Summary: ALIEN has always been a classic.
Review: I have owned the VHS version for several years and, although the sound throughout is only fair, the picture quality has been good. Now, with the 1999 re-release of ALIEN (both VHS & DVD), et. al., I run into a quandary. The DVD release has "deleted footage" added and runs approx. 117 minutes, which is exactly the same as the VHS timing; yet, the VHS box says nothing about added footage. Can anyone "out there" reading this tell me what's going on? Does the new VHS re-release also have the added footage? If so, what added scenes are these? Anyway, ALIEN is a brilliant film, especially for its time. Yes, it is a tad slow-moving and murky, but this is purposeful and suspenseful. The film is worth watching for Weaver, alone. She's wonderful--- and remains so throughout the Alien "series." The recent re-release of ALIENS (on VHS) does have added footage which enhances the film immensely; fact is, I can't comprehend the deletion of many scenes which are critical to the plot (e.g. Ripley's discovery that her daughter is dead, etc.). Go figure.

Review: This is the greatest horror film of all time. the amazon review is full of.. well you know. The Laserdisc is a 5.1 audio, and although this one is labeled as 5.1, the surround sound is essentially mono making it a 4.1. Im not sure if you understand that, but a DVD/audio nut will know what I mean.

Review: 'Stunning' is the only word that can do this DVD justice - one of the best films ever made has just got even better. 20th century fox have done a great job and I hope this is a sign of things to come. If all DVD's were of this quality then the World would be a better place! The extra features are well worth seeing as well. Superb.

Summary: A PREDICTABLE, SEMI-ENJOYABLE ROMP ON A GOOD DVD
Review: The Alien DVD features possibly the best-designed menu and most enjoyable bonus extras ever to grace a disc, but the movie itself is extremely flawed. I have to emphasise the fact that the menu is totally superb, both well designed and interesting to explore. The superb extra features are not only enjoyable, but also plentiful. The director's commentary is extremely informative and the deleted scenes and outtakes and entertaining to watch. Unfortunately, as some one else has commented, the sound isn't up to the standards of today's DVDs' despite the THX remastering. The movie itself is a moderately terrifying, gripping movie. That's it, there is no character development, no real emotions (with the exception of demented screaming) and is utterly, utterly predictable. The special effects are drab. Yes, I appreciate that they are from 1979, but Star Wars came two years earlier and was literally lightyears ahead. The whole film is in murky, dark colours and the slow-motion nature of the action and development of the story (if any) is so unbelievably snail-paced it edges to the limits of ridicule. The DVD people have done a great job on the menu and extra stuff, but in my opinion, the movie itself was never worthy of the attention it got in the first place.

Review: The picture quality for a film that's 20 years old is outstanding. I was totally impressed. The DVD main menu is the best I've seen, they actually make it fun to navigate through the options. The extra footage is great, really enjoyed it. This DVD has ton's of options, you won't be sad you bought this. The sound is a little lacking, but can be expected from the poor quality of sound that existed 20 years ago. Pop in the Aliens DVD and you'll hear outstanding sound effects. The Dolby digital is great, probably better than watching it in the theater 20 years ago. This is a four star video (due to the sound), but definitely worth buying if you like thrillers and aliens... My one complaint, the transfer between layers is rather obvious, they should do it in a black scene...

Review: alien feature is fine,however the outakes/deleted scenes are pixeled, and of lesser quality(have i got a dodgy disc?), if not i might still but the collectors laserdisc (does it have all the deleted scenes/outakes?). also alternate soundtrack plays the original main title and end title ,and original soundtrack plays alternate main and end titles(?).

Review: Buy this DVD for the audio commentary by dir. Ridley Scott alone - it's awesome! (I bought the DVD of "Thelma & Louise" for this very same reason)He's insights are astounding and add a whole new dimension to the film! The picture transfer is'nt bad either, although I was hoping for a cleaner quality picture - the widescreen aspect ratio is lovely though!

Summary: Great story line/plot! Improved upon by "Aliens."
Review: It took two viewings of this Sci-Fi film for me to get into it, though it was, for its time, very scary. The concept of a parasite that would lay it's egg inside a human where it would gestate and become one of the most terrifying creatures ever was fantastic and unique! This film was great because it was believable by anyone taking the time to think about "other world" beings' response to our invasion of their territory. It was a pleasure to see that the aliens were not silly robots that could speak english or were even in the mood to negotiate! The characters could have used more punch, though. For the most part, they were not given enough dimension, which comes, in part, to the fact that it took longer than necessary to get the plot off the ground. As usual, Sigourney Weaver was in good form, and Veronica Cartwright, Tom Skerritt and Ian Holm were great in their roles. The coolest part of the plot was the Alien itself: an Acid-for-blood creature that, as Yaphet Kotto's character said: "You don't dare kill." Overall, a very enjoyable film and a good lead into the action of the fantastic sequel "Aliens." The DVD Release of "Alien" was a marked improvement over VHS.

Summary: Move over E.T.
Review: The scariest Sci-Fi movie of all time still stands as the scariest. If you thought aliens were little green men that flew spaceships, forget it, this is the way aliens are supposed be: 8 foot tall acid-bearing, double-mouthed creatures. Jerry Goldsmith's music score for the film fits the mood perfectly, and the DVD version of Alien really shows what DVD can really do. This movie skyrocketed the careers of Sigourney Weaver and Tom Skeritt, and is certainly Ridley Scott's best movie yet. It's perfect for anyone who likes sci-fi horror and would like a rest from watching those friendly alien movies like E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Review: Aliens is a classic,First saw when I was 8, scared the hell out if me. I'm very happy with great interactive menus. Film companys should take the time and do all the exta work to make DVD movies more enjoyable!
