Summary: The only movie I ever wanted to walk out on
Review: I'm sorry, but Joe Vs. the Volcano was just about the worst movie I have ever seen. I don't blame Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan, I just felt completely disappointed by the BAD SCRIPT! I hate to be a dissenting voice, but I have seen many movies, good and bad, and this one is the only one I actively loathe.

Summary: Joe vs the Volcano
Review: My,my I just watched the movie for the upteenth time. And it never seizes to amaze me. When I tell friends to watch it they answer you're kidding, but when I try to explain all the symbolisms, the word play; ie Joe claiming he lost his sole(soul). That dreadful cattle walk into his job, etc. They answer wow I missed all of that. Bravo, Tom & Meg! Bravo, Mr. Shanley, for capturing the true essence of spirit and the lack of spirit. A genuine message of disenchantment but hopefulness. Ever so often I need to watch this movie, maybe to become soulful once again and to be reminded that it's time to wake up! I wish more people can realize the many levels and true meaning of this movie. It's a must see!

Summary: An all-time classic
Review: For those of you that say you love the movie, I agree with you. The movie is truly magical. No wonder Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan eventually starred in two other movies together. They both really click in this movie which I definitely would consider a cult classic. The story is funny and the music is terrific. As another reviewer had mentioned, RELEASE THIS ON DVD NOW!

Review: Quite simply, my favorite movie of all time. A simple storybook type plot, Joe vs. the Volcano takes me away from the worries and rigors of everyday life and transports me into another place. A must own!

Summary: Float Away on this Cotton Candy Cloud!
Review: The title and plot sound absurd but belie that this is a truly serendipitous and very wise film--a rapturous, life-affirming fairytale! Trapped in a dysfunctional bureaucratic netherworld that evokes Fritz Lang's Metropolis, bullied and tortured by his interminable boss Mr. Waturi (Dan Hedaya), hypochondriac Joe Banks (Tom Hanks)is dying a literal slow and agonizing death when he learns he really IS dying--of a brain cloud! Thus begins his improbable odyssey from Staten Island to Manhattan to Los Angeles to a far-flung island in the South Pacific. What he has previously only experienced vicariously (the felicitous love of Romeo and Juliet, Robinson Carusoe), he now lives first-hand! All the objects and people he encounters along his merry "crooked path" are intertwined. Meg Ryan plays each of the three women (Dee Dee/Angelica/Patricia) he meets during his passage (he has the recurring odd feeling that he's met each of them somewhere before). His first kiss with the soul-sick Patricia amid a raging typhoon is electrifying! The movie's soundtrack is superb--the choices ("16 Tons," Louis Armstrong's "'Ol Man River," and Elvis Presley's soulful "Blue Moon" in particular) are well made. George Delarue's original "Marooned Without You" with lyrics by Director John Patrick Shanely, with its ethereal, angelic vocals, is exquisite. The collective message of virtually all Amazon.com reviewers of this film is explicit: We want a Joe Versus the Volcano soundtrack and DVD!

Summary: For everyone...
Review: For everyone trapped in an awful job working for soulless, inhman empty suits...for everyone who has ever lost a love or who could never get close to one they admired...for everyone who has given up and accepts what they are dealt...I urge you to see this amazing, wholly original work of art. It's funny, sad, colorful, life-enhancing-you can't help but be moved by it. Tom Hanks is wonderful, Meg Ryan is her usual adorable self, and a tip of that hat to Abe Vigoda, of all people, for cracking me up. Folks, don't miss this. However, those are picking this as a "family film" are making a mistake, because most kids wouldn't sit though this. It's a funny world, isn't it? Tripe by former SNL cast members makes millions, but a true comedic classic like Joe Vs. the Volcano is all but forgotten. Go figure.

Review: Wow, how did i miss this one? The imagery and story was just amazing, a modern day fable - Tom hanks and Meg Ryan are great in this film - great chemistry.
