Summary: The best romantic comedy ever...A classic!
Review: I can't say enough about this movie. My boyfriend & I have seen this movie more than a dozen times and it still cracks us up. You get to see the evolution of a relationship (not many movies show you that) and the interviews in between are very touching. Although it was released more than 10 years ago, the theme still applys today. If Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal ever made another movie together, it would be very hard to top this one.

Summary: A Charming, Insightful Valentine.....
Review: As a rule I generally do not review films...if only because after attempting this before I find I'm totally inadequate! I know nothing of camera angles, dialogue or for that matter what to even look for in any given movie! I suspect I would have flunked out of Film 101! Obviously music reviews are my "forte" but since this film ranks as one of my absolute favorites than it's worthy of another attempt. Wish me luck!

Rob Reiner's "When Harry Met Sally" is for me,after Woody Allen's "Hanna and Her Sisters" and Bogart's "Casablanca" one of the films that I simply need to watch over and over. These three films have, for me,such an absolute "presence" about them that is difficult to explain. As for this film it is simply is the "standard" for which other romantic comedies should be judged! Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal have such real, honest chemistry between them (which is obviously imperative in a film such as this) that when on screen together they literally jump out at you. Plus, the supporting characters, especially Carrie Fisher, playing Sally's best friend,is a joy to watch...but than again, they all are! Including Bruno Kirby,as Harry's best friend. In fact the dialogue between Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby at the Giant's football game ranks as one of the strongest scene's in the film....if not one of the most honest!

Also, kudo's should go to the cinematography which, showing New York, in all four seasons, especially fall, is visually stunning. An absolutely beautiful film to watch! The dialogue is extremely funny, not too clever(thank-you), and above all,at times, insightful in what it has to say about relationships and how we go about this sometimes horrible ritual called dating.I know of no other movie that can make me laugh so hard at one moment and shake my head with wonder as one of the characters state something so honest, real and emotionally true that I almost cry. I may be overstating my case here but if so, than oh so slightly!

In the end, a film that I care for deeply because I care so much for the characters and one that I never tire of watching. Adding to the mix a wonderful soundtrack by Harry Connick and you have the perfect valentine. One of those few films where everything simply feels right.Ummm....now if only my dates would go so well!

Summary: magic.........a yard stick for all other romance films
Review: No words that i can say,can do this film justice, but i will try.
A most refreshing film that delves into the throws of friendship/romance,When Harry met Sally is about 2 people who become entagled into each others lives, wether they like it or not.she hates him,he likes her,she likes him,he sleeps with her, sometimes its hard to catch up! billy crystal is incredibly watchable, and will have you rolling about on the floor laughing,he will also have you nodding your head in agreement,at the things he says.Brilliant movie, brilliant cast, brilliant soundtrack(most of the songs are performed by harry connick junior).a MUST see for anyone who claims they like romance/comedy.

Summary: When Nora Met Woody....
Review: Rob Reiner's "When Harry Met Sally" definitely owes something to Woody Allen, especially to his films like "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan". And if someone disagrees with me, they clearly have never seen a Woody Allen film before in their life. Nora Ephron, who got an Oscar nomination for her script, must have watched Allen's movies before she wrote this. "Annie Hall", to me, is the quintessential romantic comedy of all time. Every romantic comedy made after 1977 (the year "Annie Hall" came out) owes something to it. I don't think all films mean to take a little something from it, but, it's just that "Annie Hall" has left such a big impression on filmmakers and writers that they "borrow" from it unintentionally. Now, this is not to say that "When Harry Met Sally" is a bad movie. I enjoy watching it. It's a good romantic comedy with funny characters, but, it's just that, as I watch this film I can't help but think back to Allen's two films. I mean they even went as far as to use Gershwin's music (Allen's "Manhattan" had a complete Gershwin score to it)! Remember the scene at the end? With Sinatra singing "It Had To Be You". When Crystal comes to realize that he loves Ryan, and he starts to run through the streets of New York to find her at a New Year's Eve party. Well, I like this scene better in "Manhattan" when Allen is running after Mariel Hemingway and in the backgroung we hear Gershwin's "Strike Up The Band". That scene seemed to have more heart to it. "When Harry Met Sally" does have it's funny moments, everyone loves the scene when Ryan fakes an orgasm. And there is wonderful timing between Crystal and Ryan, no question. I also like Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. Harry Connick Jr's music is fine as well. I like the way he sings "It Had To Be You". His music adds a certain sweetness to some scenes. This is what I would call a "cute" movie. It would be fun to watch this movie with a loved one, because as stated by others, both men and women will find this enjoyable. I would recommend that one watches this movie after they've seen "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan". "When Harry Met Sally" is fun to watch, but, it doesn't offer anything we haven't seen done before.

Summary: THE definitive romantic comedy of this era...
Review: When "When Harry Met Sally" came out in 1989, it set a standard for romantic comedies that all others have been trying to copy and/or live up to ever since. Sadly, they've all failed miserably. The on-screen chemistry between Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan harkens back to classic Hollywood. Rob Reiner's direction is superb, and the story is fantastically scripted, with wonderful pacing and development. The whole thing is tied together by one the greatest soundtracks ever. This is one that never gets old.

I was thrilled to see this released on DVD. The deleted scenes alone make this a worthy investment.

Summary: Barely a special edition
Review: It goes without saying that this movie should be a part of your collection. The only question is whether you should bother to spend the extra money on the DVD.

And there's little doubt you should. The film itself is so strong that had it been released without any special features, it would've been worth the money simply for the ability to do chapter searches. But for such a classic that clearly benefited the careers of all involved, there's little in the way of payback for fans. Indeed, it took forever to even get the thing released on DVD. Now that it's here, it has the curious air of exploitation about it.

Instead of a whole meal of DVD extras, we get at best an appetizer. There's a nifty "making of" vignette and a swinging Harry Connick, Jr. video, but that's about where the good stuff ends. Reiner's director's commentary is unusually disappointing. His monotone never reaches anything approaching enthusiasm. Indeed, there are whole sections of the movie that pass by without any reflection at all. It's probably one of the very worst director's commentaries I've ever heard.

MGM had a real opportunity to enhance the reputation of the film and preserve its history by having multiple commentary tracks and extensive background information. Instead, they chose to give us a compromise product. Just enough features to make it a "special edition", but not enough to make it truly special. Good thing the film itself pulls up the slack.

Summary: Romance at it's best
Review: Rob Reiner, coming off of a divorce, was inspired to create, with screenwriter Nora Ephron, a story of love in adulthood. From that idea, and working with Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, comes this delightful and whimsical work. Simply a comedy on the surface, there are hidden themes of love and friendship throughout, as well as the essential question: can romantic love come out of friendship? Well, having experienced a similar situation in real life, I can attest that this movie answers the question perfectly. Not a "love at first sight" movie, we see the 13-year progression of Harry and Sally's relationship, and how it is affected by such things as their attempting to set each other up with their best friends (Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher, in scene stealing performances). The DVD edition of this movie is a beauty to behold. New York has never looked lovelier (particularly the Central Park in fall scenes, which are gorgeous). Fabulous sound, which showcases the lovely score and Harry Conick songs. Includes a Rob Reiner commentary track, which has great anecdotes and stories about the genesis of the film.
