Summary: Waste of Popcorn
Review: I saw this movie at the cinema. Having enjoyed other Hugh Grant flicks, I didn't expect this movie to be the total stinker it turned out to be. I thought Grant and Jeanne Triplehorn were a mis-matched couple. The acting was so-so, the plot very thin, and the humour strained. Overall, this movie wasn't worth the price we paid to see it, and I have no desire to ever watch it again.

Review: I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but was pleasantly surprised by the clever dialogue and interesting plot. Hugh Grant was at his best as a bumbling, likeable auctioneer who falls in love with the daughter of a mob boss, excellently played by James Caan, in one of his best turns on screen in years. A very funny movie, with Grant much looser than his previous characters, especially when he tries to imitate tough guy talk to convince the bad guys he's "jus one of da boyz." Jeannie Tripplehorn plays the love interest and is a knockout in her red dress. If you liked Knotting Hill, you're going to get a bang out of Mickey Blue Eyes.

Review: I watched this movie expecting the usual hackneyed and formulaic romantic comedy -- you know, the kind that are made to simply showcase the leading actor/actress (i.e. Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks).

What makes "Mickey Blue Eyes" different is the story itself. The idea of a English art dealer who unwittingly gets drawn into the New York mob underworld results in some extremely funny moments. The comedy is actually derived from the fact that the supporting actors , especially the gangsters (i.e. James Caan) deliver their lines with total seriousness. The director does not resort to cheap "slap-stick" comedy.

To be honest, I'm not a Hugh Grant fan -- however, in this movie, he delivers a performance that is perfectly suited to the character he plays.

An understated movie and a pleasant surprise.

Summary: Hugh Grant at his awkward, stuttering best...
Review: It was refreshing to see Hugh Grant in a role where the same formula as "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill" were not used: his character falls for a woman, she 'ruthlessly' sleeps with him and leaves him, only to come back in time for a happy ending. Jane Tripplehorn and Hugh make a great onscreen match, and I was laughing (sometimes nervously) the whole time--particularly during the suspensfully funny gangster scenes. Worth seeing more than once!

Review: Mmmmm, yes Hugh plays a bumbling English cliche. And guess what? He falls in love with an American! Wow. Now for the twist - she is the daughter of a gangster - so there's the cue for more cliched stereotypes - ooooo the hilarity of it all. You can imagine the fun that ensues, yes that is right IMAGINE, keep it in you imagination by all means, but do not under any circumstances view first hand - I feel that I have done penence for the world by watching this. PS - Any Americans reading? Please stop asking us poor Brits to say 'forget about it'

Review: The directors and writers have expertly cast Hugh Grant in this amusing unlikely comedy. In his now familiar "fish out of water" role Grant plays an auctioneer in America. His very Englishness has won him the heart of a local schoolteacher who is reluctant for Grant to meet the family. Reason being the family are "the family". Cue many hilarious episodes as Grant gets himself dragged deeper and deeper into the mobs way of life the more he tries to be straight. Despite his girlfriends warning to stay away he does one small favour, then another and so on. Although 4 weddings is now a British classic and Notting Hill was probably funnier, this has the best storyline, including an ingenious ending and some great acting by Grant. Best of all it's a good old fashioned family film that won't offend the kids.

Review: This film combines romance, comedy and the Mafia quite well. Hugh Grant is romantically involved with a beautiful girl whose father (James Caan) is a NYC mob figure. She tries to hide it from him, but eventually he finds out and becomes innocently involved with her father and the mob. Enjoyable flick.
