Summary: A Film Less Punchy
Review: There are some nice ideas in this quirky film about a daft toilet cleaner who makes a confused attempt at shooting his employer (Ian Holm) after he loses his job and girlfriend and takes off with his boss's bitchy daughter. Considering he is out smarted by the security guards and his hostage ends up taking control over the situation in a very calculating and calm manner, you can guess that McGregor's character is not at all good at being nasty. But this film tries too hard to match the reputation of Boyle's other, better, films and ends up losing itself in an attempt to be hip in the mainstream. Although McGregor and Diaz give good performances they do not have enough on-screen chemistry together which is needed to make a convincing love story.

And what is with the angels who spend half the time trying to get the main characters together and the rest of the time trying to kill them?

I don't know, it is entertaining enough I suppose but I certainly wouldn't go out and buy the video.

Summary: An absolutely awful film!
Review: of all the bad films I have ever seen this is the worst. The plot is the kind that makes you muddled and dissatisfied. if Cameron Diaz had had a more interesting part I would have said that she played it well, but she had the most boring part ever! By the end of the film I was almost asleep. Although I feel that this would have been a good film if they told you just a little bit about what is going on, I would not reccomend this film to anyone except people who like films that make you feel as if you must have missed a vital line!

Summary: "A life very weird"
Review: This is one of those movies that will confuse and befuddle you. Just when you think you are catching on, it changes style and tempo. It wouldn't be that bad a road movie if they cut out the angelic interference and made it a straight character film. Cameron Diaz does a good job playing the spoiled rich witch, and Ewan McGregor does ok as the down on his luck janitor. To make a long story short he ends up kidnapping her (or is it the other way around?) And of course they fall in love at the end. The plot takes on a weird supernatural angle with two angels that try to help the two along in their rocky road to romance. And gets weirder with a drunken hallucination karioke scene. You won't know whether you're coming or going with this movie. Although, after all this I have to say that there were some funny moments that will make you laugh, you'll just wish they ended up in a better film.

Summary: More Than Ordinary
Review: A Life Less Ordinary is one of the more inventive road movies to come down the pike in the last couple of years. It's post-modern and chic and has a soundtrack full of digable cuts. And while it lacks the slick cleverness of director Danny Boyle's other two films--Shallow Grave and Trainspotting--the dopey charm of the two leads makes up for it. There's a certain freshness about the film which allows for a lot of unexpected and sometimes oddly played scenes. One that works the best takes place in a Karaoke cowboy bar. Robert (Mac) is called up to sing a ditty and before you know it Celine (Diaz) and he are tripping the light fanastic in gaudy, hipster duds. It's a killer touch.

McGregor brings a witty sheepishness to his role, and Diaz is his perfect antithesis--wealthy, streetwise, and brash. The combination makes A Life Less Ordinary solid and entertaining.

Summary: Bizarre, but highly entertaining
Review: The thing to remember when watching _A_Life_Less_ Ordinary_ is that the movie is supposed to be surreal--it's kind of like a dream. The violence, if taken seriously, ruins the whole piece. But when that violence, along with just about everything else about the movie, is viewed as something outside of reality, everything comes together to form some real entertainment. Nothing that happens in this movie could really happen the way it does; and that's the point. I'm convinced that the reason most of the critics trashed this movie is they didn't quite get the surrealism involved here. Notice that even the setting of the movie is removed from anything overly familiar. The action doesn't start in New York City and move to upstate New York. It all takes place in Utah. The audience is not bombarded with familiar products. I have no idea what kind of gas the characters put in their car--we are not shown a looming sign at the gas station with a big name gas company emblazoned on it. When Robert (Ewan McGregor) unpacks groceries there are no soda cans or potato chip bags positioned just right so that the audience can read them. Even when we are given a specifics about place, they are generic. "Al's Bar," for example. All of these things help create this surreal, dream-like feel to the movie.

Don't listen to the critics. In fact, never listen to the critics. Make up your own mind. In my opinion, this is a great movie. But don't listen to me either. Just see it.

Summary: Finally, An Original Romantic Comedy
Review: It's been a long time coming, but romantic comedies finally have the hope of seeming new and original. I had wanted to see this movie for a long time, and when I finally did, I wasn't at all dissapointed. This film was scalded by bad reviews and low box office take. Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz make a great team. McGregor is an extremly talented actor and he makes a great comic actor! One of the best scenes is where he tries making a ransom call, but has to keep starting over because he messes up! This movie has everything: great direction, good actors, a great story, and puts more than a few more than welcome kinks into the romantic comedy formula, which is turned upside down! This film is underrated and if you've heard all the reviews simply see the film for yourself. And even if you don't like it, it's not a bad Friday night video rental. Check it out.

Summary: Favorite Romantic Comedy Ever
Review: I like this movie more than probably anyone else on the planet. Cameron Diaz is really hot and Ewan McGregor is everyone's favorite regular guy. I'm usually bored with movies of the "romantic comedy" genre but this one is a little on edge, has some off-beat humor, and some bizarre happenings that keep it from being all mushy. I don't know how this can possibly not have a cult following. It's good stuff. period.

Summary: A film very ordinary
Review: This film is a disappointment for those who are familiar with previous work from Boyle and McGregor. Its meandering story line is overly long and demands serious editing to tighten up the focus. A sub-plot involving heavenly messengers is merely distracting, and adds nothing to the basic story of an implausible love between a bumbling, misguided janitor and the spoiled heiress he kidnaps in an effort to regain his job mopping floors. Perhaps this lack of believablity stems from the basic lack of balance between the co-stars. Diaz cannot match the intensity of McGregor, who is all over the map with his character's emotions, and at the point where she needs to invest a great deal of authenticity in her character to lend credibility to the exteme fantasy of the ending she fails completely, and the ending becomes just another one of the gimmicks Boyle has sprinkled throughout this film. There is an extraordinary amount of gun-related violence in this film and it is very disturbing to see a gun in someone's hand in almost every scene. In all a very unclear and confused story. Because there is no nudity or adult sexual content and limited offensive language, usually in McGregor's indecipherable accent, this one is more age appropriate McGregor's fan base of 14 year old girls than his usual work. They'll get a big kick out of the cute little animation that follows the credits, perhaps the best part of the film.

Summary: A wonderful wild and crazy journey
Review: My husband and I both enjoyed this movie immensely, although to tell you the truth, it's difficult to really say why. The storyline is at times very bizarre and disjointed, but I believe it is precisely the strangeness of the script that makes this movie such a fun and wacky ride! After having seen it in the movie theater, we were hesitant to watch it on video again; we remembered the ludicrousness of the plot and figured it probably wouldn't stand up to multiple viewings. Much to our surprise, it was a delight even the second time around!

The performances by McGregor and Diaz are top-notch and their chemistry is great, but Hunter and Lindo absolutely steal the movie as the angels!

Summary: It's better to watch this movie with the right attitude
Review: It's not high art. It's not logical. It's quirky, strange, different, and yes, funny. Along the veins of such movies as "The Quick & The Dead" and "Evil Dead." I know, those are totally opposite genres from "A Life Less Ordinary", but they are movies that require a different approach in order to enjoy them.
