Summary: It ain't Shakespeare
Review: The movie works for me and I am not sure why. The movie in the end is very silly. However, all these parts do work for me: the references to Shakespeare, the use of Enya music, the love story, the gentle poking of fun at L. A. culture, the sly look at pretentiousness, and the strange, silly mystical moments. The movie has some clunkers in the dialog, but some of the pithy quotes work very well. The movie is well written and ties the disparate parts together rather well. At its best, this move is a funny and touching meditation of true love in L. A. At its worse, it has some crude humor. Fortunately, the meditations far outweigh the crudeness. This ain't Shakespeare, but it is better than most of the romantic comedies out there.

Review: the story is about steve martin who just broke up with this really mean bi!@h.hes happy and out in search of a new fling.so this chick valerie skates up.they have a very loose relationship.then theres this other couple whos just broken up,a british hen whose in america to report on la and her obsessive x husband roland.sara is her name.sara and steve hit off fast.when hes ready to make his move,she goes away to the beach with roland.so he and valerie go to make her jealous.chaos ensued!during a verbal battle between sara and steve she asks why didnt you tell me youd just broken up with someone.he asks she knew.she sais whenever an american man just broke up,he goes for someone way too young for him.steve looks over at valerie and says shell be 28 in 4 years!i laughed pretty hard.in case you didnt see the humor and live in a coma steve martins like 60 or something.its one of if not the best romanticcomedy ever.oits pretty well likeable by everybody.sara is cute.valeries got a better body.roland is very annoying.steve martin does very well in this film.steve martin has a lot of crappy movies but when he hits,he hits big.i like little shop of horrors better,but thats it.almost every other one ive seen isnt all that great.

Review: "L.A. Story" is the Mother of all Self-Indulgent Comic-Turned-Actor/Director Films.
Steve Martin once joked that you can't do much with two dollars except throw it into the street, and that's exactly what he should have done with the script for "L.A. Story". After being a fan of Steve Martin's for many years, I saw this piece of drivel in a local theatre and promptly decided I never wanted to see another Steve Martin film again as long as I lived.
"L.A. Story" is full of the sort of self-righteous pomp generated by tired comics turned actor/directors who are long past their prime. In fact, "L.A. Story" seems to take on a life of its own and revel in its awfulness.
It was truly a hateful experience to watch this dog. I walked out of the theatre after about an hour, and demanded my money back.
"L.A. Story" is about as thought-provoking as a three day drinking binge, which is probably what the producer of this film went on after "L.A. Story" rightfully bombed at the box office. Almost no one wanted to waste their time sitting thorugh a bad remake of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Hurray!!
However, I felt that "L.A. Story" does deserve two stars, because anything's better than having to sit through "The English Patient".

Summary: An original comedy with a spiritual twist
Review: This remains one of my favorite movies of all time. It is more than a simple minded comedy, though it is certainly very funny throughout. However, if you watch carefully, you'll see the subtle genius used in the parody of California life (really much of American life) and how the struggle for peace of mind versus simple materialism (and I am a devout capitalist) can be seen in the simple things we do in our lives. He uses humor and exaggeration to illustrate the silliness of some of our behavior and how they interfere with happiness.
Watch it for the simple humor or watch it for the social commentary. Both are well done, pointed, pleasant, and enriching.

Summary: Another Great Comedy by Steve Martin
Review: Directed by Mick Jackson and written by Steve Martin. A romantic satire about working and living in the City of Los Angeles. This film is another clever comedy about love and personal growth. A good story with a great script and good direction keeps the audience laughing until the end.
Steve Martin is the Wacky Weatherman, clownish weather announcer whose predictions are based more on flipping a coin than reading a meteorological chart. Unhappy about his sterile relationship, Steve Martin starts falling in love with an English visitor (Victoria Tenant) who loves to play the tuba. Unsure as to what to do next, our Wacky Weatherman receives advice from a lonely freeway sign. Will L.A.'s Department of Transportation help our lonely announcer to find the love of his life?
This is a light satirical-romantic comedy about love and life in LA. Steve Martin plays his role with the usual comedic gusto and is accompanied by a great cast including Sarah Jessica Parker, Patrick Stewart, and Chevy Chase. A great comedy for everyone.

Summary: One of the Great Comedians -- Steve Martin
Review: Ever since I saw Steve Martin at East Troy, Wisconsin in the late 70's, I have grown to love his brand of comedy. In this movie, not only does he GET SMALL, but he also handles some more serious issues, like man/woman relationships. He is great in embarrassing situations. The viewer gets uncomfortable right along with his character.

Summary: *Scratches head* Why did this do bad at the box office?
Review: Actually I can probably answer my own question: because everyone went to see this movie expecting The Jerk and got Woddy Allen. This is not a bad thing, in fact this is (in my opinion) Steve Martin's finest achievement, a brilliantly written, witty, well-rounded romantic comedy that is definately a "cult-favorite". I hate most romantic comedies, detest them because they use stupid plots designed only to drive the characters together. This movie builds a world of comedy around Steve Martin's character, then gently and subtly introduces the romance in a very artistically delightful bit of filming, with a dreamy Enya soundtrack in the background (back when she was at her best). How can you not laugh when Steve Martin is on the freeway and, to his horror, hears it's the first day of spring and consequently "open season on the LA freeway", to which he immediately takes out his gun and starts firing blindly at the old granny in the car next to his, who fires back. Or all the great cameos like Rick Morrannis, Patrick Stewart, Chevy Chase, and even Terry Jones. If you're a fan of Steve Martin's more subtle wit instead of his goofy antics (read his book Pure Drivel for similar subtle humor), you will love this movie.

Summary: Pure Genius
Review: I have to admit, I'm not too keen on Steve Martin's newest (especially family-fare) movies, but can put L.A.Story up there in my top 5 movies of all time. Martin is a comedic genius and I get very excited to see him on Saturday Night Live, or in a movie such as this where he is truly in his element. I have owned this DVD for a few years and have put many miles on it, but long for artisan to release an updated version. Perhaps it is not on the top of the list for the studio or Martin (especially since it stars his ex-wife), but true L.A.Story fans hear me out and respond if you remember this:Throughout the film there are references to "Harry Zell" (a Hollywood player)- more than I can count on one hand, actually. If you are paying attention, you keep expecting to see a scene with Mr.Zell but alas, it ended up on the cutting floor. I can vividly remember the first time L.A.Story debuted on Showtime in 1993 or so and surprise! the debut was hosted by the talented and hilarious John Lithgow- one Mr.Harry Zell. He introduced the movie and with a tear in his eye, showed his scene at the end of the movie. I'd love the film to be completed with this scene inserted in the appropriate spot- or at least included as a deleted scene. All in all the movie is just about perfect, and people should get the Cliff's Notes to "A Mid-Summer Nights Dream" if they can't understand it.
