Summary: Harmless fun
Review: I need to vent. Okay, here goes: it's a real shame that film critics can't sit back and appreciate a movie for what it is. In this case, a harmless little graduation movie.

What I loved about this film was that it features all the typical characters that you would find in high school; the most popular guy, who really isn't all that. The most popular girl, given said status based on looks rather than personality and always judged on her looks. Her group of "friends" [one of whom scarily resembles - in terms of personality - someone I go to school with]. The sensitive guy, the cynical girl, the guy in a desperate bid for the title of "cool" and the nerd, who really isn't so nerdy if you give him a chance.

So yeah, I love the movie. Now it's time for the special features to be reviewed:

• Commentary by directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan and the cast - the "cast" happens to be Seth Green, who for a fair bit of the commentary is speaking in a Brithish accent. I really enjoyed this commentary, and have listened to it a few times. You get a real sense that they enjoyed making this film. You also get a sense of annoyance from realising just how much of their work was cut. Worth listening to [more than once].

• Theatrical trailer(s) - the best part about the trailers is the fact that 90-99% of the footage wasn't in the actual film. Consider it a cut scenes real.

• Music video "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" by Smash Mouth - ah, yes. The soundtrack band [they've been on at least 5 by our last count]. I'm not a fan of Smash Mouth. Let's leave it at that.

• Photo gallery - I've only flicked though them once, and that was more than enough. They weren't really bad just...dull?

A fan of the movie will buy this DVD regardless of the not-so-special features. Like I did. The best part about owning this on DVD is the ability to just put it on when you feel like a quick laugh without the pesky rewind problem.

Summary: Don't wait to buy this one
Review: This is a great movie with a great cast. Lots of popular teen actors make this movie a romp. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Seth Green and others are extremely endearing in this movie about high school seniors ready to make their way in the world. Each character is a representative of the most popular social castes in schools today. This movie should appeal to young people of all walks of life. I highly recommend it to anybody who liked Party of Five and Sabrina, The Teen-Age Witch.

Summary: great, fun movie!
Review: This basically falls into the category of romantic comedy (which I love), but it's also coming of age, being that they're all graduating high school. It's hysterically funny, more than most romantic comedies, and there's more than one romance going on at the same time. I think Lauren Ambrose has more face time here than Jennifer L. Hewitt, although Jennifer is, I'm sure, considered the star. Ethan Embry, who plays the male lead, is like a junior Mathew McConaughey- very cute. I would love to see Ethan E. back on the big screen. Lauren Ambrose too.

Summary: Archetypical Teen Comedy
Review: As teen comedies go, this one re-wrote the textbook. Structurally, it defines the genre. First, it is centered around three couples (standard form since A Midsummer Night's Dream). Next it is explicitly a teen romantic comedy because all the characters are either 100% romantic or 100% realist in their world-views. Invariably, the realists are in love with the romantics, and vice versa. The characters gradually mature to incorporate elements of both world-views, at which point love and a happy ending become possible. Because the entire movie is set within a high school graduation party, the non-romantic tension between characters is based around an opposition between forward-looking and backward-looking characters. Melissa Joan Hart's character establishes this dynamic within the movie world as she tries to get people to sign her yearbook when they enter the party. Really, the form of the movie is more perfectly constructed than all but a few works since Shakespeare and the Greeks. The movie's tone recaptures teen life at its best. Everyone important is beautiful (some of the seemngly endless parade of extras are not). Boyfriends and girlfriends look good together (i.g. are of similar height, skin tone, hair color, speech mannerisms). Emotional highs are very high, and lows very low. And everyone's fundamental struggle is between self and other. Everything down to wardrobe colors makes the tone somehow fit just right. I can't recommend this movie more highly. It's formulaic in many ways, but in the same way that OEdipus Rex is formulaic. Watch it more than once!

Summary: Good Jennifer Love Hewitt Vehicle
Review: Bashed by critics, audience viewers have given this movie cult status, and deservedly so. Good fun performances by everyone but of course the standout is Jennifer Love Hewitt who plays the most popular girl at school Amanda Becket. The story goes something like this. Since it's their last day of school Preston Meyers (Ethan Embry) sees this as his last chance to tell the girl of his dreams (Becket) just how much he loves her. While his best friend Denise Fleming (Lauren Ambrose) has doubts about it. Telling him, what if she doesn't like you? Ever since Amanda's (Hewitt) break up with popular jock Mike Dexter (Peter Facinelli) Becket is the most sought at girl at the party. Now each person has their own agenda at this party. For instance Embry (Preston) wants to tell Hewitt he loves her, and William Lichter (Charlie Korsmo) has his own agenda. William has been humiliated his entire life by Dexter (Facinelli). And feels tonight at the party is his perfect way of getting back at him for all the years of misery Dexter put him through. But that's not the only thing going on at this party. Everyone wants to get "lucky". And no one does more than Kenny Fisher (Seth Green), who in my opinion is the funniest character in the movie! With so much going on you can tell this will turn out to be a funny fast paced teen comedy that I'm sure all teens and even adults will enjoy. Teens might think Seth Green gives the best performance, he certainly is the funniest, and might just want to watch the movie for him. But I think Hewitt is the highlight of the movie. Some might like to take notice to the brief cameos seen in the movie by Melissa Joan Hart, Jerry O' Connell, and a voice over by Liv Tyler. Here's a good clean, and funny teen comedy all will enjoy.

