Summary: what happened??
Review: I started to watch this and thought wow I am in for a treat, and then it just fell apart. The romance seemed so fast, he was her ideal man in a matter of minutes (he came on the scene too late in the film). The townspeople got over their hate real fast (and during an exorcism??) it was unbelieveable. Something was just missing ... a better screenplay perhaps. The acting was good, though the normally wonderful Aiden Quinn seemed kind of absent from emotion.

Review: This movie is the bomb. If you enjoy witchcraft, you will love this movie. Sandra Bullock rules and Nicole was awesome. They played their parts better than anyone could ever ever do. I have watched this countless times. I love it.

Review: Bullock and Kidman and their acting abilites can not salvage this turkey of a film with a non-existent script and no dirceting at all.

Review: Pretty good. You could identify with the characters - it was so sad when Sally's husband dies and I loved the bit with the circle of witches at the end. It also shows family ties v. well. I did think the aunts were a little annoying, but I don't like that sort of character anyway. The reason I didn't give more stars to this movie is that it unsettled me, and I don't like movies that do that. But all the acting is great, Quinn providing refreshing relief from mad aunts, terrified witches and evil Buglarian zombies.

Summary: Better than most...
Review: Well, this movie wasn't great, but nor was it bad. I would have given it 3 stars, but grading it against other movies of similar theme (e.g. "The Witches of Eastwick",) it actually comes across pretty well.The Pros: This movie is probably the best mainstream portrayal of actual, modern witchcraft that exists. Words like "The Craft" and explanations that witchcraft does not entail a belief in or pact with "Satan" are very good. Other than that, the story is nice, the settings are beautiful, and the acting is well done. Over all, things are pulled off very well here. Oh, and I love the semi-subtle allusion to karma (everything you do will come back to you later on). On the other hand... The Cons: OK, there are some major realism issues here. For example, there is no spell to bring a person back from the dead. And, well, love spells? Come on! Aside from that, the flying at the end has to be pretty bad. Still, I suppose for the purposes of movie-making, one has to make exceptions in order to make things interesting. I can't say I totally agree with that, but I'll deal with it. So over all, I would actually recommend this movie. Sure it has its faults, but over all it is a pretty magical, if not magickal, movie. One of Sandra Bullock's better thinking-movie roles (at least as far as this is a thinking movie, and really that's a whole other issue). Enjoy!

Review: Practical Magic truly is one of the greatest movies ever! Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman give outstanding preformances. One of Sandra's best films! Almost as good as Speed. Overall, Practical Magic is a story of romance, love, tragedy, action, suspense, horror.....it includes everything you could ever want in a movie!! Everything about it is good. Great for all ages! (yes, that means adults too!!)

Summary: enchanting & magical
Review: Based on Alice Hoffman's lovely, evocative novel, Practical Magic makes a smooth transition to film with its spirit intact. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman capture and embody the cursed but radient Owens sisters; and the gloriously witchy aunts (played with relish by Diane Weist and Stockard Channing) slyly steal every scene they're in. The gorgeous visuals and detailed art direction are as stunning as Hoffman's prose, and any witchy woman (or wannabe witch) worth her salt will lust after the aunts' divinely rambling Victorian house, complete with a herb-thriving greenhouse and well appointed country kitchen - nevermind the exquisite Book of Shadows brimming with relics and secrets. Aidan Quinn is understated and appealing as the solid nonjugdmental soulmate who rides into town bearing his own star of protection, drawn by a destined force he can't quite explain. The ending/resolution resorts to a bit of Hollywood magic, but the heart and soul of the book enchantingly shines through.

Summary: And I don't even like Sandra Bullock - MEOW! Nicole Kidman
Review: First of all, I am not a huge Sandra Bullock fan. She bothers me. I do appreciate the many different layers of moral(s) in the film. Blah blah blah true love/fate and You can't practise "the craft" half-way. Or you end up with dead drunk Bulgarian following you around the house, he'll also be REALLY into sisters. Which might work for you, especially if you need some fertilizer for your roses. The film is a pretty close interpretation to "The Craft" minus love spells for money and stabbing dead birds in the eye. Slipping your boyfriend BELLADONNA so you can get some shut eye is a definite sign of a problem! Um, hello? This movie touched me very much because of the relationship between the sisters, all of them, 3 generations. I do not have a sister. And it was so moving to see the dynamics of the relationships. It brought tears to my eyes in some scenes because I have a best friend that I love as much as these sisters all love eachother. Some people have said the movie was boring or slow. I would argue that these people are not able to see the deeper meanings and layers to the film. The set is GORGEOUS and the acting (except for Quinn, he is kinda blah) is superb. This movie also shows "witches" in a much more favorable light than say HOCUS POCUS. or The Craft. It's also nothing like the Witches of Eastwick. Young beautiful women with problems. Love, acceptance, internal struggles etc. One sister that is afraid to fall in love - another sister falls in love with the wrong man. They are both so glamourous. Would you want to be Sally or Gillian? MEOW to Nicole Kidman! The ending is kind of fairytale and expected, but this is a romantic comedy/drama not a horror film. The soundtrack is pretty good, not up my alley but I still enjoyed it. The commentary is dissapointing though. I will watch this movie over and over. It has become one of my favorites which is an unexpected surprise, considering Sandra Bullock is in it. Hi to Gracefalls, I could drink a case of you!

Review: This movie is the best movie I have ever seen involving White Magic. Most people think that Magic is something evil that will kill you & witches are evil hags that murder children.WRONG Magic is a sorce of enchantment & enlightenment. Even though if you are not careful especially black magic you can goof BIGTIME as they showed in the movie.

Summary: The BEST movie involving the Craft I've ever seen
Review: As a Wiccan, I was happily surprised at the treatment of witches in this film. Unlike the power-hungry, psycho teenyboppers of The Craft (a horrendous, disgusting film! ), this movie treated their witches with a light, humorous touch. As a romantic, I couldn't recommend this movie more. Though the special effects were very Hollywood, you have to keep in mind that this movie was made by Hollywood. No, we can't float off roofs; no, we can't raise the dead. Still, all in all, it was a beautiful movie; an affirmation of witchiness! There was little treatment of the religion of Wicca, but then again the women were never stated to be Wiccan. They are witches, yes, but that's not necessarily the same thing. Some of my favorite movie lines are in this movie (the other is "Ghostbusters"): "There is no Devil in the Craft."; "You can't practice magic while looking down your nose at it."; and "There's a little witch in all of us." I love this movie. I will watch it again and again and again. And I find myself singing the songs by Faith Hill and Stevie Nicks (wonderful, magickal Stevie!) at work in the middle of the day. Buy it. Watch it. Love it.
