Review: (Note: this review actually applies to the VHS version, but the only VHS version I could find at amazon was subbed in Spanish...)

Subspecies (Ted Nicolau, 1991)

It's not often I find a film whose sequels I know will be worthless vefore I even rent the first one. Such is the case here; everything that might have made the original Subspecies worth watching (Angus Scrimm, Laura Tate, and Michael Watson heading the column) disappear in the sequels. Ah, well. I didn't want to see them anyway after watching this one.

The time is present-day; the place Transylvania. King Vladislav (Scrimm, so memorable in the Phantasm series of films-- and rumors of whose death, by the way, are rgeatly exaggerated!) is dying, and he has sent for his younger son to be his heir. His firstborn, Radu (Anders Hove, presently in his second run on General Hospital), isn't terribly thrilled with this arrangement; after all, the kingship is his birthright. Of course, Radu is the nasty evil son and the other (whose identity is part of the mystery of the first half of the film... if you're an overly dense six-year-old) is the good, kind one. You can probably guess how the first scene ends without my telling you. Add to the mix three gorgeous grad students, one native and two American, doing research on the town's Festival of the Dead, and away you go.

Okay, it wasn't a total loss. The scenery (the film was shot on location in Transylvania) is exquisite, the three obligatory damsels in distress don't take their roles terribly seriously (though the one we actually WANT to see get nekkid never does), and it's not as long-seeming an ordeal as Bloodsong was. But it never really gets beyond the slash-and-scream brand name horror filmmaking, despite the many times it could have transcended. Worth watching if it's rainy and you have nothing better to do than watch videos. ** 1/2

Summary: One of the best!
Review: A classic vampire movie that has been underrated by many. A movie about two brothers who fight over the bloodstone that would give the owner the ability to not have to kill to stay alive. As the conflict between brothers gains momentum the budding of a love story between one of the brother's and a mortal woman named Michelle begins to blossom she is turned into a vampire by the end of the movie and goes into the end of the 1st part of a 4 movie story as his lover.

Summary: The Night Has Fangs!!!!!!!!
Review: Deep within the heart of Transylvania, a dark power from the past has resurfaced, and three beautiful young research students are caught in the midst of a supernatural battle for control of the vampire kingdom.
Blood is the tie that binds between the good Stefan (MICHAEL WATSON) and the evil Radu (ANDERS HOVE), vampire brothers reunited by the death of their father, King Vlad (ANGUS SCRIMM). Radu creates an army of hellish creatures of the night-subspecies-to help him in his wicked quest. Stefan has love on his side as Michelle (LAURA TATE), one of the students, joins him in the desperate fight to save the kingdom from the terrifying rule of Radu.

Summary: the only blind one is the one who wrote a bad review....
Review: Even though it is a low-budget film...this vampire flick is a movie that is worth watching more than once....it is a vampire movie about 2 brother who are vampires...1 evil(Radu) and the other good(stephan)....over the throne of all the vampires and ultimately the "bloodstone"...but there comes a third party into the story...stephan's love insterest Michelle...who just happens to be studing abroad in transilvania. With the ending of the movie directly effecting the outcome of the 3 sequels of this movie. So this movie you would definately have to see all 4 movies in this series to understand it completely...and to enjoy it completely.

You can purchase the DVD for 1 and 2 in Spanish versions for 20 bucks each. There is an option to turn off the spanish subtitles, so you get the english language version on DVD and don't have to pay a fortune for a sucky (pun intended) VHS copy that some creep is charging $150.00 for.

Now go get your SUBSPECIES! You bloodsuckers!

Summary: Subspecies - Great Series!
Review: I loved this movie the minute I saw it. The location sites and atmosphere are great. The music sets the mood. I felt like I was actually there in Romania. The acting, well ok, not the greatest, and Radu's fingers could have been better. I would recommend this video to all Vampire movie lovers.

Summary: Low budget...great movie!
Review: I won't go into the storyline because that's been sufficiently outlined by other reviewers, but I will say that this is a fun and interesting little vampire flick. I'm actually surprised and disappointed that it's not more available on DVD, and I wonder if the studio has any plans to perhaps turn the Subspecies series into a 4-disc boxed set of some sort? The setting is great, and as long as you suspend disbelief and realize this is a product of the early 90s, it's a great movie to watch with a bowl of popcorn and a good drink.