Summary: Hilarious
Review: This movie was great! Seth Green, as usually casted in playing the geek, was hilariously funny. Ethen Embry was as cute as ever. Those of you who like Jennifer Love Hewitt, she was as good as always. The party scene in this movie is the best part of the whole movie. If your looking for a movie to sit down and share with friends and have a good laugh... this is it!

Summary: The Real Sleeper
Review: I think most of the cast of this movie were great, especially Set Green & Charlie Korsmo. But the real sleeper here is Lauren Ambrose, not only because of her true red headed beauty, but because she is so natural at the part it is hard to believe she is acting!! I would like to see more of her in the future.

Summary: Can't hardly wait for this party to end
Review: "Can't Hardly Wait" is your typical teenage fare, everything you expected and a whole lot less. The story tries to fit the high school experience, whatever that might be, into a one-night blowout. But there's too much that needs to be explained in ninety minutes to keep your interest. It's a futile and transparent attempt to recreate the frenzied, post-grad party atmosphere by weaving between crowds and storylines. All the character-jumping leaves "Can't Hardly Wait" without a focus so that by the end, you don't know the characters well enough to care who's having sex with who.

The closest thing to a main character is the lovable dork Preston, played by Ethan Embry, who was last seen as the lovable dork bass player in "That Thing You Do!" Our hero is determined to suck it up after four years and tell the woman of his dreams, Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt), who also happens to be the most popular and beautiful girl in school, that they're meant to be. And what better timing because Amanda just broke up with Mike, the popular, studly football player, who, while we're at it, has been one royal jerk to bonafide geek, William, who is planning major revenge tonight but gets trashed instead and becomes instantly cool. You follow? Still interested?

What this movie really is is a long ninety minute party scene from another teen flick that should be cut down to ten. There are no surprises and not much in the talent department. If you insist on watching a high school movie, check out "10 Things I Hate About You" which at least has some memorable characters, good acting, and a better, and shorter, party sequence.

Summary: Absolute pleasure
Review: This movie is one of the few I'll always remember. Of course, it's generally one big graduation party, and if you can see all the fun in that (destroying the house, getting super-drunk, blah blah), you're not even halfway on what I have seen in this film! The way it shows how fate can in fact exist had quite an effect on me. The "angel's" talk about fate was very moving, and overall, this deeper message the film was trying to pass... well, I don't know, it just got me to understand how beautiful this movie really is! Combine that with lots of teenage-party-drunken action, and you've got a great piece!

Summary: Just gets better and better
Review: I took my little brother to see this when it first came out. I surprised myself by thoroughly enjoying it. It was the perfect teenage ensemble piece. Though it was by no means deep, the movie was hilarious and well constructed.

Mainly the actors are very good. Seth Green was, as usual, great in this role as the scene stealing wannabe. Ethan Embry was excellent as the sensitive and popular loser. Lauren Ambrose was very much refreshing in the sarcastic role of the misfit. Charlie Korsmo pulled off the nerd prefectly. Jennifer Love Hewitt, however, did almost nothing but stare at the other actors with a sort of confused irritated look throughout the movie. Peter Facinelli pulled off the no-brainer jock role without a hitch. And the rest of the actors, tiny parts or not, did very well.

Though the movie itself is great, the DVD's addition of the audio commentary by Harry Elfont, Deborah Kaplan (co-writers and -directors), the producer, and Seth Green was an incredible plus. Though lacking in other features, this more than makes up for it. Listening to all the bits and pieces cut for the PG-13 rating is so much fun and adds a hilarious kind of counter plot in which you try to guess how the deleted scenes would have gone.

In short, this story of a graduation night party and how leaving high school will affect the variety of characters is a perfect companion to a night of fun with your friends. It is easy to watch again and again, picking little details not noticed before or just enjoying yourself as the movie unfolds. Pick this up and enjoy.
