Summary: A Fun Cusack-Driven Comedy
Review: Rob Reiner ("This Is Spinal Tap," "The Princess Bride," "Stand By Me") directs another fun, spontaneous movie that is as entertaining as it is unique. Maybe it is another teenage romantic comedy that came out in the mid-eighties, but why does that mean it's predictable or cliche? It's another fun film that John Cusack can add to his list of classics. He delivers another stellar performance with every bit of his distinct flavor -- his off-beat humor, his sincere acting, and of course more female rejection. I recommend this movie to all Cusack fans, 80s teen film buffs, or just for anyone who wants to escape reality for 90 brief minutes.

Summary: A beloved classic...
Review: Finally on DVD. One of the sweetest, quotable and romantic teen comedies of the 1980's. A career-making performance by John Cusack and Rob Reiner really coming into his own as a director. The charm in this one is all in the details, gonzo dialogue and top-flight supporting cast. The drunk cowboy guy, the creepy pedophile's comeuppance, the chunky roommate writing letters to penthouse forum, Larry Hankin's determined go-for-broke truck driver, Anthony Edwards (with hair!) as the slick best friend... Tim Robbins appears in a brilliant cameo as showtune-singin' grad student Gary Cooper ("not the dead one"). See it with somebody you love.

Summary: Never Again!
Review: Never again will I watch a movie with one of the stars of Melrose Place and expect a miracle. The Sure Thing was the most cliched, boring, dull teen movie I've ever seen. It was so predictable I knew what would happen the minute I picked up the box in the video store (I don't know what possessed me to rent it anyways). If you liked Say Anything, The Breakfast Club or even Can't Buy Me Love, you will HATE this movie. It only earned it's two stars for the efforts of John Cusack, who rises above this mediocre film to shine yet again.

Summary: Waiting , Hopefully for the Rererelease of the DVD
Review: Everyone has that select group of comedies from their youth from which they can can quote entire scenes of diolog. The "The Sure Thing" should be included in any ones cannon of classic quotable comedies. Long before we had "One time at band camp..." we had, "I'm usually awkward and shy..." or "...please, a grace period if you will..." If you have seen the film, you have a slight smile of recognition on your your face at this moment. Am I right? This film undoubtedly occupies the pinnacle of the teen comedy genre, a sentiment, that I see, is mirrored in many of the reviews below. I desperately want to add this film to my small but growing DVD collection. With the resent release of Rob Reiner's other early films on DVD, "This is Spinal Tap", "The Princess Bride", "Stand By Me", etc. I thought "The Sure Thing" would follow along shortly. Unfortunately this does not seem to be the case. Rob, if you are out there, your fans are pleading here. Tell the studio stiffs we want our DVD!

Summary: Phenomenal
Review: This is my favorite John Cusack film! It is so clever, and funny. I love the college campus scenes especially. This is a good movie when only a comedy will do.

Summary: I command you to see this movie...(minor spoilers)
Review: Obey me at once, I say! Seriously, it's definitely worth the price of a rental. I rented it and after watching it twice in a row had to immediately add it to my video library.

We've all seen those cross-country buddy movies (MIDNIGHT RUN, PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES), and they range from so-so to way-beyond-very-good. This one falls into the latter category.

Gib and Alison are at odds from the moment they meet (though, being a healthy, red-blooded American boy, Gib would still nail her in heartbeat if given half the chance) but learn through their travels that they have more in common than they originally thought -- and they learn from each other. The ending, as the professor reads Gib's final paper aloud in class is one of the best ways of telling someone how passionately you feel about them without actually saying it that I've ever, ever come across. Truly funny and moving at the same time.

Just a sample of how great the dialogue is (the scene has Gib and Alison pretending to be married with Alison pregnant so they'll be more likely to hitch a ride -- sure enough, a kindly lady stops):

Lady in Car: What are you gonna name it?

Alison: What?

Lady in Car: The baby.

Alison: Well, if it's a girl, Cynthia, and if it's a boy, Elliot.

Lady in Car: Those are lovely names.

Gib: Elliot? You're gonna name the kid Elliot? No, you can't name the kid Elliot. Elliot is a fat kid with glasses who eats paste. You're not gonna name the kid Elliot. You gotta give him a real name. Give him a name! Like Nick.

Alison: Nick?

Gib: Yeah, Nick! Nick's the kinda guy you can trust. Nick's your buddy. Nick's the kinda guy you drink beers with. The kinda guy that doesn't care if you puke in his car. Nick!

I was already a huge Rob Reiner fan, but this movie made me a huge Cusack and Zuniga fan as well. Trust me, you won't regret watching this classic.

Summary: Rediscovery and waiting for the DVD in 2001
Review: I vaguely remembered seeing this film on TV late one evening, years after its release and enjoyed it immensely. Thanks to a friend, I got hold of the VHS edition some years later and rediscovered its strange blend of humor, love story, and morality.

Today I'm hoping for a DVD release. I did recently read it is due for a long overdue DVD edition in the first half of 2001. I look forward to buying it, but please let it be widescreen anamorphic, with a commentary including John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga, the movies' main stars.

Summary: Holds Up Well
Review: I saw this movie in the theater right after it came out and rented it this weekend (after watching "When Harry Met Sally" on DVD) for my wife who had never seen it. Despite some obvious "80 isms" that date it a little (the party scenes are extremely 80's - great music though), the story really holds up well. It is timeless. The plot and outcome is no mystery, you know early on how it will ultimately end up. However, John Cusak and Daphne Zuniga are so appealing that you don't mind taking your time getting there. I was in college when I first saw it. I got a greater appreciation for the movie looking back now with 16 years more of life under the bridge. It is interesting to look at this film in light of John Cusak's later work (he would perfect this type of character in "Say Anything." Also, there are some similarities in this movie found in "When Harry Met Sally," one of Rob Reiner's later works. The dialogue and the situations the actors find themselves in (with the exception of the final scene in English Class which my wife and I both found a little contrived) ring true. This is a great, well written and well acted movie and I (like many other reviewers), think we ought to see a DVD version.
