splitting open life a flower and it's tongue flopping around like a fish out of water. The THING is combination of the Blob, Giger's Alien, and, do i dear say, Dean Knooz creature in Phantoms.

This is truly one of John Carpenter's and Kurt Russell (I almost typed Russell Crowe, HA!) best films. Ts sure as hell didn't not work for 1982, but after Aliens, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers, it's a barrel of fun full of napalm for today.

Summary: Terrifying
Review: This movie is really scary, and it's amazing how real everything feels in it. Some of the transformation sequences are sort of funny since they're so over the top, but the movie itself is dead serious. It's a wonder none of the actors got badly hurt doing some of this stuff, especially the fire sequences. Many feel this is Carpenter's finest work, and while I'm more of a fan of Halloween and The Fog, I appreciate The Thing as a true landmark in 80's horror.

The DVD is loaded with features, so many that it'll take you almost a whole afternoon to watch them all. The commentary with Kurt Russell and John Carpenter is great, and pretty funny. The interviews are all very informative, and I have more appreciation for the film as a result. The video isn't anamorphic which is a shame, but it's decent. The sound could have used some work too, but the DVD as a whole is a great value. This movie makes you never want to visit any of the planet's polar regions, that's for sure.
