Summary: Funny yet reverent
Review: I saw this film when it screened at the Egyptian in Hollywood, and thought it was hysterical. It's one of those rare documentaries about extremely odd people that is really on the side of the extremely odd person. The obvious comparison is with the movie "Trekkies," but while that film simply spotlighted the Star Trek aficionado in general, "StarWoids" takes the Star Wars enthusiast and puts them in a context -- the countdown to the opening of "Phantom Menace," the folks who waited in the lines, and the rivalries that develop between and among them. Przywara is at the top of his game here. Truly inspired viewing for fan-geeks and the people who love them.

Summary: Good fun, kind hearted doc
Review: I thought all fan boys (and girls) were kind of nuts and a story on Star Wars fanatics waiting to see a movie would be a great laugh. It was extremely funny, but for completely different reasons. I walked away from this doc actually caring about these people in line. Yes, they are extreme, but they create a certain bond with an each other, a bond created by all things, a piece of commercial filmmaking. The pieces between the line waiting are also a laugh riot! The guy who goes from store to store to collect figures was worth the price of the DVD alone. A well made doc, I must say. Hats off to all that were involved in making a documentary that was better than the movie it was actually MADE ABOUT!

Review: I was fortunate enough to watch this movie at the East Lansing film festival. I laughed so hard that I cried. The people in the film are hilarious to watch. The scene with the Jawa's eyes falling off is best. Also, the guy collecting the toys is just fun to watch him make a plan to collect everything efficently.I'd recommend buying this DVD.

Summary: FAN-tastic
Review: I was lucky enough to view this documentary when it was being passed around Los Angeles some months ago like so much gold. I totally loathe the word "buzz" but that is what this Starwoids had in these hallowed parts. Finally I got my paws on a copy and it completely lived up to the great things I was hearing. Hilarious, moving, a total tribute to not only Star Wars but all films and the people who love them. Don't miss this one. It is for fans, friends of fans, grandmothers of fans. Share it with your fave cinegeek.

Summary: This is a Great Film!!!
Review: I'll have to admit, I was expecting another stereotypical Star Wars doc (i.e. "why do you like Star Wars?" times 100) Starwoids is so much more! For example, it has a plot and humor; both uncommon in fan documentaries. I'm not saying its all things to all fans, but... wait, that's what I'm saying. Check it out! (Its also on my "moderately priced" gift list for friends who already own the Episode I DVD.)

Summary: Boring and sad
Review: I've always thought of myself as a diehard Star Wars fan. I've spent thousands of dollars on the merchandise. I've spent hours creating artwork, custom props and toys from the Star Wars universe. But after viewing this documentary, I realize how far I really am from being a "fanatic". There are some genuinely funny moments in this video as well as some very interesting moments that capture the mood and excitement of the opening of the latest Star Wars film. But there isn't enough positive content here to rate more than two stars. The video consists of a series of sad and boring film snippets exposing how far some people have allowed a work of fiction to affect their real lives. These fans approach their efforts in creating Star Wars musicals and their "sacrifice" of waiting in line as if it were some grand humanitarian effort. While that isn’t the most uplifting topic, it could have been presented in a much more interesting fashion. The study of these fanatics might be interesting from a sociological standpoint, but I was hoping for a comical and insightful expose' on Star Wars fans. Instead, it's a mostly dry documentary that disrespectfully treats these people as if they were freak show attractions. There is an additional element that seems extremely out of place in this film; there is an overabundance of anti-religious sentiment. This little documentary is supposed to be about Star Wars, and yet they feel that they have to bash God every few minutes. It really seemed out of place and made me uncomfortable. Placing all of the anti-God sentiments aside, the documentary is still boring. I suppose that it might have held my interest more if I lived somewhere near one of the theaters that they profiled in California. But too much of the documentary focuses on those few people that waited in line outside two particular theaters in California. Overall, this is a boring, nearsighted, and sad look into fans of the Star Wars universe.

The side stories of SW fans are great. A woman paint her car like an X-wing! A High School version of SW: The Musical! I laughed myself silly and ended up rooting for these "super" fans in the end. Must see it to believe it.

Summary: Starwoids does precisely what it sets out to do
Review: This portrait of Star Wars fans awaiting the opening of Episode One is entertaining, often hilarious, strangely endearing, and just generally a very well done documentary. The slice of life quality is only enhanced by the sometimes rough shooting conditions. While I like Star Wars, I'm not quite a "Starwoid," yet I still found the film emminently watchable and a great deal of fun. For DVD viewers, the extras section is far better than I have seen in many high-budget releases. Although subtitles might have been a useful feature that is missing, make sure you catch the Kevin Smith interview, the out-takes from the Star Wars musical, not to mention the delightful and often side-splitting bantering during the director's commentary. Overall, this documentary is more than worth its price.
