Summary: How To Make A Typical Romantc Comedy
Review: Magazine writer Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) needs an idea for her next article. She decides to find a guy, and while dating him, do everthing she can to drive him away in 10 days and write about it. Her boss Lana, (Bebe Neuwirth) thinks this would make a great column, and gives the go ahead. The guy she chooses for her piece is ad man Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey). At the same time that Andie puts her plan into motion, Ben enters into a contest of his own, using Andie, in hopes of landing a big account.

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, is a fairly by the numbers romantic comedy, in my opinion. Director Donald Petrie (Miss Congeniality) does a fair job, considering the sit-com style script, of the film. I guess with so many of these films being made lately, it's almost impossible for folks not to be able to figure out how these things are going to play out. The success or failure of "date movies" really depends on the chemistry of the couple involved. Hudson, like her Mom actress Goldie Hawn, lights up the screen. Her cute personality makes this film watchable. As for McConaughey, he's just kind of there, doing his best to keep himself afloat. I had a hard time with his attempts at all out comedy. For those scenes in particular. McConaughey's comic timing, seems like it's forced. Together, both actors work with each other, as best they can. But I didn't buy them as a couple. Another factor against the movie, is the fact that the best laughs, were in the trailer, therefore every other comedic moment of the film is muted.

The only real bright spot here, as a said is Hudson, and it is because of her that I can give the film as many stars as I did. My final recommendation? See the movie only if you must, or are a fan of Hudson.

Summary: Too much twinkle
Review: Too much twinkle
Kate Hudson is cute, cute, cute - but methinks she twinkles too much in her attempts to be the cute daughter of cute Goldie Hawn.
This is a fluff-nutter of a movie with some good lines and some very funny scenes, but it's not going to have staying power. It's the equivalent of a very light summer beach read. The premise is silly: Hudson, a mag writer in NY, is assigned to date a guy and deliberately do all the things that drive guys nuts and send them scurrying away fast, fast, fast. The hooker: she's picked Matthew McConaughey, an ad exec who has accepted a bet that he can make a women fall in love with him in 10 days.
Of course, you already know how it end; this is light romantic fodder, after all. Sure, watch it with some gal pals - but don't look for it on Oscar night, that's for sure.

Summary: How to Lose an Audience in 10 Minutes
Review: HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS fails on the execution of the very title. This is a very lame attempt on the battle of the sexes theme and it all rests on Kate Hudson's character "Andie". She's a Columbia University journalist working for a women's magazine who wants to write something meaningful instead of writing fluff. In order to get the meaningful assignments that are alluding her, she must first put up with accepting lame writing assigments put upon her by her editor Lana Jong (Bebe Neuwirth). Andie comes up with the idea of dating a guy and having him dump her in 10 days. She gets the idea after a co-worker of hers is dumped by her boyfriend. She meets Ben (Matthew McConaughey) who, in a simple twist of faith, is on a bet with his boss and co-workers at an ad agency, that he can make a woman fall in love with him in a couple of weeks. This is where the film gets rough. Andie/Hudson puts on a psychotic persona to get Ben/McConaughey to break up with her. The first few minutes of Andie/Hudson's alter ego is where it loses the audience because it is very annoying and not plausible. Each attempt of Andie to torture Ben get scarier, unwatchable(yet not very original) and no guy would put up with even the first hint of the instability.
The film becomes predictable as it goes through the motions of a "will they or won't they get together" plot. However, by the end, and through conventional means of a modern hollywood romantic comedy, everything is wrapped up and we know these two will eventually fall in love. The film has great New York City locations, a decent support cast (namely Andie's two main co-workers Kathryn Hahn-Michelle and Annie Parisse-Jeannie), and Matthew McConaughey is always good, however, once Hudson's character puts her plan into action, the film is not fun to watch.

Summary: Love romantic comedies? Ignore the critics--See this movie!
Review: If you read on-line reviews of this movie, you will see comments like "saccharin and cheese" (EW), "you've seen this all before"(E! Online),and '"How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" will soon be known in the trade as "How Not to Write a Romantic Comedy"' (Variety). If you tend to agree with movie critics, then pass this one by.

However, if you seriously into romantic comedy, you are going to love this film! Kate Hudson is absolutely hilarious as the journalist trying to make a name for herself by committing every cliche sin in male/female relationships. And Matthew McConaughey is wonderful as well as the silently suffering male (who has to put up with it all because of a wager he made). Their chemistry is undeniable. Kate Hudson's expressive face made the scenes even more funny. The situation may be somewhat far-fetched, but who can't relate to the girl that is too clingy, invades a guy's space, uses baby names for her boyfriend, etc. For that matter, who can't relate to a guy who thinks he's God's gift to women, rides a motorcycle because "chicks think it's cool," smokes Stogies and plays poker on boy's night out, etc. Of course there is that predictable moment when all secrets are revealed, but what they do with it at that point is completely unpredictable. The conclusion is very touching--just as it should be for romantic comedy lovers.

