Rating: Summary: Touchy Feely Disaster! Review: Leave it to Hollywood to take a marvelous book and gut it of everything that made it great. Granted, Alice Hoffman's multi-plotted novel couldn't be brought to the screen with all of it intact, but this is a disaster. Instead of the sophisticated, tender, and truly magical feel of the book, we get basically "Boys on the Side" meets "Bewitched"...only I actually kind of liked "Boys on the Side". Director Griffin Dunne seems hell-bent on keeping everything as cutsie-poo as possible, he even has the characters do stupid little dances to oldies and soft-rock hits! Yes, its that kind of movie. None of the darker tones of Hoffman's novel are here...none of the magic, either. The two leads seem like good choices for the heroines, but their performances are all mannerism. For a much better movie about magic and sisterhood, check out the wonderous "Eve's Bayou." Or, even better, read Hoffman's book. It's a delight. I recently heard Sandra Bullock is going to produce a sitcom version of this. I just hope Hoffman is getting a fortune for having to put up with her book being so trashed.
Rating: Summary: Practically No Plot Review: This movie was indeed interesting and full of enchantment, but it lost me. It had a plot, but not a good one. I believe this movie could have been better than everyone says it is. I also think that Nicole Kidman could've done a better job acting in this movie. Overall, I think this movie was a little interesting, but not enough to make me go "oh wow! I really want to buy this movie!" I think that it really could've been better than it was.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting Review: I thought this movie was great! Its diiferent from most romance movies because it doesnt focus as much on the couple in love. It focus's more on the two sisters trying to work out their problems. My favorite scene is when they have margaritas! It is hilarious to see them all drunk and when the two aunts start to sing! Oh my goodness, funy funy! Anyways this is a chickflick not that some men wouldnt like it but most guys wont.
Rating: Summary: A Review For Men Review: Sandra Bullock looks really good in Practical Magic. Nicole Kidman, as you would expect, looks nice, but not nearly as beautiful as she usually is. Of course Sandra Bullock is the star of this movie and was more popular and powerful when this was made, so the producers couldn't let her be upstaged by a more beautiful woman. Unfortunately, in spite of the good-looking leads, this movie won't really appeal to men as it is geared toward female sensibilities and desires. The weak witchcraft based story line is just a vehicle for its incessant, feminine "I just want to be loved (by a gorgeous hunk)" mantra. To sum it up, Practical Magic is a high estrogen chick flick.
Rating: Summary: Love it! Review: This movie is total eye-candy. I love the characters and the actresses playing them. I've heard that the "witchcraft" aspect of it isn't all true but for the layman it's fine. If you like long hair this is the movie for you.
Rating: Summary: i hate the widescreen version Review: I own tis particular dvd.... while it's very entertaining to watch, what i hate is the widescreen format.. Having eyes which are extremely light sensitive ,this format irritates them to no end...!!! Sandra Bullock is perfect as Sally Owens ( the older sister) who refuses to even admit that she 's a witch ...much less practice magick at all!!! Nicole Kidman is wickedly funny as her younger sister Gillian... The two little girls who play Slly& Gillian as children are supurb! Being a younger sister myself,i really identify with Gilian Owens!!! ( and Antonia) Not only are Stockard Channing & Diane Weist great actresses ,but they play the best parts of their careers in this film!!! This Dvd is highly praised as not only a great film, but as one of the most honestly told stories about heridtery witch craft ever made...
Rating: Summary: Stockard Channing and Sandra Bullock Steal the Film! Review: The initial release of this movie had some Wiccans complaining that it wasn't fully accurate of the religion. We must remember, it's Hollywood and they do take liberties with "facts" for effect and entertainment. On the plus side, this is probably the most Wiccan friendly film available that explains some of the Earth based tenets within the Craft. Sandra Bullock will make you laugh and certainly make you cry. The scenes where we see her frustration penetrates the audience like a beacon. Only the heartless of the world could possibly be unaffected. Additionally, Stockard Channing acted her butt off along with the rest of the cast. The whole film came across as though they had a wonderful time making it. It is a cute romantic comedy with whacky aunts, a wild sister and a boyfriend from hell, LITERALLY. It's worth the purchase and should get a number or repeat viewings when you need a little pick me up.
Rating: Summary: should've been better Review: Not a travesty, but a rather pedestrian filming of a terrific Alice Hoffman novel. There are some good elements: the cast is engaging enough, the cinematography is lovely in a Wiccan-Martha Stewarty way, and it's hard to fault any movie that includes Nick Drake's haunting "Black-eyed Dog" on its soundtrack. But the film dumbs down both the plot and the atmosphere, spelling out the story so one can practically figure out the ending from the opening credits, and replacing the book's mystery and wonder with sub-Spielberg gee-whiz effects. I admit that I enjoyed the film when I first saw it, and still have affection for it, but much of that I would attribute to knowing, via the book, what was really happening that the filmmakers were at a loss to convey. Too bad, I'd much rather get those feelings from the film itself. Perhaps a remake will eventually happen, with someone like Alfonso CuarĂ³n at the helm.
Rating: Summary: White Witches Beat Ultimate Evil-A Slime of a Boyfriend!(lol Review: This is a fun, magical movie about two white witches who's magic bond of sisterhood and their power's help them find love, laughter and peace. Gillian triumphs over an evil slime of a boyfriend who won't stay buried and love blooms anew for Sally after the dark loss of losing her husband. And it's neat to see a movie where this isn't some evil witch horror trap were some old hag with a wart cackles, stirring a cauldron with a hand and holding a poisoned apple in the other. I'm not a Wiccan but I've always loved movies about magic and it was nice to see something different from the much darker The Craft where all the character's abuse their powers or countless other movies where the witch is some evil, baneful thing. I even have a friend who is rather religious who, suprisingly, loved this movie. That's I think because it is so positive and has you smiling by the end of it. It's a great movie to watch, imo.
Rating: Summary: This is excellent Review: This movie is about getting past stereotypes and opening new horizons. Not to mention cherishing those who stick by you and never judge. If the world would be like this movie becomes, we'd all be better off.