Bottom line? Very funny. You won't regret seeing it!

Summary: (3.5) A movie with flaws, but it improves toward the end.
Review: I'm not quite sure where to start with this one. I didn't have high expectations, after seeing the trailer, but I thought it was an interesting premise, so finally I rented it. My initial skepticism was promptly validated. Until about 2/3 of the way through the movie I was going to write a rather scathing review and certainly not give it more than a 3.0 rating. The basic plotline is this: Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) writes a "How to" column for a rather flaky looking magazine that usually covers topics like clothes, diets, dating, etc. Her current topic is "How to lose a guy in 10 days," and she's made a bargain with her boss that if she can successfully drive a man away in that amount of time, she'll finally be able to write about issues that really matter - politics, religion, etc.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) works in advertising, and is desperate to be the one appointed to handle a contract with a huge diamond company. While trying to persuade his boss that he's the right man for the job, the topic of selling diamonds is somehow made synonymous with Ben's ability to sell himself to any woman alive. His boss agrees that he can have the job if he can make a woman (picked by two of his co-workers) fall madly in love with him in the next ten days. He agrees. The co-workers pick a woman out of the crowd and, big surprise, it's Andie. The two begin to date, with Andie doing everything she possibly can to drive him mad, and Ben doing everything he can think of to win her heart. Predictably, they end up falling for each other, and much professional and internal conflict ensues.

As I said earlier, the first 2/3 of the film did little to win me over. Most of the characters seemed just too incredibly fake to care about, particularly Andie. The makers of the film took a big gamble, whether they know it or not. The power of romantic comedies comes from having the audience truly wanting the two protagonists to get together in the end. Here, Andie comes across as a cold, calculating snob for much of the first part of the movie, while Ben is a cocky, arrogant playboy. I just didn't feel like rooting for either of them.

It's not until the sequence where Ben takes Andie to Staten Island to meet his family that the two really begin to seem like caring, feeling beings. At that point the characters' emotions were much more genuine, and the story began to pick up. From there on I really liked the film, even though the very end was perhaps a little too contrived ... But the chemistry really does come through in the latter part of the film, and thus I raised my rating to a generous four stars.

The acting is fairly good all around, despite the fact that most of Andie's co-workers are rather stereotypical scatterbrains who live on emotional roller coasters and think the world is made better by a cup of coffee and new clothes. I'm not sure whether their characters were supposed to be genuine or satire, but either way it adds some comic value to the film. I particularly liked the scenes with Ben's family, as the interactions there seemed the most genuine, and the people there the most real (they're a bit odd at times, granted, but don't most families have their quirks?).

DVD features include director commentary, a "Mapping Out the Perfect Movie" sequence with cast and crew interviews that provide extra insight into the film, deleted scenes (most of which I'm glad were not included in the actual film), a "Mapping Out the Perfect Location" featurette, and a music video of the song "Somebody Like You." My parting advice: If you don't like romantic comedies to begin with, don't see this movie. It's [probably] not the one that will win you over to the genre. If you do like romantic comedies (or even if you just have a thing for Matthew McConaughey), it's worth seeing, though it isn't the best. I'd advise renting it first to decide if you really like it or not.

Summary: Fantastic Romantic Comedy
Review: Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) has always wanted to write "hard" news stories. Instead, she's the "How to..." columnist for the trendy women's magazine, COMPOSURE. When her Editor comes up with an article idea, Andie quickly takes the job. Now she's writing a first-hand account on what it takes to drive a guy out of your life in exactly 10 days. While this new assignment for Andie is taking place, ad agency bachelor, Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) accepts an extremely high-stakes bet that he can make any woman fall entirely head-over-heels in love with him in...exactly 10 days. When the two of them end up with each other, it's a laugh-out-loud hilarious thrill ride for all.

There is only one sentence to describe Kate Hudson's performance in this film...utterly fabulous. Everything about her is amazing. Her acting skills shine bigger and better in this movie than in her past films. Matthew McConaughey is hilarious, as he takes everything that Kate's character does in stride, and puts up with all of her freakish antics throughout the entire movie. Fans of romantic comedies such as MISS CONGENIALITY and SWEET HOME ALABAMA will relish in this film about falling in love. FYI: For anyone who absolutely adores this film, check out the book FASHIONISTAS by Lynn Messina, as it has a lot in common with HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS.

Summary: A Sweet Little Gem!
Review: I was prepared for a drawn out, long-road-to-nowhere story.

But I was pleasantly surprised by this funny, sweet little romatic comedy. Kate Hudson just sparkles in this little jewel. There are times, though, when you can see Goldie Hawn in her - a little unnerving.

The plot was predictable but all the sweetness lies in the byplay between Kate and Matthew as they wwork out their competing agendas toward a common end.

Light, frivolous, and fun!
